To hide one game from friends, open its page in your Steam Library and choose Manage → Mark as Private. Do not choose Hide Game: that option mainly removes a title from your own library view and is not Steam’s game-privacy control.
Hide one Steam game from friends
Steam’s desktop client lets you privatize an individual title while leaving the rest of your library visible. The game remains installed and playable for you.
- Open Steam and select Library.
- Open the game’s library page.
- Select the gear icon (or Settings).
- Choose Manage.
- Select Mark as Private, then confirm if Steam asks.
Valve documents this control in its Steam announcement and current privacy FAQ. Menu wording can vary slightly by language, client version, or layout. If the option is missing, reconnect Steam so the client is online, then restart or update it.
Browser route
On the Steam website, open your Community profile, select Games, find the title, open its management or privacy control, and choose Mark as Private. The exact button placement can change with Steam’s web design.

What a private game hides
Steam presents a private title to other Steam users broadly as if you do not own it. According to Steam’s FAQ, the setting hides these ordinary Steam surfaces:
- Ownership in your profile’s games list
- The title in your recently played games
- Playtime for that game
- Your ordinary Steam “In Game” status and the title being played
- Achievement-unlock and “Played for the first time” events in friends’ activity feeds
- The game in relevant profile showcases, including achievement-related showcases
- Your account in the Store page’s Friends who own this game section
These effects apply to Steam’s normal profile, social, and activity features; they are not a promise of universal anonymity outside Steam.
“Hide Game” versus “Mark as Private”

You can use both settings if you want: Hide Game controls your library display, while Mark as Private controls what other Steam users can see. Older guides that recommend only Hide Game are addressing library organization, not privacy.

- Open your Steam profile.
- Select Edit Profile.
- Open Privacy Settings.
- Set Game details to Private.
Steam defines Game details as your owned and wishlisted games, achievements, and playtime. This setting also affects whether other users can see that you are in a game and which title is running. It is much broader than privatizing one game, so use it only if hiding the whole category is acceptable. Steam describes these account-level controls in its privacy settings announcement.
Invisible status is not game privacy
Steam’s Invisible presence option makes you appear offline while retaining access to your friends list and chat. It is useful for a temporary offline appearance, but it does not remove a game from your ownership, profile, or activity records. Use Mark as Private for a specific title and Game details: Private for the entire category.
Limits and exceptions
Multiplayer servers and matchmaking
Steam says a private setting does not guarantee anonymity inside a multiplayer game. In a title using Steam matchmaking, your Steam ID may be visible to other players on the same server. The game’s own player list, social features, screenshots, streams, or external services can also reveal activity.
Direct invitations
If you invite a friend to join a private game, Steam says that friend can see your in-game status until you leave the game or disconnect from Steam.

Activity seen before privatizing
New activity for a private game is suppressed from the relevant Steam feed, but changing the setting cannot erase something another person already saw, remembered, saved, or captured elsewhere. Do not treat it as retroactive deletion of every notification or screenshot.
Per-friend hiding
Steam’s standard controls are account-wide or game-specific, not a simple list that hides one title from exactly one friend while showing it to everyone else. Use Mark as Private when the title should be hidden from Steam users generally.
Steam Families and sharing
Private status can affect whether a title is eligible to appear in a shared family library. Steam’s current interface and family rules can change, so check your own Steam Families management screen before relying on sharing for a private game.
Private purchases
Valve introduced a privacy option in the Steam shopping cart so a buyer can mark a game private before completing payment. Add the title to your cart, use the title’s privacy option if it is offered in your checkout, and complete the purchase. The control may not appear identically in every platform, region, or checkout layout; the announcement is dated December 20, 2023.

Undo private or hidden status
- Find the title in your library. If you also hid it, open the library’s hidden-games view or search for it.
- Open the game’s gear or Settings menu and choose Manage.
- Choose the current reverse action, such as Remove Private (Steam’s wording may vary).
- If the title was also hidden from your library, restore its normal library visibility separately.
Removing private status makes the game subject to your normal profile and Game details privacy settings again; it does not guarantee that previously seen activity can be taken back.
Check what friends can see
After changing the setting, view your profile while logged out, in a private browser window, or from a second Steam account. Check both the profile’s games list and recently played area. A trusted friend can also verify the result, but remember that multiplayer sessions and direct invitations have the exceptions described above.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can friends see a game marked private?
Steam hides the title’s ownership, playtime, ordinary in-game status, profile placement, and related activity from normal Steam views. Friends can still encounter your identity in the same multiplayer session or see your status after you directly invite them.

Can I hide a game from only one friend?
Steam does not provide a straightforward per-friend privacy list for individual games. Marking a game private generally hides it from other Steam users.
Does this work on Steam Deck?
The account setting is the same, but Steam Deck, Big Picture, web, and desktop layouts can place the management control differently. Look for the game’s management menu and the Mark as Private action.
Can I privately buy a Steam game?
Steam’s cart can offer a privacy option before purchase. Availability and placement may differ by checkout interface, platform, or region.

Can other players identify me in multiplayer?
