NYT Connections puzzle #1010 is for Tuesday, March 17, 2026. Find progressively stronger hints below, followed by the four categories and their answers. Stop before the spoiler break if you want to solve the board yourself.
How to approach Connections #1010
Connections asks you to sort 16 words into four groups of four. The groups are color-coded by difficulty, and you can make up to four mistakes before the game ends, according to TechRadar’s guide. Look for a relationship that fits every word in a set of four, not just a tempting pair. If a clue below gives away too much, stop at the previous step.
Hints for March 17
Yellow
Think of expressions for being stuck or in trouble. One word in the group is PICKLE.
Green
These are concepts you encounter in music theory. One word is TONE.

Look for everyday objects associated with a string or cord. One word is BALLOON.
Purple
Think of things used figuratively to suggest speed. One word is LIGHTNING.

Each yellow answer is a familiar way to describe being in a difficult situation: someone can be in a pickle, in a jam, in a bind, or in hot water.

The green words have music-theory meanings
Key, pitch, scale, and tone are all terms used in music theory, even though each also has everyday meanings that can make it look like it belongs elsewhere.
The blue answers share a string or cord
A balloon, kite, tea bag, and yo-yo can each be attached to or used with a string. The link is the string, not a shared material or purpose.
The purple words suggest speed figuratively
Arrow, lightning, rocket, and wind evoke quickness by association. This group is figurative rather than a literal category of objects that all work the same way.
Make sure you have the right March 17 puzzle
