There is no single Xbox setting that converts a child account into an adult account. Xbox uses the age and consent status of the associated Microsoft account. If its birth date is wrong, correct it; if the user has reached the applicable age, the adult who granted consent may need to remove that consent and take the account out of the Microsoft family group.
Start by signing in to the Microsoft account linked to the Xbox profile and checking the date of birth at Microsoft account profile information. Then follow the path that matches the account.
What “adult account” means on Xbox
The phrase can refer to several related but distinct things: an account with an adult birth date, an account no longer subject to parental consent, an account outside a Microsoft family group, or an Xbox profile with unrestricted privacy, communication, purchase, and content settings. Changing one does not necessarily change all the others. Microsoft treats age, consent, and Family Safety roles separately; see Family Safety roles and permissions.
Microsoft’s general threshold for treating an account holder as an adult in the birth-date process is 18, with 19 applying in Canada. The statutory age for a child account varies by country and may not match that threshold. Check Microsoft’s country-by-country statutory age table for the account’s region.

If the birth date is wrong
Correct only a genuinely inaccurate birth date. Changing it to bypass age limits can cause consent, verification, recovery, or access problems.
The account is already treated as an adult
- Sign in to the Microsoft account that owns the Xbox profile.
- Open profile information or go to Your info.
- Edit the date of birth and select Save.
- Sign out of Xbox and sign back in. If old restrictions remain, restart the console and review the settings described below.

Microsoft still treats the account as a child
If parental consent has already been given, the adult Microsoft account that originally granted it generally needs to manage the child’s personal information. Sign in with that account at Microsoft’s child-account management page, select Edit this child’s personal info, correct the birth date, and save. A family organizer may not be able to edit it if a different adult or Microsoft account granted consent.

If consent has not yet been completed, Microsoft’s process is to sign in at Microsoft sign-in, choose I’m a parent or guardian, sign in with an adult personal Microsoft account, and agree to the consent form. Then complete the Family Safety flow and use the child-account management page to edit the personal information. Use an account legitimately controlled by the parent, guardian, or person authorized to act; do not use another person’s identity.
If the user has reached the applicable adult age
When the birth date is correct and the account holder has reached the applicable age, resolve consent and family membership separately. Microsoft says the adult who originally granted consent is generally the one who can remove it; being a family organizer alone may not be sufficient. Follow Microsoft’s parental-consent guidance.
- The original consenting adult signs in to Microsoft Family Safety and selects the account.
- Choose Remove consent for this child’s account.
- Return to the family-group page and choose Remove from family group. Microsoft treats consent removal and group removal as separate steps; its instructions are at Leave a family group or remove members.
- Sign out of the affected Xbox account, sign back in, and review the Xbox settings below.
Removing an account from the family group does not delete the Microsoft account.

Remove a family member from an Xbox console
The online Family Safety route is the primary place to resolve consent and account status. If the console offers the control, an organizer can also try:

- Press the Xbox button and open Profile & system > Settings > Account > Family settings > Manage family members.
- Select the account, choose Remove from family, enter the required password or passkey, and confirm.
Microsoft’s Xbox family-group removal instructions note that an organizer is required and that the adult who granted consent may also be needed. Console menus can vary by software and account state; remove consent online first if it is still attached.
If the account holder is still underage
An account holder who is below the statutory age for the account’s country or region cannot independently remove parental consent or legitimately turn the account into an adult account. Keep the child account and have the parent or guardian manage appropriate settings. Depending on the account and service, Family Safety controls can include screen time, web and search filters, app and game filters, purchase approvals, and activity reporting.

If the original consenting adult’s account is inaccessible, recover that account before trying to change the child account. Losing access to it can interfere with consent management and the child account’s access. See Microsoft’s parental-consent guidance.

Adult status does not automatically make every Xbox setting unrestricted. Review the affected account’s controls, including:
- Privacy and online safety: multiplayer, communication with other players, voice and text chat, and user-generated content.
- Content: game and app ratings.
- Family controls: purchase approval, screen-time limits, activity reporting, web and search filtering, and family-group membership.
- Age verification: whether the service is asking for a separate regional verification rather than applying a Family Safety restriction.
An organizer can manage family settings on Xbox through Profile & system > Settings > Account > Family settings > Manage family members. Purchase approvals are covered in Microsoft’s guide to requiring kids to ask before buying from the Microsoft Store on Xbox.

If adult content or features remain blocked
Work through these checks in order rather than changing the birth date again:
- Confirm the Microsoft account has the correct date of birth.
- Confirm parental consent was removed, not just the account’s family-group membership.
- Sign out of the Xbox account, sign back in, and restart the console to refresh the session.
- Review privacy, online-safety, and content settings for the account.
- Check whether the prompt is an age-verification requirement. Microsoft says verification can apply to both Microsoft and Xbox accounts in regions where it is required; methods and availability depend on the country. Australia, Brazil, Singapore, and the United Kingdom are examples of regions with verification processes; this does not mean every U.S. user must verify age.
- If the original consenting adult cannot be identified or accessed, resolve that account-access issue through Microsoft before trying other changes.
Also consider whether a particular game or service has its own age or parental-control requirement. Microsoft’s Family Safety troubleshooting guide covers restrictions that persist after an account’s circumstances change.
Should you create a new adult account?
Usually not if the existing account holds the Xbox identity or content you want to keep. Microsoft personal accounts cannot be merged, and purchases, balances, gamertags, and game progress cannot be transferred to a different personal account. A new account therefore does not convert the old profile or carry its Xbox history across. See Microsoft’s account-combination guidance.

Why the organizer may be unable to make the change
If the birth-date field is locked or the account is missing from the organizer’s controls, the original consent may belong to another adult account. The required consent workflow may also be incomplete, or the account may no longer be classified as a child. Use the adult-consent route rather than trying to change the date from the child account; Microsoft’s birth-date instructions explain the different account states.
