Short answer: the iPad mini (A17 Pro)—often called the iPad mini 7—is an excellent compact gaming tablet, but it is not a replacement for a Steam Deck or Windows handheld. It works brilliantly for mobile games, Apple Arcade, selected premium ports, cloud gaming and remote play. It falls short on native PC-library access, integrated controls and reliable offline AAA gaming.
What the iPad mini 7 actually is
Apple introduced the current iPad mini on October 23, 2024. Its official name is iPad mini (A17 Pro); “iPad mini 7” is the common shorthand. The US launch price was $499 for 128GB. Apple currently offers 128GB, 256GB and 512GB configurations. See the official specifications and launch announcement.

Why the A17 Pro is capable—but not automatically a PC-handheld equivalent
Apple says the A17 Pro is 30% faster in CPU performance and 25% faster in GPU performance than the previous iPad mini’s A15 Bionic. It also brings hardware-accelerated ray tracing, Dynamic Caching and hardware-accelerated mesh shading. Those features help games built specifically for Apple silicon.
Those percentages are Apple’s comparisons, not independent gaming benchmarks. An A17 Pro is not directly interchangeable with the Steam Deck’s AMD APU or the Ryzen Z1/Z2 chips in Windows handhelds: the architectures, operating systems, graphics APIs, power limits and game builds differ. Peak chip capability therefore tells you less than whether a particular iPadOS game is well optimized and how it performs after sustained play.

The controller changes the experience
Without an accessory, the mini is a touchscreen tablet. With a proper controller, it becomes a credible small handheld setup. A week-long hands-on test from Laptop Mag used the Razer Kishi Ultra and praised its clicky controls, haptics, triggers and grip. The controller connects over USB-C and supports pass-through charging.
- Physical sticks, triggers and a D-pad make action games substantially more comfortable than touch controls.
- The mini remains light by itself, but the controller adds width, weight and another item to pack.
- Many grips require removing a case, and you should check the fit, USB-C connector clearance and port stress on the Razer product page.
- Unlike a Steam Deck, ROG Ally or Legion Go, the controls are not permanently attached and the tablet cannot be used as a controller-equipped device while the accessory is elsewhere.
Laptop Mag listed the Kishi Ultra at $149 originally and $129 at the retailer shown in its article. Those are historical prices, not a verified August 2026 street price.
What you can play on iPadOS
Native games and premium ports
The strongest case for the mini is a good selection of games that run locally. Current coverage identifies Hades, Stardew Valley, Dead Cells, Dredge, the Kingdom games, Civilization VI, Assassin’s Creed Mirage, Resident Evil 4, Zenless Zone Zero, Death’s Door and Death Stranding among the relevant examples. Resident Evil Village is another demanding Apple-silicon title to check.

Availability, pricing, controller support and offline behavior can change by country and App Store listing. A Steam, console or Mac purchase does not automatically grant the iPadOS version. Check each current listing before buying, particularly for large AAA downloads and titles that support only newer devices.
Apple Arcade
Apple Arcade is a curated subscription catalogue, not an equivalent to Steam. It can be convenient for offline downloads and removes advertising and in-app purchases from its games, but the value depends on whether its current catalogue matches your preferred genres. Disney Dreamlight Valley is one example available through Apple Arcade. Check the current US price, family-sharing rules and regional catalogue at Apple Arcade.
Cloud gaming
Xbox Cloud Gaming, GeForce NOW, Amazon Luna and similar services can turn the mini into a portable streaming screen. On iPad, browser access is often less integrated than a native PC launcher; Laptop Mag specifically identified that friction. Start at Xbox Cloud Gaming, Xbox Game Pass or GeForce NOW.

- Use a stable 5GHz or Wi‑Fi 6E connection where possible; 5G performance varies with signal and congestion.
- Expect image compression, audio and input delay, login steps and browser full-screen quirks.
- A brief connection drop can interrupt play even when the iPad itself is performing perfectly.
- A subscription may still require you to own a game, depending on the service and title.
Remote play
Steam Link, PS Remote Play, Xbox Remote Play and Moonlight/Sunshine stream from another computer or console. Steam Link is useful if you already have a gaming PC, but remote play is not evidence that the iPad is running those PC games locally.

The mini’s 8.3-inch, 2266 × 1488, 326ppi display is exceptionally sharp for its size, with P3 color, full lamination and an antireflective coating. Its roughly 4:3 shape is excellent for text, strategy interfaces and tablet apps, but some widescreen games show unused space or unusual framing. Apple does not list a 120Hz refresh rate.

ASUS lists its current ROG Xbox Ally range with Windows 11, AMD Z2-family processors and 120Hz displays. Lenovo lists Legion Go Gen 2 access to Steam, PC Game Pass, Epic and other PC ecosystems. These are fundamentally different platforms, not simply faster or slower tablets.

Battery, heat and offline travel
Apple’s “up to 10 hours” figure covers web browsing or video playback. It is not a gaming-runtime promise, and it should not be compared directly with a handheld PC’s advertised endurance. Demanding games can draw power differently from streaming video, while controller pass-through charging changes the setup again.
The practical test is sustained play: record frame-rate stability, battery drain per hour, surface temperature and any throttling after 30 and 60 minutes. A short launch sequence can look excellent while heat and power limits reduce performance later. For travel, verify that downloaded games launch in airplane mode, that sign-in is not required again, and that the controller reconnects without a network.

Compare the system you will actually carry:
- iPad mini storage and connectivity model
- Controller and any case you must remove to use it
- Optional cellular plan
- Paid games or Apple Arcade subscription
- Cloud-gaming subscription and any games you still need to buy
The iPad mini launched at $499 for 128GB in the US. Around August 16–18, 2026, research results showed ASUS pricing of $599.99 for the ROG Xbox Ally and $999.99 for the ROG Xbox Ally X, while Lenovo listed Legion Go Gen 2 from $1,099.99. These are US observations that can change with configuration, promotions, stock and retailer; they are not universal street prices.

The dedicated handhelds cost more or less depending on model, but include controls and a gaming-oriented chassis. The mini’s extra value is that it is also a small tablet for reading, video, notes and general iPadOS work.
Who should buy which device?
Choose the iPad mini if
- You already want a compact iPad and will use it for more than games.
- Your library is mostly mobile games, Apple Arcade, indies, strategy or selected premium ports.
- You value low weight, instant wake and a very sharp display.
- You primarily use cloud gaming or remote play.
- You do not want Windows maintenance.
Choose a SteamOS handheld if
- Your priority is native Steam access and offline PC gaming.
- You want integrated controls and a console-like suspend-and-resume experience.
- You accept more weight and a device designed mainly for games.
Choose a Windows handheld if
- You need PC Game Pass installed locally, multiple launchers, mods or broad anti-cheat compatibility.
- You want current 120Hz panels and a self-contained PC gaming system.
- You can tolerate Windows updates, desktop-style setup and heavier hardware.
Choose neither if
- You would buy the mini solely as a game machine and do not want its tablet functions.
- You require every game to work offline with built-in controls.
Verdict
As a compact gaming tablet, the iPad mini 7 is excellent. The A17 Pro, sharp 8.3-inch display and very low tablet weight make mobile games, Apple Arcade, selected AAA ports, cloud gaming and remote play unusually enjoyable with a good controller.
As a handheld gaming PC, it is not a rival in the full platform sense. iPadOS has a smaller, more fragmented native library; Steam and PC Game Pass access generally means streaming or remote play; controls are an extra purchase; and offline compatibility is much narrower. Buy it when you want an excellent small iPad that also games. Buy a SteamOS or Windows handheld when native PC games are the reason for the purchase.
