Use the narrowest setting available: on Xbox, open Xbox button → Profile & system → Settings → Preferences → Notifications and disable the achievement option. On Windows, use Settings → System → Notifications → Xbox Game Bar. If no achievement-only switch exists, disable notification banners or Game Bar notifications instead; those broader controls also hide other Xbox alerts.
First, identify where the alert comes from
An achievement can trigger more than one notification route. Change the setting on the device that actually displays the pop-up or plays the sound.
- Xbox One or Xbox Series X|S: a toast appears over console gameplay.
- Windows desktop: a banner appears through Windows Notifications.
- Xbox Game Bar: an overlay appears while playing on a PC, usually near the edge of the game window.
- Xbox mobile app: a phone or tablet alert is controlled separately.
- Sound only: the visual banner may already be disabled, while notification audio remains enabled.
The same Microsoft account can deliver an achievement alert to several devices, so turning off the console setting does not automatically silence Windows or mobile notifications.

Menu names can change with dashboard updates, but the current route is generally:
- Press the Xbox button on the controller.
- Open Profile & system.
- Select Settings.
- Open Preferences, then Notifications.
- Choose Xbox notifications or the equivalent notification category.
- Turn off Achievements, Achievement notifications, or a similarly named dedicated option.
The console-wide banner control is documented for Xbox One and Series X|S in Digital Trends’ current walkthrough. If your dashboard does not show an achievement-specific switch, return to the Xbox notification settings and turn off Notification banners. This suppresses on-screen banners from other Xbox features as well, including messages, party or chat alerts, friend-online notices, invites, and some capture or recording notifications.
Because Microsoft changes dashboard labels and groups, use the closest equivalent wording rather than assuming every console has identical menus.

Turn off achievement notifications on Windows 10 or 11
Use an achievement-only option when available
Some Xbox app or Game Bar builds expose a dedicated setting such as Notify me when I unlock an achievement. If you see it, open the Xbox app or press Win + G for Xbox Game Bar, open its account or settings area, select Notifications, and disable only that option. The exact label and location depend on the app build, Windows version, and account rollout.

Use Windows’ per-app control as the reliable fallback
- Open Start → Settings.
- Select System → Notifications.
- Find Xbox Game Bar under apps and other senders. On some installations it may be listed as Xbox or another Xbox-related sender.
- Switch notifications Off.
Microsoft documents these per-app controls for Windows 10 and Windows 11 in Notifications and Do not disturb in Windows. Turning off the sender stops achievement banners delivered by that sender, but normally also stops its messages, party, friend, invite, and other Game Bar alerts.
Hide banners but keep notification-center entries
For a less drastic change, select the relevant Xbox sender in Settings → System → Notifications. Turn off Show notification banners, while leaving Show notifications in notification center enabled. Windows can also separately control Play a sound when a notification arrives. This lets you keep a record without an interruption on screen.
Stop the sound without losing every visual alert
On Windows, open the Xbox or Xbox Game Bar sender’s notification settings and disable Play a sound when a notification arrives. A banner can remain visible while its sound is muted. Console dashboards do not expose one universal sound switch on every version; check notification preferences and, if necessary, audio or accessibility settings. Game audio and notification audio can be separate, so muting the game itself may not solve the problem.
Reduce interruptions without disabling notifications
Move Game Bar notifications
Microsoft’s April 2026 Xbox update added Game Bar placement controls. Open Game Bar → Settings widget → More settings → General and choose a less intrusive notification location if that option is present. Placement changes where alerts appear; it does not turn them off. See the April Xbox Update.

Use Do Not Disturb or gaming suppression temporarily
Windows Do Not Disturb and gaming-related notification behavior can suppress or prioritize alerts while you play. They are broader, temporary alternatives rather than achievement-only controls and may affect unrelated applications or priority exceptions. Microsoft describes these options in its Windows notification guidance.
If alerts keep appearing
- Watch where the next alert appears: console, Windows desktop, Game Bar, mobile app, or browser.
- Change the setting for that exact device or sender. Check both Xbox and Xbox Game Bar entries in Windows Notifications.
- Restart the Xbox app, Game Bar, or console after changing the setting.
- Update the console, Xbox app, Game Bar, and Windows. Preview or Insider builds can expose different controls.
- Check Windows Do Not Disturb, priority notifications, and exceptions if a banner bypasses the normal switch.
Do not use registry edits or uninstall Game Bar as the normal fix. If the achievement toggle is missing, the broader console banner or Windows Game Bar switch is the supported fallback.
What disabling the alert does—and does not—change
Notification settings control delivery of the toast, banner, or sound; they are not intended to disable achievement unlocking. After changing the setting, unlock an easy achievement in a game and check the game’s achievement list or your Xbox profile. If the achievement is absent there, investigate account syncing, Xbox services, or the game separately rather than assuming the notification preference erased it.
Hiding an achievement game from your profile is a different privacy or presentation feature. Xbox discussed separate achievement-history controls for Xbox Insiders in 2026; those controls do not replace notification settings. See Xbox’s achievement improvements announcement.

Version and rollout notes
Xbox achievement visuals and controls are being refreshed during 2026, and Insider consoles may differ from general-release dashboards. Windows gaming features can also depend on the Windows version and supported market. Microsoft’s Windows Gaming: Full screen experience page describes version limitations. If a label in this guide is missing, look for the equivalent Xbox notification category before using the broader switch.
