In clock-speed terms, roughly yes—but not as a guaranteed 10% boost in games. The standard PS5’s Zen 2 CPU runs at up to 3.5 GHz. A reported PS5 Pro High CPU Frequency Mode raises it to about 3.85 GHz, a 10% increase in maximum frequency. Both consoles are listed with an eight-core, 16-thread Zen 2 CPU; the Pro’s figure describes a higher clock, not a new CPU generation. Actual game gains depend on what limits each title.
How the 10% figure is calculated
| Console and setting | CPU architecture | Cores / threads | Frequency |
|---|---|---|---|
| Standard PS5 | AMD Zen 2 | 8 / 16 | Variable, up to 3.5 GHz |
| PS5 Pro, standard mode | AMD Zen 2 family | 8 / 16 | A fixed frequency is not stated in the cited sources |
| PS5 Pro, High CPU Frequency Mode | AMD Zen 2 family | 8 / 16 | Approximately 3.85 GHz, as reported by Insider Gaming |
Sony’s PS5 specifications give the standard console a variable CPU frequency of up to 3.5 GHz. Sony’s PS5 Pro documentation identifies an eight-core, 16-thread AMD Ryzen Zen 2 CPU. The approximately 3.85-GHz High CPU Frequency Mode figure comes from Insider Gaming’s reported specifications, rather than the cited official specification documents.

The comparison is 3.85 ÷ 3.5 − 1 = 0.10: a 0.35-GHz, or 10%, increase over the standard PS5’s maximum listed frequency. That is a theoretical clock-speed uplift, not a measured result showing 10% more work in every game. The reported maximum should not be read as a constant speed in every workload.
Is the PS5 Pro’s CPU a different generation?
Not according to Sony’s published specifications. Both consoles use the Zen 2 architecture and have eight cores and 16 threads. The Pro’s reported CPU advantage is higher frequency in a particular mode, not a move to Zen 3 or Zen 4. Published specifications establish the architecture and core count; they do not establish that every internal component is identical.
#1 Best Overall
- Ray Tracing - Immerse yourself in worlds with a new level of realism as rays of light are individually simulated, creating true-to-life shadows and reflections in supported PS5 games.
- Faster Loading - Fast-travel across the map and get back into the game almost instantly with the PlayStation 5 console’s ultra-high-speed SSD and fast load times.
- Stunning Visuals - Experience the vast world in stunning 4K and HDR at 120 FPS (with a 4K and HDR compatible TV or display)
- Breathtaking Immersion - Discover a deeper gaming experience with support for haptic feedback, adaptive triggers, and 3D Audio technology.
- Backwards Compatibility - Play over 4,000 PS4 games on PS5. Enjoy faster and smoother frame rates in some of the PS4 console's greatest games.
“Base PS5” here means the standard PS5 family, including later standard models, rather than only the 2020 launch console. The relevant CPU comparison is the standard PS5 specification against the Pro.
What High CPU Frequency Mode changes—and what it costs
In the reported High CPU Frequency Mode, the Pro can raise CPU frequency to approximately 3.85 GHz by allocating more system power to the CPU. The same report says this reduces GPU performance by about 1.5%. Treat those figures as reported mode details, not as a universal gain across the console: shifting power toward one processor changes the balance rather than adding free performance everywhere.
The cited sources do not establish a current consumer-facing menu path or a clear official step-by-step procedure for enabling this mode, so a specific Settings route should not be assumed.

Why 10% more CPU frequency does not mean 10% more frames
A game’s frame rate depends on the slowest part of its rendering and simulation workload, as well as its frame-rate cap and software design. Higher CPU frequency can help when the CPU is holding a game back, but it cannot remove a bottleneck elsewhere.
- CPU-limited game: A higher clock may help with simulation, AI, preparing draw calls, streaming, or frame-time consistency. The result still depends on the game engine and other bottlenecks; it need not match the clock increase.
- GPU-limited game: A CPU uplift may make little visible difference if graphics processing is the constraint. This matters especially when a mode targets higher resolution or more demanding visual effects.
- Frame-rate cap: A game locked to 30 or 60 fps will not automatically display a higher frame rate just because spare CPU headroom exists. It may instead have more headroom or steadier frame times.
- Developer support and patches: Pro behavior varies by title. Sony says Pro enhancements apply to selected games and vary by game; hardware alone does not guarantee a specific improvement.
These are performance-scaling considerations, not promised game benchmarks. To establish an actual gain for a title would require controlled, title-by-title testing with comparable settings, patches, frame caps, and modes.
The CPU is not the PS5 Pro’s main upgrade
Sony positions the Pro primarily around graphics and image quality. In its PS5 Pro announcement, Sony claims 67% more GPU compute units than the current PS5, 28% faster memory, and up to 45% faster gameplay rendering. Sony also says ray-tracing performance can reach roughly two to three times the current PS5’s rates, depending on workload, and highlights PSSR, its AI-assisted image reconstruction technology. These are Sony’s stated comparisons, not guarantees for every game.
Rank #2
- Model Number CFI-2000
- Includes DualSense Wireless Controller, 1TB SSD, 2 Horizontal Stand Feet, HDMI Cable, AC power cord, USB cable, printed materials, ASTRO’s PLAYROOM (Pre-installed game)
- Vertical Stand sold seperately
The console includes a 2 TB SSD and is sold without a disc drive; Sony says a separately purchased PS5 Disc Drive is supported. The overall picture is a substantially stronger graphics platform paired with a modest CPU frequency uplift, not a balanced replacement with a new CPU generation.
Which games and players are most likely to benefit?
The Pro is most relevant when a game’s patch uses its graphics capabilities or when the player wants a higher-quality presentation without giving up a higher frame-rate target. Sony says enhancements vary by supported title, so check the specific games you play rather than assuming every PS5 title receives the same treatment.
- Look first at games with Pro-enhanced modes combining improved visual quality with a 60-fps target, and at demanding ray-tracing or rendering features.
- Expect the GPU, memory, and image-reconstruction improvements to matter most in graphics-heavy scenarios; CPU frequency alone is not a reason to expect a fixed frame-rate gain.
- CPU-focused players should look for evidence that a particular game is CPU-limited and that its developer or system mode can use the additional headroom.
- A high-refresh 4K display can make some Pro presentation options more useful, but visible value also depends on the game, viewing distance, and chosen mode.
Is the PS5 Pro worth buying for its CPU?
Not if a major CPU-generation jump is your main goal. The reported 10% figure is a clock-speed increase over the standard PS5’s maximum, on the same Zen 2 architecture and core count. It is neither a guarantee of 10% more frames nor the Pro’s central selling point.
The price difference also makes the reason for upgrading important. As of August 18, 2026, Sony’s U.S. recommended prices are $899.99 for PS5 Pro and $649.99 for the standard PS5, a $250 difference before retailer pricing or promotions. Those prices became effective April 2, 2026, and may differ outside the U.S. or at retail; see Sony’s price announcement. Buyers who need physical media must also account for the separately purchased disc drive; a current drive price is not established by the cited sources.
The Pro is easier to justify for its enhanced graphics, ray tracing, PSSR, and supported-game modes than for its CPU. The standard PS5 keeps the same CPU family at a lower U.S. recommended price. Sony announced the Pro’s launch for November 7, 2024, in its launch-day guide; availability, retail pricing, and title support remain separate considerations.
