To back up PS4 saves to Sony’s online storage, you need an active PlayStation Plus membership. PlayStation Plus Essential is enough. On the PS4, open Settings > Application Data Management > Saved Data in System Storage > Upload to Online Storage, then choose the game and save files. Without PS Plus, you can copy saves to a USB drive instead.
What PS4 cloud storage backs up
Sony calls the feature PlayStation Plus online storage. It stores PS4 game save files associated with your PlayStation Network account so you can retrieve them on a compatible console signed in to that same account. Sony lists an allowance of up to 100 GB of PS4 saved data and a limit of 1,000 PS4 saved-data files. All three U.S. PlayStation Plus tiers—Essential, Extra, and Premium—include this benefit; a higher tier does not increase the stated PS4 save-storage allowance. This is not a backup of the whole console. It does not copy installed games and applications, screenshots, video clips, system settings, or the entire hard drive. For broader recovery, Sony provides a separate USB backup process. Cloud saves are also distinct from a game publisher’s own cross-save service.

- Sign in to the PSN account that owns the save and keep its PlayStation Plus membership active for online storage access.
- Connect the PS4 to the internet. Close the game after saving so the latest progress has been written before you upload.
- Check the save’s timestamp before replacing either a local or cloud copy. PS4 online storage is not a version-history archive: an upload can replace the online file, and a download can replace the local one.
- When moving a save, use the same PSN account on the destination console. The game should be installed to restore and use its save. Different editions, regions, downloadable content, or game versions can affect whether a save is recognized.
Manually upload a PS4 save
- From the PS4 home screen, open Settings.
- Select Application Data Management.
- Select Saved Data in System Storage, then Upload to Online Storage.
- Choose the game and select the save file or files to upload.
- Select Upload. If prompted that an online file already exists, compare the dates and times. Confirm the overwrite only if the local save is the copy you want to keep online.
On some PS4 system software versions, you can also highlight a game in the content launcher or Library, press the controller’s OPTIONS button, and choose Upload/Download Saved Data. Sony documents this shortcut in its PS4 storage-management guide.

Enable automatic uploads
Automatic uploads are intended for the account’s primary PS4. The console needs an internet connection while in Rest Mode, and the auto-upload setting must be enabled.
- Open Settings > Power Saving Settings > Set Features Available in Rest Mode and enable Stay Connected to the Internet.
- Open Settings > Application Data Management > Auto-Upload.
- Enable Enable Automatic Uploads.
- After playing, leave the PS4 in Rest Mode so it can connect and upload.
Automatic uploads can fail if the network is unavailable, storage is full, or the subscription is inactive, so check the cloud copy before relying on it for a console move or repair. If you use someone else’s PS4, start the upload manually; Sony says saves do not automatically upload from a friend’s console. Check that the cloud copy is there
On the PS4, open Settings > Application Data Management > Saved Data in Online Storage and view the available game files in the management options. Confirm that the game and save appear and that the cloud file’s date and time match the version you intend to keep. The exact screen presentation can vary by system software version; use the displayed file information rather than assuming an upload succeeded.
Download a cloud save to a PS4
Exit the game first. Before downloading, compare the cloud and local timestamps. If the local save may be newer, upload it or copy it to USB before proceeding.

- Open Settings.
- Select Application Data Management > Saved Data in Online Storage > Download to System Storage.
- Choose the game and the save file you want.
- Check the timestamps and confirm the overwrite prompt only if the cloud version should replace the local one.

Move a save to another PS4 or PS5
On another PS4, sign in to the same PSN account, install the game, and download the cloud save using the steps above. The save will not appear under a different PSN user simply because the console is yours.

A PS4 save can generally be downloaded to a PS5 using the same account if the game supports that save. A cloud transfer does not turn a PS4 save into a PS5-native save: some games require an in-game import or conversion, and the PS4 and PS5 editions may use different save systems. Compatibility is determined by the game. Sony’s PS5 cloud-storage guide describes PS4 saved data separately from PS5 saved data.

A streamed PlayStation Plus game stores its save in game-streaming storage; a downloaded game stores its save on the console. To move progress between those versions, copy the streamed save to online storage first. On PS4, the streamed-save path is Application Saved Data Management > Saved Data in Game Streaming Storage > Copy to Online Storage. Back up saves without PlayStation Plus
For an individual save, connect a USB drive and use Settings > Application Data Management > Saved Data in System Storage > Copy to USB Storage Device. This is a manual copy that works without an internet connection or PS Plus online storage. Keep the USB copy disconnected from the console when it is not in use if you want it protected from a console failure.
For a broader console backup, Sony’s process can include selected categories of data. First sync trophies by highlighting Trophies from the function screen, pressing OPTIONS, and selecting Sync Trophies. Then connect a FAT32- or exFAT-formatted USB drive and go to Settings > System > Back Up and Restore > Back Up. Choose the categories, name the backup, and start it. Sony says the drive needs at least twice the storage space of the backup file; if space is short, you can omit application data while retaining saved data. Troubleshoot missing or outdated cloud saves

Sony’s documented native PS4 save destinations are PS Plus online storage and USB storage, rather than direct Google Drive, Dropbox, OneDrive, or iCloud integration. For the standard PS4 workflow, use one of those documented options.
