Pokémon GO does not document a direct Samsung Health connection for Android. Its Adventure Sync instructions refer to Google Fit. If you want to use steps recorded by Samsung Health, Health Connect may provide a bridge, but the full Samsung Health-to-Pokémon GO chain is not guaranteed. Check each link—Samsung Health, Health Connect, Google Fit where required, and Pokémon GO—instead of assuming a step total in Samsung Health will count in the game.
What “connecting” Samsung Health to Pokémon GO means
These are separate apps and permissions, not one direct pairing:
- Samsung Health records steps using your phone or a synchronized Galaxy Watch.
- Health Connect can share selected health data between compatible Android apps when the source can write it and the receiving app can read it.
- Pokémon GO uses Adventure Sync to credit eligible activity while the game is closed. Niantic’s Android instructions refer to Google Fit, not Samsung Health.
The likely route is Galaxy phone or watch → Samsung Health → Health Connect → Google Fit, if needed and able to read the data → Pokémon GO. Health Connect is a possible intermediary, not a guarantee that Pokémon GO will accept Samsung Health data. Niantic’s Adventure Sync instructions describe the Google Fit connection; Google’s Health Connect instructions explain app permissions and data sharing.

Adventure Sync tracks distance while Pokémon GO is not open and can contribute to Buddy Candy, Egg hatching, and weekly fitness reports and related rewards. It becomes available at Trainer Level 5. Niantic’s Adventure Sync page lists these features and the level requirement.

What you need before setup
- An Android phone with working motion sensors, Pokémon GO installed from Google Play, and Samsung Health recording activity.
- A Pokémon GO account at Trainer Level 5 or higher.
- Health Connect, if you are testing the Samsung Health bridge. It is built into Android 14 and later; on Android 13 and earlier, it may require the separate Health Connect app. On Android 14 and later, Google places it under Settings → Security and privacy → Privacy controls → Health Connect. Menus and availability can vary by Android release and device. Google’s setup instructions give the current general path.
- Google Fit installed and connected if Pokémon GO requires it on your device.
- Location access for Pokémon GO, including background access or “Allow all the time” if your Android version presents that option. Location permission is separate from health-data access.
- Battery settings that allow Pokémon GO and the fitness apps in the chain to run in the background.
- Sensor-recorded activity. Niantic says manually entered fitness data does not count toward Adventure Sync. Niantic’s troubleshooting guide covers manual entries, permissions, and battery restrictions.
Set up the Samsung Health data route
1. Confirm Samsung Health is recording current steps
- Open Samsung Health and note the step total.
- Walk for several minutes with the phone or paired Galaxy Watch recording activity, then check whether the total changes.
- If you use a watch, open Galaxy Wearable and make sure it is connected and synchronized with the phone. Samsung says Bluetooth is required for watch-to-phone synchronization. Samsung’s troubleshooting guide covers the connection and sync checks.
If Samsung Health has not recorded new steps, fix that recording or watch-sync issue first; downstream apps cannot read activity that has not arrived in Samsung Health.
2. Allow Samsung Health to write to Health Connect
In Samsung Health, look under Settings → Health Connect or Settings → Connected services → Health Connect. The label may vary by Samsung Health version and region. Follow the prompt to open Health Connect, select Samsung Health, and allow it to write Steps and any other data category you intend to share, such as Distance or Exercise. Then check Health Connect for new Samsung Health step records.
Google’s general permission path is Health Connect → App permissions → choose the app → choose data permissions → Allow. Permissions are specific to each app and data type: permission for Samsung Health to write steps does not automatically let Google Fit read them. Google says connected apps may read the previous 30 days and new data written afterward, subject to the data type and permissions. See Google’s Health Connect instructions.

3. Check Google Fit, if your Pokémon GO setup requires it
- Open or install Google Fit and check whether it receives current steps.
- In Google Fit settings, look for Manage connected apps or the equivalent control. Menu wording can differ by Google Fit version.
- If Google Fit offers Health Connect integration, grant it permission to read the relevant data, such as Steps or Distance, then check whether new activity appears in Google Fit.
- Where available, confirm Pokémon GO appears in Google Fit’s connected-app list. Niantic recommends checking this connection and says devices incompatible with Google Fit cannot use Adventure Sync’s fitness-tracking feature. See Niantic’s troubleshooting steps.
Google Fit’s menus and Health Connect behavior are not identical on every device or app version. If Google Fit cannot read the Samsung Health data, the bridge has not been established, even if Health Connect shows that Samsung Health wrote steps.
4. Enable Adventure Sync in Pokémon GO
- Open Pokémon GO and tap Main Menu → Settings → General.
- Turn on Adventure Sync and approve the requested fitness and location permissions.
- Close Pokémon GO, then walk while Samsung Health or the synchronized watch records activity.

Test whether the chain is working
Use a new, short walk rather than relying on an all-day total that may have been recorded before permissions were enabled.

- Note the current Samsung Health step total and Pokémon GO Egg or Buddy distance.
- Walk for 10–20 minutes with Pokémon GO closed.
- Check that Samsung Health recorded new steps. If you use a watch, make sure its data has synchronized to the phone.
- Check that Health Connect contains the new step data.
- If Google Fit is part of your setup, check that it can read the new data.
- Reopen Pokémon GO and check Egg distance, Buddy distance, or weekly progress.
Pokémon GO updates may be delayed: Niantic says synchronization can take up to several hours. Restarting the game may help. See Niantic’s troubleshooting guidance. A Samsung Health step total alone does not show that the game received or credited the activity.
Find where missing progress stopped
- Samsung Health has no new steps: Check that the phone is recording activity. For a Galaxy Watch, verify Bluetooth and watch-to-phone synchronization in Galaxy Wearable and Samsung Health.
- Samsung Health has steps, but Health Connect does not: Check that Samsung Health has permission to write Steps and that new data is syncing.
- Health Connect has steps, but Google Fit does not: Check Google Fit’s Health Connect read permissions. A source app’s write permission does not grant the receiving app read access.
- Google Fit has steps, but Pokémon GO does not: Confirm Adventure Sync is still on, Pokémon GO is connected where the Google Fit control is available, and Pokémon GO has the required location permission.
- The whole chain looks correct, but progress is still missing: Allow time for synchronization, then restart Pokémon GO and test with a new walk. Check battery restrictions before reinstalling apps.
Health Connect does not support Android multi-user profiles such as a work profile, which can break an otherwise plausible sharing setup. Google documents this limitation.
Galaxy Watch and phone differences
A phone-only test has fewer links: the phone records activity, then Samsung Health can share it onward. A Galaxy Watch lets you walk without carrying the phone, but adds a synchronization step: watch → Galaxy Wearable/Samsung Health on the phone → Health Connect → Google Fit, if applicable → Pokémon GO. Watch activity may not reach downstream apps until the watch has synced to the phone. Samsung’s watch-sync guidance covers Bluetooth and the phone connection.

A Galaxy Watch is optional. If your aim is simply to test Adventure Sync, start with the phone’s own step recording and the Google Fit route documented by Niantic where available. Buying a watch solely for this setup adds hardware and another possible point of failure.

- Sync timing: The apps may update at different times; Adventure Sync can take up to several hours to synchronize, according to Niantic.
- Different sources or priorities: Several apps may write steps to Health Connect. Google says Health Connect uses app priority when multiple apps write the same data category, so a displayed total can depend on source selection. Google explains Health Connect data priority.
- Background restrictions: Battery Saver, Android battery optimization, or Samsung sleeping-app controls may interrupt background recording or syncing. Niantic identifies battery-saving modes as a possible cause of missing activity. See Niantic’s troubleshooting guidance.
- Different game eligibility and calculation: Pokémon GO is not a general step counter, and its credited distance need not match Samsung Health’s total one-for-one.
- Manual entries: Manually added steps or workouts in a fitness app do not count toward Adventure Sync, according to Niantic. See the relevant troubleshooting note.
Permissions, battery settings, and recovery
Pokémon GO repeatedly asks for location permission
In Android settings, open Pokémon GO’s app permissions and restore the required Location access. Also make sure Location is enabled on the device. Menu names vary by Android and Samsung One UI version; Niantic’s Android guidance describes enabling Location in the game’s app permissions. Read Niantic’s troubleshooting steps. Location access for Adventure Sync is distinct from Health Connect’s fitness-data permissions.

Review Android battery optimization and Samsung’s background-use or sleeping-app controls for Pokémon GO, Samsung Health, Google Fit, and Health Connect. Also check Pokémon GO’s in-game Battery Saver setting. Exact controls differ by device and software version. Restricting any link in the chain can delay or prevent background recording or transfer.

Adventure Sync turned off after refreshing game data
Niantic warns that Pokémon GO’s Refresh Game Data option may untoggle Adventure Sync. If you use it, return to Main Menu → Settings → General and check the Adventure Sync switch afterward. See Niantic’s Android troubleshooting guide.
Manage health-data access
Health Connect permissions are granted by app and data category. If you no longer want to share activity, open Health Connect’s App permissions, select the app, and revoke the relevant access. Grant only the categories needed for your setup, such as Steps. Pokémon GO’s location permission is managed separately in Android app settings; changing Health Connect permissions does not change it.
