If your PS4 keeps dropping its connection, first find out whether it is losing Wi‑Fi, internet access, PlayStation Network (PSN), or only one game’s servers. Check PSN status and other devices, then run Settings > Network > Test Internet Connection. If possible, compare Wi‑Fi with a direct Ethernet connection: wired stability points to a wireless problem; failures on both connections call for checking the router, ISP, software, or console.
Identify what is disconnecting
The fix depends on which part of the connection fails. A PS4 can remain connected to the router while internet access, PSN sign-in, or a particular game fails.
- Wi‑Fi drops: The network disappears, the PS4 reports that it cannot connect, or the wireless connection itself is lost. Look first at signal, interference, router settings, and the console’s saved network profile.
- Wi‑Fi stays connected but internet fails: The PS4 can see the router, but a connection test or online service cannot reach the internet. Consider the router’s internet connection, DHCP, DNS, or the ISP.
- Internet works but PSN sign-in fails: Check PlayStation service status and sign-in or network filtering issues; changing Wi‑Fi bands will not fix a PSN outage.
- Only one game disconnects: If other online features work, investigate that game’s server status or support rather than treating it as a general Wi‑Fi failure.
- The connection is slow or laggy but does not drop: This can be latency, congestion, or packet loss rather than a disconnection. A headline download speed alone does not measure stability.
Run Settings > Network > Test Internet Connection and note which stage fails. The PS4 guide describes this test and its NAT-type result at PlayStation’s PS4 User’s Guide.
Start with service status and a clean restart
Check the PlayStation connectivity hub for the PSN status link before changing settings. PlayStation recommends checking service status when connection setup fails. If PSN is degraded, wait and test again later; a console setting cannot restore an unavailable service.

At the same time, ask whether phones, computers, or streaming devices lose internet at the same moment. If several devices fail, suspect the modem, router, or ISP. If the problem happens only in the evening, during heavy household use, or after waking the PS4 from Rest Mode, note that timing: it can point toward congestion, router scheduling, or a sleep/wake issue.
- Close the game and turn the PS4 completely off, not into Rest Mode.
- Unplug the modem and router from power. Wait about 60 seconds.
- Reconnect the modem first and wait for its connection lights to stabilize.
- Reconnect the router and wait for Wi‑Fi to return.
- Turn on the PS4 and run Settings > Network > Test Internet Connection.
This can clear a temporary fault, but repeatedly power-cycling equipment without identifying why it recurs is not a lasting fix.
Reconnect the PS4 to Wi‑Fi
A stale saved password or network profile can cause connection trouble. PlayStation’s documented setup path is Settings > Network > Set Up Internet Connection > Use Wi‑Fi > Easy. Choose the network, enter its current password, and test the connection. If setup fails, confirm the SSID, password, and router security settings. See PlayStation’s internet-connection instructions.
To replace an existing saved connection, open Settings > Network > Set Up Internet Connection > Use Wi‑Fi, highlight the network, and press the Options button. Delete or forget the saved network if that option is shown, then reconnect and enter the password again. The wording can vary with system software and region.

Improve the wireless connection
Test the PS4 close to the router. If it is stable nearby but disconnects in its usual location, signal strength, interference, or roaming is more likely than a PSN fault.
- Move the router and PS4 closer together, and reduce the number of walls, floors, cabinets, and metal objects between them.
- Place the router in an elevated, open location. Avoid crowding it against a television, microwave, cordless-phone base, or dense bundle of cables.
- Temporarily pause unnecessary high-bandwidth activity on other devices to see whether congestion is involved.
- If the PS4 is on a guest network, check that the network permits devices to reach the internet and is not isolated from services it needs.
- If the setup uses mesh Wi‑Fi or an extender, test near the main router. A weak mesh backhaul or roaming between nodes can interrupt a connection; an extender can increase signal bars without removing interference or latency.
Compare 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz
In general, 2.4 GHz reaches farther and penetrates walls better, but is more exposed to congestion and interference. 5 GHz can perform better at short range, but its signal weakens more quickly through walls and floors. PS4 wireless capabilities vary by model, so do not assume every console supports every band or router feature.
If the router combines bands under one network name, you may need to separate the SSIDs temporarily in its settings to test them. Connect to 2.4 GHz for several gaming sessions, then repeat on 5 GHz. Compare dropouts, not just a speed-test number. Keep the band that is stable in the PS4’s actual location.

Use Ethernet as a control test
Connect an Ethernet cable from the PS4 to a LAN port on the router, then select Settings > Network > Set Up Internet Connection > Use a LAN Cable > Easy. PlayStation documents both wired and wireless setup in its connection guide.

If running a cable permanently is impractical, a mesh access point, powerline adapter, or MoCA adapter may provide another route. Their performance depends on placement, wireless backhaul, electrical wiring, or coax quality; none is guaranteed to match a direct cable. Route a cable safely if you use one.
Try a phone hotspot to isolate the home network
A short hotspot test can show whether the PS4 holds a connection through a different network. Keep it diagnostic: cellular service may have higher latency, carrier restrictions, restrictive NAT, or data limits, so it is not automatically a good substitute for broadband.

Update the PS4 and router
PlayStation says PS4 system software must be up to date for online features. Check Settings > System Software Update or the update option shown on the console. The PlayStation connectivity hub links to update and troubleshooting support. Do not interrupt an update. If the PS4 cannot update online, use Sony’s official instructions for the correct offline update file and USB procedure rather than an unofficial download or guessed folder setup.
Check the router manufacturer’s official app or administration page for firmware updates. Menus and procedures vary by model and ISP; do not interrupt the update or apply instructions for a different router.

Use custom DNS only for a relevant symptom
DNS looks up service names and returns their network addresses. A different DNS resolver may help with name-lookup or some sign-in problems, but it cannot repair a weak signal, packet loss, router overload, or damaged hardware.
- Open Settings > Network > Set Up Internet Connection and choose Use Wi‑Fi or Use a LAN Cable.
- Select Custom, then keep the normal IP-address and DHCP choices unless your network administrator has told you otherwise.
- At DNS Settings, choose Manual. Google’s published Public DNS IPv4 addresses are 8.8.8.8 (primary) and 8.8.4.4 (secondary); details are at Google Public DNS setup.
- Leave MTU and Proxy at their normal settings initially, then run Test Internet Connection.
If the result gets worse, return DNS to Automatic. Google notes that network distance affects resolver performance, so its DNS is not necessarily faster or more reliable for every connection; see Google’s DNS troubleshooting guidance.
Check advanced router and network settings carefully
Use this section when basic tests point to the router or a configuration change preceded the problem. Change one setting at a time, record its original value, and restore it if the test makes things worse.

Ask the router administrator or ISP to review DHCP leases before setting a manual IP address.
- Security mode: A security setting may be incompatible with an older client. Use the router maker’s documented compatibility settings; do not leave Wi‑Fi security disabled.
- Band steering or channel selection: A router may move clients between radios or change channels. If the issue began after a router or mesh upgrade, test separate band names or the manufacturer’s documented compatibility options.
- Access controls and schedules: Check parental controls, device access lists, scheduled Wi‑Fi downtime, and guest-network isolation.
- Double NAT: An ISP gateway plus a second router can complicate online play. Ask the ISP or router maker to explain the topology before changing modes.
- Proxy: A proxy is usually unnecessary on a typical home connection. Do not enter proxy details unless your network administrator requires them.
NAT type is not a Wi‑Fi diagnosis
The PS4 connection test reports NAT type. The PS4 guide describes NAT Type 2 as internet access through a router; see the PS4 NAT-type guide copy. NAT restrictions are more likely to affect matchmaking, voice chat, joining parties, or hosting than the console’s ability to associate with Wi‑Fi. A NAT result by itself does not prove the cause of repeated Wi‑Fi drops.

Avoid using DMZ or broad port forwarding as an early fix. Those changes affect network exposure and may not address the actual fault. Only consider port forwarding using current official PlayStation guidance and instructions for the exact router.
Leave MTU alone unless there is evidence to change it
PlayStation exposes MTU in custom setup but cautions that unfamiliar advanced settings should be handled with help from an ISP or network administrator. Keep MTU on Automatic unless a specific fragmentation or packet-size problem has been identified. There is no universal custom number that fixes every ISP or router; an arbitrary change can cause new connection problems.
When to contact the ISP or seek repair
Contact the ISP when multiple devices lose internet together, the modem repeatedly loses its service connection, or the problem persists over Ethernet as well as Wi‑Fi. Ask about a line test, modem or gateway logs, equipment stability, and whether the connection uses double NAT.

A PS4 fault becomes more plausible if it cannot reliably detect nearby networks, fails across unrelated Wi‑Fi networks, or continues to fail over Ethernet after software and network checks. Physical movement affecting the connection, or broader crashes, overheating, or storage errors, are additional reasons to stop changing router settings and seek service.
