To run a Windows game as administrator once, right-click its shortcut or executable and choose Run as administrator, then approve the User Account Control (UAC) prompt. To request elevation every time, open the game’s actual .exe file’s Properties > Compatibility tab, check Run this program as an administrator, and select Apply.
Administrator mode is a targeted troubleshooting step, not a general performance boost or a requirement for every game. Test it once before making a permanent change.
What “administrator mode” means
Windows normally runs applications with standard-user permissions. Running a game as administrator means starting that particular process with an elevated administrator token, after UAC approval or entry of administrator credentials. It does not permanently turn your Windows account into an administrator.

A standard user generally needs the username and password for an administrator account to approve elevation. Run as different user is a separate option: it starts a program using another account’s credentials, which may mean the game cannot access the currently signed-in user’s launcher session, saves, or settings. Microsoft explains UAC and administrator tokens; its guidance for game developers describes consent prompts and standard-user accounts.

Run a game as administrator once
From the Start menu
- Press the Windows key and type the game’s name.
- Right-click the result and select Run as administrator.
- Approve the UAC prompt, or provide administrator credentials if Windows requests them.
This may start a launcher or app handler rather than the game process itself. If the behavior does not change, try the executable method. Microsoft documents the basic Run as administrator context-menu action for applications and shortcuts: PowerToys Administrator documentation and Windows Server documentation.
From File Explorer
- Open File Explorer and navigate to the game’s installation folder.
- Right-click the game’s main
.exefile. - Select Run as administrator and approve the prompt.
If you only have a desktop shortcut, right-click it and choose Open file location when available. Check that the file you launch is the game itself, not a crash reporter, updater, or store launcher.
Find the game’s actual executable
A launcher shortcut often points to a launcher or a shell handler, not directly to the game binary. The Compatibility setting applies to the selected executable; it does not automatically elevate every launcher, helper process, updater, or child process involved in starting a game.

- For a shortcut, open Properties > Shortcut and inspect Target. Treat that path as a clue, not proof: a launcher may start a different executable afterward.
- Start the game normally, then open Task Manager and look for the game process. Its process details can help identify the running program, though the launcher may create or replace processes during startup.
- If you use a mod manager, check which game path it is configured to launch.
Usually, test elevation on the game executable first rather than elevating Steam, Epic Games, Xbox, EA, Ubisoft Connect, Rockstar Games Launcher, or another launcher automatically. Elevating a launcher can also give its updater and other launched programs elevated access. Some games may require the launcher and game to run at the same privilege level to communicate correctly, but the launch chain differs by publisher; there is no one setting that works for every storefront.

Make the game request administrator access every time
- Locate the game’s actual
.exefile. - Right-click it and select Properties.
- Open the Compatibility tab.
- Under Settings, select Run this program as an administrator.
- Select Apply, then OK.
- Launch the game normally and approve the UAC prompt when it appears.
If you do not see the option or the change has no effect, open the executable’s properties directly rather than the shortcut’s. If available, select Change settings for all users and check the option there. Confirm that the launcher starts the same executable you edited and that an update has not replaced it. Microsoft community answers describe the Compatibility-tab control and launcher-specific cases: permissions for games and an EA launch issue. Labels and availability can vary by Windows build and application type.
The Compatibility tab also includes controls for older Windows versions. Those compatibility modes are separate from Run this program as an administrator; change only the setting relevant to the problem.
Use a command line only when you need to run under another account
The Windows runas command launches a program using another account’s credentials. In Command Prompt, for example:
runas /user:Administrator "C:GamesExampleGame.exe"Replace Administrator with the appropriate account name and the path with the game’s executable. Windows prompts for that account’s password. The account must be permitted to run the program, and some applications do not work properly under another user profile. Because runas changes the account context, it is not always equivalent to choosing Run as administrator for the current user; launcher sessions, overlays, cloud saves, and credentials may not carry over. Windows 11 Sudo is an advanced option
On Windows 11 version 24H2 and later, Sudo for Windows can be enabled in Settings > System > Advanced and used from an elevated-command workflow, for example:
sudo .Game.exeSudo is intended primarily for command-line use. It is not a replacement for the executable’s Compatibility setting and may not preserve the launch behavior, working directory, launcher session, or overlay setup expected by a game. Its security behavior depends on its configuration; consult Microsoft’s Windows Sudo documentation before enabling it.
Check whether the game process is elevated
A UAC prompt indicates that Windows is requesting approval for an elevation, but it does not by itself prove that the final game process is elevated. A launcher may be elevated while it starts a separate game process with different privileges.

- For a more detailed check, use Process Explorer or another trusted diagnostic tool to inspect the process integrity level.
- For troubleshooting, note whether the specific access-denied, save, or launch error changes. That is more useful than assuming the prompt alone fixed the cause.
When elevation may help—and when it will not
Cases where a test may be useful
- An older game tries to save configuration, logs, shader data, or other writable files inside a protected installation folder such as
C:Program Files. - A legacy game or companion tool reports a specific failure accessing protected system-wide files or registry locations.
- A mod, overlay, or injector documents that it must run at the same elevation level as the game.
- A launcher and game cannot communicate because one is elevated and the other is not.
- An installer, patcher, or anti-cheat component reports a specific permissions problem, and the game publisher’s instructions recommend elevation.
- The game was installed under another Windows account and lacks access to required files.
Microsoft advises game developers to avoid requiring administrator privileges where possible and design games to work as standard users: User Account Control for game developers. A game’s presence in Program Files alone does not establish that it needs elevation; modern software should generally keep user data in user-profile locations instead of writing it to a protected install folder.

Problems elevation usually does not solve
Administrator mode is a permissions test, not a general repair. It generally does not improve frame rate, graphics quality, or stuttering. A crash or save failure may instead come from broken game files, an outdated game, an incompatible mod, a missing runtime or driver, antivirus or Controlled Folder Access, incorrect ownership or NTFS permissions, cloud-save conflicts, a corrupted configuration or save, a blocked launcher, or an inaccessible drive. Microsoft’s security guidance on administrator privileges explains why granting broader access should not be the default.
Turn administrator mode off
- Find the same game executable whose setting you changed.
- Right-click it and select Properties, then open Compatibility.
- Clear Run this program as an administrator.
- Select Apply, then OK.
If the checkbox is not visible, check the executable rather than the shortcut, then look under Change settings for all users if available. If the game still requests elevation, the launcher may start another executable, or a policy or compatibility configuration may be applying the setting. If a launch problem began after enabling elevation, restore the previous privilege level before diagnosing the original issue.

No UAC prompt appears
The program may already be elevated, the selected file may not be the real game executable, the launcher may start a different process, or a policy may block or suppress elevation. Some packaged or restricted apps do not expose the same executable controls as ordinary desktop software. Check the game process and the launch path rather than repeatedly changing unrelated Compatibility settings.

Checking the Compatibility box does not grant administrator rights to a standard account. Windows normally requires valid administrator credentials. On a school, work, managed, or family PC, Group Policy, application-control rules, parental controls, managed security software, or other restrictions may block elevation. Ask the device administrator or follow the game publisher’s supported instructions; do not bypass organizational controls.

The game still cannot save
Check the game’s intended save location and whether the folder is writable. Antivirus or ransomware protection may block writes; cloud synchronization, account mismatches, a read-only folder, a corrupted save, or an inaccessible drive may also be responsible. Permanent elevation can hide a permissions or software-design problem without correcting it.
The launcher says the game is already running
A launcher and game started under different users or privilege levels may not communicate properly. A leftover process or an anti-cheat or DRM restriction can cause a similar symptom.
- Exit the game and launcher.
- Open Task Manager and end only clearly identified leftover processes for that game or launcher.
- Restore the launcher and game to the same privilege level, then relaunch normally.
- If the issue began after enabling the Compatibility setting, remove it and test again.
Mods, overlays, or capture tools stop working
Windows can restrict interaction between processes running at different integrity levels. First test the game normally with mods and overlays disabled, then test the tools separately. If a specific tool genuinely requires elevation, run only the minimum necessary components at the same level and follow that tool’s official instructions; do not elevate every utility by default.

Anti-cheat or multiplayer refuses to start
Do not assume administrator mode is permitted or helpful. Anti-cheat systems can reject altered launch chains, injected tools, or unexpected privilege configurations. Use the game’s official support and anti-cheat guidance rather than trying to bypass its controls.
A Microsoft Store or Xbox app game has no accessible executable
Some packaged Windows games do not expose a conventional .exe that can be freely edited. The desktop-app Compatibility procedure may not apply to them. Use the publisher’s or Xbox app’s supported repair and launch options instead of attempting to change protected package files.
Keep elevation narrow and intentional
Windows’ UAC is designed to ask before an application receives an administrator token. Microsoft warns that disabling UAC reduces protection and is not a general compatibility fix: see its UAC settings and configuration guidance and game-developer guidance. An elevated game, mod, overlay, or launcher has more potential to alter the system if it is compromised.
