Yes—if you buy the right model. The Samsung Odyssey G5 can deliver a sharp 1440p image and, on compatible units, 120Hz from a PS5. However, the common G51C and G55C use HDMI 2.0, have weak HDR and visible VA motion smearing, and should not be purchased for guaranteed PS5 VRR or 4K/120Hz. The flat G51C is the safer choice when prices are close; the curved G55C only makes sense as a discounted budget option.

Identify your exact Odyssey G5 first
“Odyssey G5” is a family name, not a single monitor. Check the label on the rear or the retailer’s full model code before relying on any review.

Resolution and refresh rate on PS5
1440p is the sensible target
A 27-inch 2560×1440 panel is visibly sharper than 1080p at normal desk distance and is a good match for PS5. A 32-inch 1440p G5 produces a larger image but lower pixel density. 1080p remains a useful fallback when a handshake fails. A 1440p panel is not a native 4K display; any 4K signal acceptance or downscaling is a separate feature.

What 165Hz actually means
The 165Hz headline is primarily for PC use. PS5 games generally offer 60Hz or 120Hz modes, and the console does not turn a 60fps game into 120fps merely because the monitor is rated at 165Hz.
The G51C has been independently tested without basic PS5 compatibility problems. Samsung lists the G51C/G55C class as 1440p, 165Hz HDMI 2.0 monitors, but the exact HDMI input must accept the PS5 signal.
How to set up 1440p/120Hz
- Connect the PS5 directly to the monitor’s HDMI input. Bypass an AV receiver, switch or capture device while testing.
- Use the PS5 cable or another known-good high-speed HDMI cable.
- Open Settings > Screen and Video > Video Output.
- Set Resolution to 1440p or Automatic.
- Set 120 Hz Output to Automatic.
- Select Test 1440p Output. Sony’s test checks available 60Hz/120Hz, HDR and, where applicable, VRR modes.
- In a game that offers it, choose the performance or 120Hz mode.
Confirm the incoming signal in the monitor’s information display if available. A 120Hz-capable monitor cannot make a 30fps or 60fps game render faster.

- Recheck the full model code and ensure the PS5 is connected to HDMI, not DisplayPort.
- Try the included or a certified high-speed HDMI cable, then rerun Test 1440p Output.
- Restart both the PS5 and monitor and leave 120 Hz Output on Automatic.
- Temporarily disable HDR to isolate a bandwidth or handshake issue.
- Test 1080p at 120Hz. If that works but 1440p/120Hz does not, the limitation may be the variant, firmware, cable or handshake.
- If the screen remains blank, return Resolution to Automatic and power-cycle both devices.

PS5 VRR: the biggest compatibility warning
Do not equate Samsung FreeSync with PS5 VRR. FreeSync is the monitor’s adaptive-sync technology; PS5 VRR uses a specific HDMI implementation associated with compatible displays, especially HDMI 2.1 models. The common G51C and G55C provide HDMI 2.0, not HDMI 2.1. Testing of the older G55T found PS5 VRR incompatible because the console used HDMI Forum VRR rather than the monitor’s supported method.
Firmware and model differences can change results, so neither universal support nor universal rejection is justified. Do not buy a G5 specifically for PS5 VRR unless the exact model has independent confirmation of that signal.
Picture quality, HDR and viewing experience
Contrast versus HDR impact
VA panels provide useful native contrast for dark scenes. Samsung advertises HDR10 on the G51C/G55C family, meaning the monitor can receive an HDR signal. That does not establish high-quality HDR: independent testing found no effective local dimming, limited brightness and highlights that do not have convincing impact. If HDR looks dim or washed out, leaving it off is reasonable.
Curved G55C or flat G51C?
The G55C’s 1000R curve can feel immersive in a single-player setup and has strong native contrast. The G51C is flat and tested better overall for gaming, including response behavior and latency. Curve preference is personal; it does not make the G55C the faster monitor.

27, 32 or 34 inches
- 27-inch 1440p: the safest desk choice for sharper console detail.
- 32-inch 1440p: larger picture, lower pixel density; verify the exact model.
- 34-inch ultrawide G5: 21:9 and 3440×1440. PS5 output is designed around 16:9, so expect scaling, unused side areas or a non-ideal presentation.
Audio and stand
The cited G5 models should not be treated as having built-in speakers. Plan on a headset through the DualSense controller, external speakers or a compatible audio solution. Samsung lists a headphone connection on the G55C but no integrated speakers. The G55C stand offers tilt only, lacking height, swivel and pivot adjustment; ergonomics may require a VESA arm or riser.
Motion clarity and input lag
Independent testing found slow response behavior and blurry motion on the G51C, with visible smearing on the G55C. The G55C’s input lag is low at 120Hz but substantially higher at 60Hz, which matters because many PS5 games run at 60fps. Samsung’s “1ms” figure is an MPRT marketing specification under particular settings, not a guarantee that pixels transition in one millisecond during normal play.
For competitive shooters, these weaknesses are more noticeable than the difference between 144Hz and 165Hz. The monitors remain playable, but they are not class-leading displays for fast camera movement.

Who should buy an Odyssey G5?
Buy it when
- You want inexpensive 1440p gaming and have confirmed HDMI 1440p/120Hz support for the exact model.
- You mainly play at 60Hz or 120Hz and do not require premium HDR.
- The monitor is substantially discounted.
- You also use a PC and can benefit from 165Hz FreeSync.
Skip it when
- You require 4K/120Hz or dependable PS5 VRR.
- You want bright, controlled HDR with local dimming.
- VA smearing or elevated 60Hz latency would bother you.
- You need a highly adjustable stand or built-in speakers.
- You are considering the 34-inch ultrawide for a conventional PS5 setup.
- A similarly priced QHD monitor offers HDMI 2.1 and confirmed PS5 VRR support.
Current model and price checks
Samsung’s product pages showed the 27-inch G51C at $349.99 and the G55C at $299.99 when checked on August 16, 2026; both listings indicated unavailable delivery or pickup at that time. Prices and stock change, so treat those figures as dated snapshots, not permanent pricing. Official pages: G51C and G55C.
The newer 32-inch G51F is a separate generation, listed by Samsung at $349.99 in the same snapshot. Do not assume its HDMI or PS5 VRR behavior matches the G51C/G55C without checking its specifications: G51F product page.
Final verdict
The Odyssey G5 is a conditional PS5 recommendation. A correctly identified G51C can be a good low-cost 1440p/120Hz monitor, provided you accept mediocre HDR, motion blur and no guaranteed PS5 VRR. The G55C offers the same basic resolution and refresh target with a curve, but its 60Hz latency and smearing make it harder to recommend unless it is clearly cheaper. If HDMI 2.1, VRR, strong HDR or 4K output matters, choose a monitor with those features explicitly confirmed rather than paying for the G5’s 165Hz PC specification.
