To reduce gaming latency in Windows 11, first identify whether the delay is in your input, frame rendering, display, or network. Then change the setting tied to that bottleneck: set the monitor to its highest supported refresh rate, stabilize frame times, use in-game NVIDIA Reflex or AMD Anti-Lag 2 when supported, and improve the network only if ping or packet loss is the problem. High ping and sluggish mouse-to-screen response are different problems.

Identify which kind of latency you have

“Lag” can describe several delays. An offline game can feel slow with excellent internet ping, while a game can respond promptly to your mouse even when its online server is far away.

  • Input latency: time from a mouse or controller action until the game processes it. Wireless interference, unstable polling, USB power management, CPU contention, overlays, and queued frames can contribute.
  • Render latency: time the CPU and GPU take to produce a frame. GPU saturation, a CPU bottleneck, demanding effects, shader compilation, background work, and thermal throttling can all matter.
  • Display latency: time between a completed frame and the panel showing it. Refresh rate, V-Sync and variable refresh rate (VRR) configuration, monitor response behavior, and television image processing affect this part.
  • Network latency: time for data to travel between the PC, network, ISP, game server, and back. Wi-Fi interference, congestion, routing, server distance, packet loss, and uploads or downloads can affect it.

Measure a baseline before changing settings

Run the same game mode or repeatable scene before and after each change. Record the game and mode, resolution, graphics API if known, average FPS, 1% lows if available, frame-time graph, CPU and GPU utilization and temperatures, in-game ping and packet loss, connection type, and current V-Sync, VRR, Reflex or Anti-Lag, and FPS-cap settings. Change one variable at a time; a subjective sense that a game feels better is useful, but it cannot reliably identify small differences on its own.

  • Start with the game’s own frame-time and network telemetry when available.
  • Use Task Manager’s Processes and Performance views to look for CPU, GPU, memory, disk, or background-app contention.
  • NVIDIA FrameView reports FPS and latency-related metrics, but its PC Latency metric excludes mouse and monitor latency; it is not a complete end-to-end measurement. See the FrameView User Guide.
  • NVIDIA Reflex Analyzer measures end-to-end system latency, but requires compatible NVIDIA hardware, display, and peripherals. Details are on NVIDIA’s Reflex page.

Set up the display and frame delivery

Use the intended refresh rate

  1. Open Settings > System > Display > Advanced display.
  2. Select the gaming monitor and choose the highest stable refresh rate available at the resolution you use.
  3. Check that the GPU, cable, adapter, and display are actually negotiating that resolution and refresh rate.

A higher refresh rate can make updates appear sooner and improve responsiveness, but it does not remove rendering, processing, or network delay. The result depends on the display and the frame rate the PC can sustain. Microsoft documents the setting and its hardware qualifications in its refresh-rate guide. Dynamic Refresh Rate (DRR) requires compatible hardware, including a VRR-capable display supporting at least 120 Hz; Microsoft notes that DRR can limit the maximum refresh rate in some games. If a game is running below the expected rate, turn DRR off and compare.

Dell 24 240Hz Gaming Monitor - SE2426HG - 23.8-inch FHD (1920x1080) 240Hz Display, in-Plane Switching (IPS) Technology, AMD FreeSync™ Premium, TÜV 3-Star, 2X HDMI, DisplayPort 1.4, Tilt
  • Smooth motion: 240Hz refresh rate and fast 0.5ms response time provide crisp visuals and fluid movement with less input lag.
  • Seamless gaming: FreeSync Premium and HDMI VRR eliminate tearing for smooth, responsive PC and console gameplay.
  • Fast IPS: Faster 0.5ms response with excellent color accuracy across wide IPS viewing angles.
  • Rich color: 99% sRGB color coverage delivers vivid, detailed imagery with strong accuracy.
  • Eye comfort: TÜV Rheinland 3‑star certified display lowers blue light while preserving color quality.

Configure VRR and the panel sensibly

  • Enable FreeSync, G-SYNC, or Adaptive-Sync when supported by the monitor and GPU, then confirm the game is using the intended display.
  • Try the monitor’s Gaming or Fast response setting. If its most aggressive overdrive setting produces bright inverse ghost trails, use a less aggressive mode.
  • On a television, turn off cinema-style image processing or enable its game mode.
  • Use a direct DisplayPort or HDMI connection suitable for the monitor’s resolution and refresh rate.

Choose an FPS and V-Sync strategy

There is no universally best combination of FPS cap, V-Sync, and VRR. Test a strategy that matches your priorities and the monitor’s VRR range rather than stacking several limiters without checking their interaction.

Priority Starting point Trade-off
Competitive, minimum latency Disable V-Sync if tearing is acceptable; use performance settings and keep the GPU from being continually pinned if that creates queued work. May show tearing; lower settings can reduce image quality.
Smooth VRR output Enable compatible VRR and test a cap below the display’s maximum refresh rate. Prefer the in-game limiter if it gives stable frame pacing; compare a driver cap if not. The cap may reduce peak FPS; exact V-Sync behavior depends on the display, game, and VRR setup.
Image quality Keep demanding settings if desired, accepting higher rendering time; reduce the heaviest effects if frame delivery is too slow. Better image quality can mean higher render latency and lower FPS.

Apply the Windows 11 settings that fit your game

Enable windowed-game optimizations when applicable

  1. Open Settings > System > Display > Graphics.
  2. Under Default settings, enable Optimizations for windowed games.
  3. Restart the game and compare its borderless or windowed performance.

This Windows 11 feature targets compatible DirectX 10 and DirectX 11 games in windowed or borderless mode. It changes eligible games from the older blt presentation model to flip model, which can reduce presentation latency and enable features such as Auto HDR and VRR on supported displays. It is not a universal fix for every game or graphics API. See Microsoft’s feature guide and the DirectX team’s explanation.

For a per-game setting, return to Settings > System > Display > Graphics, add or select the game, choose Options, change the applicable windowed-game optimization setting, select Save, and restart the game. If the system has multiple GPUs, the same dialog offers Let Windows decide, Power saving, and High performance; select High performance for a demanding game that is using the wrong GPU.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If the game flickers, crashes, develops visual or HDR problems, or has worse frame pacing, disable the optimization for that title and restart. Compare borderless with exclusive fullscreen. If Auto HDR is on, Microsoft says it automatically turns on windowed-game optimizations; disable Auto HDR for that title before turning the optimization off.

Set power mode and check Game Mode

When gaming on AC power, open Settings > System > Power & battery > Power mode and select Best performance if the PC needs it. This can use more power, generate more heat, and drain a laptop battery faster, as Microsoft notes in its Windows performance guidance. A laptop’s manufacturer performance profile may also affect clocks, fans, and thermals; a power mode cannot fix thermal throttling.

Game Mode is a separate Windows setting, not the power-mode slider. To open its Settings page, use the URI ms-settings:gaming-gamemode in Run or a browser address bar that opens Windows Settings. The URI opens the page; it does not turn Game Mode on by itself. Microsoft documents Settings URIs here and explains that Game Mode operates independently of the power slider here. Game Mode may help prioritize gaming activity, but it is not a guaranteed FPS or latency improvement on every PC.

Treat HAGS as a test, not a tweak to assume

Hardware-Accelerated GPU Scheduling (HAGS), when offered by the system, moves much of GPU scheduling to dedicated GPU hardware. Its effect on latency and frame times varies with the GPU, driver, game, and workload. If you suspect it, compare it on and off in the same scenario, then keep the setting that measures and feels better; do not expect a fixed millisecond improvement. The DirectX team’s graphics-settings explanation describes the feature.

Reduce background work during play

Close or disable unnecessary recording and overlays one at a time, including Xbox Game Bar, Discord, Steam, NVIDIA App, AMD Adrenalin, or monitoring overlays. Also check browsers with many tabs, cloud-sync clients, launchers, video encoders, downloads, and other CPU- or disk-heavy tasks. In Task Manager, inspect Processes and Performance while the game runs, and review Startup apps for programs that do not need to launch with Windows. Microsoft’s performance guidance covers background processes and startup apps.

Do not routinely set a game to Realtime priority, disable core Windows services or security software, apply registry “latency packs,” force timer-resolution changes, or alter HPET or boot settings without a measured, reversible reason. These changes can reduce stability or security and make it harder to identify what actually helped.

Use the game’s native low-latency option

NVIDIA Reflex

If a game offers NVIDIA Reflex, start with its in-game Reflex On setting. Reflex synchronizes CPU and GPU rendering to reduce queued work and system latency in supported games. Prefer this game-integrated control to assuming that the driver’s generic Low Latency Mode is better; avoid stacking queue-management settings without testing. Try On + Boost only if the game or NVIDIA guidance recommends it and the PC has adequate power and thermal headroom. Support and available features depend on the game. NVIDIA’s page discusses Reflex and Reflex 2; do not assume a newer feature is available unless the specific game and hardware support it: NVIDIA Reflex.

AMD Anti-Lag and Anti-Lag 2

AMD Anti-Lag is available through AMD Software: Adrenalin on supported Radeon hardware. Anti-Lag 2 requires game-developer integration, so it is not a universal driver switch for every title. Its supported games can change; check AMD’s current Anti-Lag page for the game and hardware you use.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Open AMD Software: Adrenalin Edition.
  2. Go to Gaming and select the game profile.
  3. Enable the applicable Anti-Lag option and compare in the same game scenario.

AMD also exposes Anti-Lag through HYPR-RX profiles. Treat vendor performance figures as results from their specified systems and games, not as a prediction for every PC. AMD’s support guidance explains configuration.

Improve network latency only if the network is the problem

Try the simplest local fixes first

  • Use Ethernet for competitive online play if practical; it removes the local wireless link as a source of interference.
  • On Wi-Fi, move closer to the access point and try a clear 5 GHz or 6 GHz connection if both router and PC support it. A newer Wi-Fi standard does not guarantee lower ping: signal, router, client, interference, and ISP path still matter.
  • Pause cloud backups, downloads, streaming uploads, and other traffic that can saturate the connection.
  • Choose the game’s nearest suitable region or server, and compare at different times to spot congestion or server-load patterns.
  • Check packet loss and spikes, not only average ping. A slightly higher but stable ping can be preferable to a lower average with severe spikes.

Microsoft describes Wi-Fi 6/6E/7 capabilities and their qualifications in its Wi-Fi guidance.

Test where latency or loss appears

Open Command Prompt and run these tests, replacing the placeholders with your router’s local IP address and, where available, the game server’s domain or address:

ping -n 50 <router-IP>
ping -n 50 1.1.1.1
tracert <game-server-or-domain>
  • High or unstable ping to the router points to the local link, adapter, or router; compare Wi-Fi with Ethernet if possible.
  • A stable router test but poor internet test suggests a problem beyond the local link, such as ISP congestion or routing.
  • Good general internet results but poor in-game ping can point to server distance, game-server load, region selection, or the game service’s network path.

These commands do not prove every hop is responsible for a delay: routers may deprioritize diagnostic traffic. Use the game’s own telemetry and repeat tests to look for consistent patterns. Changing public DNS normally affects name lookup or connection setup, not the latency of an already-established game session.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Address latency spikes under network load

If ping jumps whenever someone uploads or downloads, test router SQM (Smart Queue Management) or QoS (Quality of Service) if available. Correct bandwidth limits matter: queue management can reduce delay from a saturated connection, but may reduce peak throughput and needs appropriate upload and download settings. A route-optimization service can help only if its route to a particular game server is better than the ISP’s; it cannot fix local input lag, Wi-Fi interference, a distant server, or an outage, and may add cost or overhead.

Tune graphics for steadier frame times

If GPU utilization stays near 100%

A saturated GPU can leave less headroom for newly submitted work. Lower the settings that most burden it—often ray tracing, shadows, volumetrics, reflections, and post-processing—try upscaling, or reduce resolution as a test. If the queue or frame pacing remains poor, compare a sensible FPS cap with uncapped performance and use Reflex or Anti-Lag when the game supports it. The trade-off is image quality or peak FPS.

If the CPU is saturated

Reduce CPU-heavy settings such as view distance, crowd density, simulation quality, and physics. Close background applications and check CPU temperatures and clocks for throttling. This can reduce world detail or background functionality.

If FPS is high but play still feels inconsistent

Look at frame-time graphs and 1% lows rather than average FPS alone. Investigate shader compilation, VRR setup, background activity, temperatures, and game- or driver-specific problems. A high average FPS does not ensure evenly spaced frames, and uneven frame delivery can feel worse than a lower but stable rate.

Update selectively and undo regressions

Check Windows Update, GPU and chipset drivers, network-adapter drivers, relevant monitor firmware, and game patch notes when troubleshooting points to them. Update BIOS/UEFI only when the manufacturer documents a relevant fix or compatibility improvement. An update can fix a problem, but should not be assumed to improve latency on every system. Microsoft includes update checks in its Windows performance guidance.

  1. Change one setting or update at a time.
  2. Restart only if the setting or installer requires it.
  3. Repeat the same game scenario and record the measurements.
  4. Undo the change if frame times, crashes, temperatures, or input response get worse.

For a borderless-only problem, compare the windowed-game optimization and exclusive fullscreen, restarting after a setting change. For flicker or VRR problems, check the display’s VRR configuration and try a different supported refresh rate or response mode. If HAGS makes pacing worse, turn it back off. If a driver introduces regressions, use the manufacturer’s supported driver rollback or reinstall options rather than adding unrelated tweaks.

Match the symptom to the next test

What you observe What to test next
High GPU utilization and delayed response Reduce GPU-heavy effects, test upscaling, enable the game’s native low-latency mode if available, and compare a frame cap.
CPU saturation Reduce simulation, crowd, or view-distance settings; close background work; check temperatures and clocks.
Spiky frame times despite high average FPS Check shader compilation, VRR, overlays, background tasks, thermal behavior, and game-specific issues.
Borderless feels slower than expected Enable windowed-game optimizations for a compatible game, compare exclusive fullscreen, and check Auto HDR/VRR interactions.
Ping spikes to the router Test Ethernet, Wi-Fi signal and interference, adapter behavior, and router load.
Local ping is stable but game ping is high Check server region and game-server conditions; if persistent across sessions, investigate ISP routing.
Good ping but mouse-to-screen delay Check refresh rate, GPU load and frame queueing, frame-time stability, display processing, and Reflex or Anti-Lag support.
