Android has a small number of games that let multiple people play on one device at once. This list separates those from turn-taking games and nearby multiplayer that needs a separate phone or tablet for each player. For two people, a tablet is usually more comfortable than a phone; for a group, Android TV and controllers can make a big difference.

True same-device games
1. BADLAND — best overall for one-device co-op
Mode: simultaneous multiplayer on one device. Google Play explicitly describes local play for up to four players on the same device and a co-op mode for up to four. The listing also says it supports game controllers, phones, tablets, and Android TV: BADLAND on Google Play.
BADLAND is the clearest pick when the requirement is genuinely “one Android device, several people playing now.” Its side-scrolling platforming supports both cooperation and competition, so it suits friends who want to get through a level together as well as groups happy to turn the same screen into a scramble. Use a tablet or TV for four players; a phone is more practical for fewer people.
Setup: Install the game, choose its multiplayer option, then use touch controls or compatible controllers. The listing showed an update dated January 26, 2026; individual device compatibility can still vary.

2. BombSquad — best party game for a group
Mode: local play on one device or over a network. Google Play advertises local/networked multiplayer for up to eight players, touchscreen controls, multiple controller types, and an option to use phones or tablets as controllers through the BombSquad Remote app. It also names Android TV support: BombSquad on Google Play.
BombSquad is a collection of fast party mini-games, with both team and versus play. Eight players crowding around a phone is not a sensible setup: use a TV or large display, with gamepads or individual phones running the remote app. The listing says the game contains ads and in-app purchases. It showed an update dated May 4, 2026.
Setup: For Android TV, connect compatible gamepads or install BombSquad Remote on players’ phones. For a local-network session, make sure the devices can see one another on the network. A phone used as a remote is a controller, not an additional copy of the game screen.

Mode: same-device split-screen racing is identified in Android Authority’s local-multiplayer roundup, which describes it as a leading Android racing option: Android Authority’s Android local-multiplayer guide. That coverage cites up to four players, but does not establish compatibility for every current Android device.

Choose it for racing rather than assuming any local-multiplayer label means one-screen play. Split-screen is most practical on a tablet, Android TV, or external display with controllers. Before buying or setting aside a group session, check the current Play listing and the game’s multiplayer menu on the specific device you plan to use.
4. 2 Player games: the Challenge — easiest for two people to start
Mode: two players share one touchscreen in a collection of short games. It is designed for quick, direct competition rather than a campaign. One phone is enough, though a tablet gives each player more room.

Mode: same-device multiplayer is a candidate feature, but the current player cap and menu details are not established here. Check the Android listing and in-game multiplayer menu before relying on it for a group. Its quick, accessible style makes it a natural fit for casual play, especially with children, but do not assume a player count based on another platform or an older version.

6. Drive Ahead! — quick vehicle duels
Mode: same-device shared-screen play is a candidate, usually described for two players; verify that the current Android edition still exposes local multiplayer. Its compact vehicle battles are suited to short competitive rounds. Check whether ads or unlocks interrupt local play before choosing it for an uninterrupted session.
7. Glow Hockey 2 — simplest two-player match
Mode: two players on one touchscreen. Air hockey needs little explanation, making it a low-friction choice for a quick match on a phone or tablet. Confirm current Play availability and local mode before downloading; current controller support and monetization details are not established here.

8. Sea Battle 2 — best pass-and-play pick
Mode: turn-based play on one device, not simultaneous split-screen action. It fits players who want the familiar tabletop rhythm of taking turns and passing the phone or tablet back and forth. Choose it when sharing one screen matters more than real-time controls.
Local multiplayer that needs more than one device
9. Spaceteam — cooperative chaos across phones
Mode: nearby multiplayer across devices, not one-device split screen. Players normally need one phone or tablet each and must coordinate during play. The cited description gives a two-to-eight-player range: Spaceteam overview. It is a strong choice when everyone has a device and wants a cooperative party game, but it does not meet the one-phone requirement.

10. Minecraft: Bedrock Edition — long-term building with friends
Mode: cross-device multiplayer, not Android same-device split screen as established by the current Google Play description. The listing describes online play for up to four players with a free Xbox account and Realms hosting for up to ten friends. 11. Terraria — deep co-op if everyone has a device
Mode: local Wi-Fi or online multiplayer across devices, not verified one-device split screen. Google Play says players can join up to seven friends and lists Bluetooth gamepad support with remappable buttons. Pick the right setup before downloading
Choose the screen around the game
- Phone: fine for two-person mini-games and simple shared controls, but often cramped for independent controls or more players.
- Tablet: the best single-device compromise for BADLAND, 2 Player games, and touchscreen play. A larger screen improves visibility but does not guarantee comfort at a game’s maximum player count.
- Android TV: better for BombSquad and controller-based play where the game supports TV. Check the particular game and device before assuming availability.
- External display: HDMI output only works if the Android phone or tablet supports wired video output. An adapter alone cannot add that capability or turn a game into split-screen multiplayer.
- Multiple devices: the practical route for Spaceteam, Minecraft, and Terraria; it means each player needs a compatible device, and sometimes a network, account, or game copy.
Touch or controllers?
Touch is enough for simple shared-screen titles, but racing, platforming, and Android TV play are usually more comfortable with controllers. Support for controllers does not automatically mean a game supports two controllers at once. Confirm simultaneous controller support on the target device, especially for mixed touch-and-controller setups. Android controller behavior can vary by game, device maker, and OS version.
Check the price and connection details
Free-to-download games may include ads, in-app purchases, or unlocks. Paid games can still require extra devices or hardware for the multiplayer mode you want. Google Play prices and Play Pass availability are regional and change over time. The specific retrieved U.S. price signals above are dated August 16, 2026, not guaranteed current prices.
Troubleshoot local multiplayer across devices
These checks apply to local-network games, not one-device modes. A game advertising local multiplayer may still require each player to use a separate device, and local Wi-Fi should not be assumed to work without internet unless the game’s current documentation says so.
