Start by checking your macOS version before deleting anything. Valve ended Steam client support for macOS 10.15 Catalina on February 15, 2025; macOS 11 Big Sur or newer is the safe supported baseline indicated by Valve. If your Mac is compatible, work through the six fixes below in order. The library-preserving reset keeps your steamapps folder so you can usually avoid downloading games again.
First, identify what “Steam won’t open” means
These symptoms point to different problems:
- Nothing happens when you click Steam.
- The Dock icon bounces once and disappears.
- Steam appears to run, but no window is visible.
- The window is black, blank or frozen.
- macOS says Steam is damaged, from an unidentified developer or incompatible.
- Steam opens, but one particular game will not launch.
- Steam opens, but sign-in fails.
The first five are Steam-client startup problems. A game that fails after Steam opens needs the separate game troubleshooting section below; “Verify Integrity of Game Files” cannot repair a client that never starts.
Quick checklist
- Force-quit every Steam process and restart the Mac.
- Check whether the Mac is running a supported macOS release.
- Install macOS updates and download a fresh Steam installer from Valve.
- Reset Steam’s client files while keeping
steamapps. - Temporarily test for VPN, firewall, antivirus and network-filter conflicts.
- Perform a clean reinstall, then send diagnostic details to Steam Support if necessary.
Fix 1: Force-quit Steam and restart your Mac
A hung background process is the safest problem to eliminate first because it does not remove games or settings.

- Select Steam if it appears, then click Force Quit.
- Open Applications → Utilities → Activity Monitor.
- Search for Steam-related processes, such as Steam or Steam Helper. Quit only processes clearly belonging to Steam.
- Restart the Mac from the Apple menu and try Steam again.
If Steam is absent from the Force Quit window, Activity Monitor is the more useful check. Do not delete Steam data at this stage.

Fix 2: Check whether your macOS version is supported
On newer macOS versions, choose Apple menu → System Settings → General → About. On older releases, choose Apple menu → About This Mac. Record both the macOS version and whether the Mac uses an Intel processor or Apple silicon.
Valve says official Steam support for macOS 10.15 Catalina ended on February 15, 2025, because future Steam versions require features and security updates available from macOS 11 Big Sur onward. See Valve’s Catalina support notice. High Sierra (10.13) and Mojave (10.14) lost official support on February 15, 2024, as documented in Valve’s earlier notice.
If your Mac can install a newer macOS, upgrade it before troubleshooting further. If it cannot move beyond Catalina, reinstalling Steam cannot make that operating system supported. Valve does not promise that an old Steam build will continue working, and unofficial patchers or archived installers carry compatibility and security risks.

Fix 3: Update macOS and reinstall the Steam application
Apple’s general sequence for an app that will not open is to quit it, restart the Mac, install updates and redownload the app from its developer. Follow Apple’s app-launch guidance.
- Open Apple menu → System Settings → General → Software Update. On older macOS versions, use Apple menu → System Preferences → Software Update.
- Install available updates and restart when prompted.
- Download the current macOS installer only from Valve’s official Steam website, not a third-party mirror.
- Replace
Steam.appin the Applications folder and launch it.
Replacing the application repairs an incomplete or damaged app bundle, but it does not necessarily remove corrupted support files in your user Library. Do not assume that dragging Steam.app to the Trash is a full reset.
Fix 4: Reset Steam’s client files without deleting installed games
This targeted reset makes Steam regenerate client files and download a fresh client update while retaining downloaded game data.

- Quit Steam completely.
- In Finder, choose Go in the menu bar and hold Option until Library appears.
- Open
~/Library/Application Support/Steam. - Back up the Steam folder, or at minimum copy
steamappsto another drive. - Move the contents of the Steam folder to the Trash, leaving the
steamappsfolder in place. - Reinstall or relaunch Steam and sign in when prompted.
Valve’s Mac removal instructions explain that retaining steamapps preserves downloaded Steam game files and local game data; deleting the entire Steam folder removes all Steam data. Read Valve’s removal and reinstallation instructions.
What to expect after the reset
- Steam may require your username, password and Steam Guard approval.
- The client may need to rediscover, re-index or validate games in the existing library.
- You may need to select the library location in Steam’s storage settings.
steamappscontains installed Steam game data, but save files vary by game. Some saves are local, some use Steam Cloud and some live elsewhere.
Back up important saves before deleting any Steam support folder. Steam Cloud is not a guarantee that every save can be recovered.
Fix 5: Temporarily test for software conflicts
Valve says non-essential Mac applications and network or security utilities can interfere with Steam or game launches. Its guidance specifically mentions Little Snitch, Peer Guardian, Norton/Symantec Internet Security and the built-in Mac firewall; see Valve’s Mac troubleshooting guidance.

- Quit non-essential VPNs, network filters, antivirus tools, firewalls, screen overlays and system-cleaning utilities.
- Restart the Mac.
- Try opening Steam.
- If it works, re-enable those applications one at a time until the conflict is identified.
- Use the conflicting product’s allow-list for Steam rather than leaving protection disabled.
This is a diagnostic test, not a recommendation to run without security software. Do not delete firewall rules or bypass macOS security controls without understanding the consequences.

Use a clean reinstall only after the compatibility check, update, library-preserving reset and conflict test. It removes more local data and therefore has the highest risk.

Library-preserving reinstall
Delete Steam.app, download a fresh installer from Valve, and keep the backed-up steamapps folder. Reinstall Steam, sign in and allow it to rediscover the library. This can still require validation or a small client download, but it avoids redownloading the installed games in many cases.

Full removal as a last resort
Back up installed games and important saves first. Then remove the Steam application and the entire ~/Library/Application Support/Steam folder, reinstall from Valve and start with an empty client. This deletes local Steam data, including download state and client settings; it is not appropriate if you have not secured your saves and library.
If Steam still will not open
Collect this information before contacting Steam Support:
- macOS version and Mac model.
- Intel or Apple silicon status.
- Whether Steam does nothing, bounces and disappears, crashes, shows no window or displays an error.
- Whether the issue began after a macOS update or long period without opening Steam.
- Relevant crash-report text from macOS.
- Which fixes you attempted, including whether
steamappswas preserved.
If macOS repeatedly reports that Steam is damaged, confirm compatibility first, remove the application and download it again directly from Valve. Avoid arbitrary Terminal commands that bypass Gatekeeper.

That is a different problem from a client that never launches. For an individual game:
- Check the game’s store page for macOS support and its minimum macOS and hardware requirements.
- In Steam, use the game’s Properties → Installed Files → Verify Integrity of Game Files command.
- Temporarily disable conflicting background utilities using the test above.
- Update macOS if an update is available.
Valve recommends these steps for games that fail after “Preparing to Launch”; see its troubleshooting article and the guidance for “This game is currently unavailable” at Steam Support. A game can be unsupported even when the Steam client itself works.
