Remove one letter from each word to reveal a tree: FAIR minus A is FIR, MARPLE minus R is MAPLE, POPULAR minus U is POPLAR, and PSALM minus S is PALM.

How to approach this puzzle
Lock in the obvious time words first
INTERVAL, PERIOD, SPAN, and STRETCH share a direct meaning, making DURATION the cleanest starting point.
Separate access items from names
LANYARD, PASS, STAMP, and WRISTBAND all relate to credentials or admission. This removes several words that might otherwise look like general objects.

Watch for the MARPLE red herring
MARPLE strongly suggests the detective Miss Marple, but it belongs with the tree transformation: removing R produces MAPLE. The same letter-removal trick applies to the other purple words.
Use elimination carefully
Once the first three categories are identified, the remaining four words form the tree group. Connections allows up to four incorrect guesses, so avoid submitting a tempting association before checking every word against the category.
