Steam appeared to be online overall at the latest documented check on August 18, 2026. SteamStat.us reported normal status for the Store, Community, Web API, Connection Managers and several game-specific services, while the Steam Store loaded in a browser. That is a time-stamped snapshot—not a guarantee that every account, region, ISP, client or game is working now. Use the checks below to separate a Steam-wide incident from a regional, local or game-specific failure.

SteamStat.us is an unofficial SteamDB project, not a Valve-operated incident page. Status can change after the timestamp, and a normal monitor does not rule out an account-specific or ISP-specific failure.
How to check whether Steam is down now
- Check SteamStat.us first. Open steamstat.us and look at the Store, Community, Web API, Connection Managers and regional indicators. Treat it as a useful independent monitor, not an official Valve declaration.
- Open the Store in a browser. Visit https://store.steampowered.com/. If the browser works while the desktop client says Offline, suspect the client session, cached data, firewall, VPN, proxy or local network before assuming a global outage.
- Check crowd reports. Compare Downdetector’s Steam page and, where relevant, its UK page. A sudden, geographically broad spike is useful context, but reports can lag, overcount, undercount or describe only one country.
- Compare devices and networks. Test the desktop client, a browser, another device and—if available—a phone hotspot. A failure that follows one Wi-Fi network or one PC is unlikely to be a worldwide Steam outage.
- Use official support for account-specific help. Steam’s sign-in guidance at Steam Support distinguishes maintenance, local network, ISP, firewall and interfering-program causes.
Steam outage, partial outage or local failure?

These are probabilities, not definitive diagnoses. Steam can have a partial outage in which one subsystem fails while the rest remains usable.
What “Steam is offline” actually means
The desktop client’s Offline Mode is not proof of a global outage. Steam may have lost an existing session, failed to reach a Connection Manager, or been blocked by a firewall, antivirus product, VPN, proxy, router or ISP. A temporary maintenance event or stale local client data can produce the same message.

Steam’s Offline Mode documentation says supported games can run without an active Steam Network connection, while features requiring network access remain unavailable. Offline Mode generally has to be prepared while Steam is online. If Steam is already asking you to sign in and Offline Mode was not prepared, Steam’s documentation provides no offline bypass for that login requirement.
What to do when Steam is not working
1. Decide whether to wait
Wait instead of making destructive changes when SteamStat.us shows several major services degraded, Store and login fail across multiple devices or networks, or crowd reports show a broad spike. Reinstalling Steam, changing account settings or repeatedly editing DNS and firewall rules will not repair a server-side outage.
2. Restart the client completely
- Choose Steam > Exit Steam.
- Confirm Steam is no longer running.
- Reopen it and try signing in again.
This is a low-risk way to clear a stale session or temporary client state.

3. Test another connection
Try a phone hotspot or another trusted network. If Steam works there, investigate the home router, ISP, DNS, firewall, VPN or proxy. A VPN changing the result only shows that the network route changed; it does not prove Steam itself is down, and a VPN is not a standard fix for a confirmed outage.
4. Check network and security conflicts
- VPN or proxy
- Third-party firewall
- Antivirus web or network protection
- Custom DNS filtering
- Router-level content filtering
- Corporate, school or public Wi-Fi restrictions
Steam’s network troubleshooting guidance at Steam Support identifies firewalls, antivirus software, routers and internet connections as possible causes. If you briefly disable a security feature for testing, avoid unsafe sites, re-enable it immediately and prefer a legitimate Steam exception over leaving protection disabled.
5. Change the download region for download-only failures
- Open Steam > Settings.
- Select Downloads.
- Under Download Region, choose the closest region.
- If it is already selected, test the next-closest region.
- Retry the download.
Steam recommends this for a temporary content-server problem in your region: official instructions. It will not fix a global outage and a farther or congested region may be slower.

6. Verify files when one game fails
When Steam itself works but one title will not launch, use that game’s Steam option to Verify Integrity of Game Files. Check whether it uses a separate launcher and whether the failure is launch-related or limited to matchmaking. Steam’s troubleshooting page covers verification and selected installation-file repairs at Steam Support.

- While online, select Remember me at login.
- Finish downloading and updating the games you want.
- Launch each game once online to complete any required first launch.
- Allow Steam to save credentials on that computer.
- Choose Steam > Go Offline.
Always-online games, multiplayer, external launchers, cloud-dependent features, pending updates and games that require an online first launch may still fail. Offline Mode is an option for supported games, not a universal outage workaround.
8. Rebuild Steam files only as a later step
For certain errors, Steam Support instructs users to exit Steam and delete files in the Steam installation directory while retaining steam.exe and the steamapps folder, then restart Steam. Do this only when local corruption is independently suspected:

- Close Steam fully first.
- Do not delete the entire Steam folder.
- Back up custom mods and configuration files.
- Expect custom files or modifications to be removed by the cleanup.

Prepared Offline Mode may let supported single-player games run. Multiplayer, always-online titles, external launchers and features that require Steam Network access generally will not. An installed game can also fail offline if it has a pending update or has not completed its required online launch.

Regional, maintenance and account-specific cases
Regional degradation
A nearby Connection Manager or content region can fail while other regions remain healthy. SteamStat.us exposes regional connection-manager information, so distinguish a failed route to one region from a global Steam outage.
Maintenance
Steam can have scheduled or routine maintenance, including short interruptions, but do not rely on a fixed weekly timetable without a current Valve notice. Verify the live indicators instead.
One-account failures
If only one account cannot sign in, consider incorrect credentials, Steam Guard, an account lock or security review, a client session problem, or a local browser/network issue. Enter credentials only on official Steam pages and use Steam Support for account assistance.

When will Steam be back?
No reliable restoration time can be inferred from a single status snapshot, and Valve may not publish a public incident timeline for every interruption. Continue checking SteamStat.us, the Store, crowd-report trends and official Steam Support information. Do not download unofficial Steam clients, install registry “repair” utilities, permanently disable security software, delete the entire Steam installation or treat a VPN as proof of a server fix.
