Microsoft’s 2024 Xbox refresh added three configurations: a 1TB white Series S, a 1TB all-digital white Series X, and a 2TB Galaxy Black Series X with a disc drive. They kept the existing Series S and Series X performance tiers; the changes were storage, finish, disc-drive choice and price. The prices below are the U.S. estimated retail prices announced in June 2024, not current 2026 prices.
Which Xbox Series X|S models were new in 2024?
Announced on June 9, 2024, the three consoles were additional configurations for the existing generation—not a replacement generation. Microsoft said they would arrive during the holiday 2024 period, with availability varying by market. Its announcement described the new options as having the same speed and performance as their Series X|S counterparts.

These are the U.S. estimated retail prices Microsoft announced in 2024; prices and lineups varied by market. The 2TB special edition was announced in limited quantities in select markets. Microsoft’s announcement also said the new models would join the existing lineup, rather than immediately replacing every older configuration.
What changed—and what did not?
Xbox Series S 1TB Robot White
This is a digital-only Series S with twice the storage of the original 512GB Series S, in a white finish. More storage makes it easier to keep games installed, but does not raise the Series S graphics or processing tier. Series S suits buyers who value a smaller, lower-cost digital console and do not need a disc drive or Series X’s higher performance target.

Xbox Series X 1TB Digital Edition
The white Digital Edition retains the Series X performance tier and 1TB capacity, but has no optical drive. Treat that as a permanent hardware distinction: it cannot play physical Xbox game discs or UHD Blu-ray discs. It is aimed at people who buy digitally or use a subscription library and do not need disc playback.
Xbox Series X 2TB Galaxy Black Special Edition
This Series X combines a disc drive with 2TB of storage and a Galaxy Black finish featuring a celestial visual effect. It includes a matching Xbox Wireless Controller with a Galaxy Black D-pad and Velocity Green back case. The extra capacity and special design do not make it faster than other Series X models.

Older configurations
The 2024 announcement did not say that all previous models were immediately withdrawn. The broader lineup included the original 512GB Series S, a 1TB Carbon Black Series S, the standard 1TB Carbon Black Series X with a disc drive, and the new models. Microsoft said the Carbon Black Series S could continue to be purchased while supplies lasted. Which configurations are sold depends on market and remaining stock.
When did the 2024 Xbox consoles release?
Microsoft announced the models on June 9, 2024, and initially gave a “holiday 2024” release window—not one worldwide launch date. The console announcement said regional availability would vary and that pre-order details would follow. The Xbox Games Showcase recap likewise framed availability as holiday 2024. A specific date reported for one country or retailer should not be treated as a global release date.

How to choose between the models
Choose Series S 1TB for a lower-cost digital setup
- Choose it if a smaller console, digital purchases or Game Pass matter more than Series X performance.
- Its 1TB drive is roomier than the original 512GB model, but it remains a Series S.
- Do not choose it if you need physical games, UHD Blu-ray playback or Series X’s graphics performance target.
Choose Series X Digital Edition for Series X performance without discs
- It suits a buyer committed to digital games who wants the Series X performance tier.
- It is not a fit for a physical Xbox library, used-disc bargains, lending or reselling games, or UHD Blu-ray playback.
- Compare its live price with the standard disc-drive Series X before buying; the value depends on the price difference and whether you will use a drive.
Choose a disc-drive Series X for physical media
- The standard 1TB Series X is the practical alternative if you own Xbox One or Series discs, buy used games, or watch UHD Blu-rays.
- The 2TB Galaxy Black edition adds built-in capacity and a distinctive design, but only makes sense if those extras justify its price and it is available from a reliable seller.
Think through subscription and storage costs
Game Pass is a separate membership, not included simply because a console is digital. Its plans, prices, catalog and day-one availability can change; check the specific title and tier on the official Game Pass page. A subscription can help build a digital library, but it is an ongoing expense and does not provide ownership of every game.
Advertised 1TB and 2TB capacities are not the same as free space available for games after system software. Large games can fill storage quickly. If you keep a broad digital library installed, compare the cost of expansion storage on the Xbox storage accessories page with the price difference between console models; otherwise, uninstalling and reinstalling games may be enough. No precise usable-space figure is established here for each production revision.

What Series X|S features are shared?
Across the platform, players get features including Quick Resume, SSD-based loading, backward compatibility, Xbox Game Pass support and an Xbox Wireless Controller. Series X is designed for 4K gaming; actual resolution depends on the game and its selected mode. Series X|S can support up to 120 frames per second in compatible games when paired with a suitable display, but that is a maximum capability, not a promise for every title. Display features such as variable refresh rate also require compatible hardware and setup.

Those are baseline-generation specifications, not new hardware introduced in 2024. Series S targets a lower rendering resolution than Series X and is not equivalent to it simply because a display can upscale an image.

Is upgrading from an older Xbox worthwhile?
- 512GB Series S to 1TB Series S: Primarily a storage and color change. It does not deliver Series X graphics performance.
- Series S to Series X Digital Edition: A move to the Series X performance tier, but still digital-only. It is not an answer for a physical-disc collection.
- Standard 1TB Series X to 2TB Galaxy Black: Primarily more built-in storage and a special finish, not a speed upgrade. Compare its price with a standard Series X plus expansion storage.
- Xbox One to Series X|S: A move to the current-generation platform, with faster SSD-based loading and compatibility for supported games. Check individual game compatibility and features.
What do the 2024 prices mean in 2026?
The June 2024 U.S. ERPs are historical launch-announcement figures, not current prices. Microsoft said U.S. console prices would rise effective August 1, 2026: by $100 for 512GB models and $150 for 1TB models, and it said it would sunset the 2TB model. Its June 2026 price update does not give a complete current U.S. model-by-model price table, so check the Microsoft Store Xbox console listings for live prices and stock rather than calculating a current price from an old ERP. The 2TB model may be found only as remaining inventory or through resale; check whether a listing is new, refurbished or used and review its seller and condition.
For budget buyers, Microsoft said certified refurbished consoles may be available for up to $100 below MSRP; that is not a guaranteed discount on every model or listing. Check the specific listing for model, condition, warranty and availability in the Microsoft Store catalog.
