Steam ended official support for Windows 7, Windows 8, and Windows 8.1 on January 1, 2024. That did not automatically delete games, close accounts, or stop every installation that day. However, Valve no longer guarantees that the Steam client will work, receive updates or security fixes, or provide technical support on those systems. In August 2026, Windows 11 is the normal supported Windows destination; Windows 10 is only a short-term security bridge for eligible enrolled devices.
What Steam changed on January 1, 2024
Valve’s policy covered Windows 7, Windows 8, and Windows 8.1—not just the two versions usually mentioned in headlines. The cutoff ended official Steam client support, client updates, security updates, and technical assistance for operating-system-related problems. Valve also stopped guaranteeing that Steam would continue functioning on those versions of Windows. See Valve’s notice at Steam Support.
The change did not itself close Steam accounts, revoke purchase records, remove installed games, or erase local save files. It changed the level of support around the operating system running Steam.
Why Valve ended support
Valve said newer Steam client versions require Windows features and security components that are available in newer Microsoft releases but not reliably present on the unsupported systems. Microsoft ended security support for Windows 7 on January 14, 2020, and Windows 8.1 on January 10, 2023. An internet-connected PC running either system therefore no longer receives normal security patches. Microsoft lists those dates and Windows 10’s later cutoff on its Windows end-of-support page.

This was a compatibility and security decision, not a statement that every Windows 7 or 8 computer would be blocked instantly.
Does Steam still work on Windows 7, 8, or 8.1?
Possibly, but it is unsupported and can fail without warning. Valve’s wording allowed that existing clients and games might continue working for some time, while making clear that continued operation was not guaranteed.
A client can appear normal until a dependency changes. A later client update, certificate change, login requirement, application-programming-interface change, or game update can break one feature or the entire installation. Partial failures can include:

- Steam login or account authentication
- Friends, chat, and the Steam Overlay
- Steam Cloud synchronization
- Workshop downloads and game updates
- Achievements and multiplayer authentication
- Third-party launchers or anti-cheat components
An installed single-player game may still launch, especially if it is DRM-free or does not need a current Steam connection. That is not evidence that support has returned.
Are your games, purchases, and saves gone?
Your account and access are different things
Steam purchase records and account entitlements are separate from the ability of an old client to authenticate and deliver a game. Valve did not announce that purchases were deleted. Technical access can nevertheless depend on Steam login, digital-rights management, a launcher, online services, or a current game build.
What may happen to installed games
- DRM-free or older offline games may continue to run locally.
- Games requiring Steam authentication may stop launching if the client cannot log in.
- Online games can fail when servers, anti-cheat systems, launchers, or updated builds require newer software.
- A game that worked previously may become incompatible after an update.
- Reinstalling later may be difficult if the old client can no longer download or authenticate correctly.
Back up saves before changing anything
Do not rely exclusively on Steam Cloud. Copy each important game’s local save folder, configuration files, screenshots, and mods to an external drive or another trusted location. Cloud synchronization can fail when an outdated client cannot connect, and a clean operating-system installation can overwrite the system drive.

What to do first
- Back up personal data and saves. Include desktop documents, browser data, game saves, configuration files, and mod folders.
- Secure the Steam account. Confirm the recovery email, use Steam Guard where available, and never enter credentials into an unofficial “old Steam client” download.
- Inventory the library. Mark games that require persistent online access, third-party launchers, anti-cheat, VR, or Steam authentication. Identify DRM-free versions or alternative storefronts where relevant.
- Check Windows 11 eligibility. Verify a 64-bit processor, supported CPU generation, TPM 2.0, Secure Boot capability, adequate memory and storage, firmware support, and drivers using Microsoft’s current requirements and compatibility tools.
- Test critical games and saves. Confirm that essential titles launch and that local saves open before experimenting with an operating-system change.
- Choose a supported replacement path. Upgrade, replace the computer, install maintained Linux, use an offline legacy setup, or stream games from a newer device.
Windows 11 or Windows 10?
Windows 11 is the normal destination
For a compatible computer, Windows 11 provides the least disruptive supported Steam experience, current drivers, security maintenance, and the best prospects for new games and multiplayer. Microsoft says eligible Windows 10 PCs can upgrade to Windows 11 for free, but readers coming from Windows 7 or Windows 8.1 should not assume a free direct upgrade. A compatible older machine may require a purchased license and a fresh installation. Microsoft’s guidance is at microsoft.com/windows/end-of-support.
A clean installation can remove applications and require files, settings, and games to be restored. Make a full backup first. Do not treat bypassing Windows 11 hardware checks as the default fix: unsupported installations can have update, driver, security, and performance problems.
Windows 10 is not a fully supported fallback in 2026
Microsoft’s ordinary Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025. Eligible consumer Windows 10 22H2 devices can enroll in Extended Security Updates through October 12, 2027, subject to regional and enrollment conditions. Microsoft lists options that can include no additional cost under an account-sync arrangement, Microsoft Rewards points, or a $30 one-time purchase where applicable. ESU supplies security updates only; it does not restore full feature support or make Windows 10 equivalent to a current release. Treat it as a temporary bridge, not the preferred endpoint.

If the old PC cannot run Windows 11

Linux and Steam Play
Steam has an official Linux client, and Steam Play with Proton can run some Windows games. Valve explicitly presents this as potential compatibility, not a guarantee; check each title’s current status before committing. Anti-cheat, launchers, VR, Game Pass-linked games, and proprietary middleware are common trouble spots. Valve also stopped supporting Linux distributions with glibc older than 2.31 on August 15, 2025, so use a currently maintained distribution rather than an obsolete release. Steam Deck and SteamOS hardware
A Steam Deck replaces the old computer; it does not upgrade its Windows installation. It offers a Steam-centered interface and Proton compatibility, but Windows-only applications, VR, specialized peripherals, and some multiplayer games may not work natively. Offline legacy use
An old PC can be preserved for retro or archival gaming if it stays disconnected from the internet whenever possible. Do not use it for banking, email, password management, or other sensitive accounts. This is risk management, not a supported Steam configuration.

Platform requirements can differ from game requirements
A game’s store page can still list an old Windows version even though the Steam client itself requires a newer platform. For example, a listing such as Dota 2 may carry a Steam-client Windows 10 note alongside its game requirements. Other current listings, including No Man’s Sky and Hollow Knight, demonstrate that individual games can require Windows 10/11 or a particular Windows 10 build. Always check both the platform policy and the title’s current system-requirements page.
What not to do
- Do not assume continued launching means the system is supported.
- Do not install a random archived Steam executable, modified client, crack, or authentication bypass.
- Do not leave an unpatched Windows 7 or 8 machine handling sensitive accounts.
- Do not begin a Windows 11 clean installation without a verified backup.
- Do not assume Proton works for every game or that a Windows 10 ESU enrollment restores full support.
Choosing the sensible path
Choose Windows 11 if the current PC passes Microsoft’s requirements and you need dependable multiplayer, current drivers, or everyday internet use. Replace the computer when it lacks TPM 2.0, Secure Boot, a supported processor, or modern graphics and storage, or when upgrade costs approach replacement value. Choose Linux when the hardware remains useful and your library is Proton-friendly. Choose offline use only for isolated legacy gaming. Choose cloud gaming when your broadband is stable and the required titles are available through the chosen service.
