Google Stadia shut down globally on January 18, 2023. There is no one-for-one replacement for its combination of a simple storefront, cloud hardware, controller integration and quick, cross-device startup. The best alternative depends on what you want to preserve: streaming games you already own, an included subscription catalog, PlayStation access, or a complete Windows PC in the cloud.
For most former Stadia users with PC-game purchases, NVIDIA GeForce NOW is the closest practical fit. Xbox Cloud Gaming is better if you want a large included catalog, while Shadow PC offers the most control. Amazon Luna remains relevant mainly as a search result; its 2026 changes make it a poor default recommendation.

What happened to Google Stadia?
Google announced that Stadia’s consumer service would be wound down, with access ending on January 18, 2023. Stadia is discontinued globally, not merely unavailable in selected countries. (Google’s announcement)
That means “Stadia alternative” now describes a replacement for the use case: playing without a powerful local gaming PC, using ordinary screens and controllers, avoiding downloads, and moving between devices. No current service reproduces Stadia’s exact store and ownership model.

Which Stadia feature are you trying to replace?
Streaming PC games you already own
Start with GeForce NOW. It connects supported Steam, Epic Games Store, GOG, PC Game Pass and Ubisoft Connect libraries, but only for games NVIDIA supports. A game being available on Steam does not make it automatically streamable. (NVIDIA setup guide)
Getting games included with one subscription
Choose Xbox Cloud Gaming through Game Pass Ultimate, PlayStation Plus Premium or Blacknut. These services provide catalogs rather than unrestricted access to your existing PC purchases.
Using mods, launchers or desktop software
Choose Shadow PC. It supplies a remote Windows environment, so you install launchers and games yourself. That flexibility also means you handle updates, storage and troubleshooting.
Playing mainly PlayStation titles
PlayStation Plus Premium is the relevant Sony tier. Streaming still depends on the particular game, account, device and country; Essential and Extra should not be treated as equivalent cloud-streaming plans.
1. NVIDIA GeForce NOW — best overall for PC-game owners
GeForce NOW is the closest mainstream match for Stadia’s “use inexpensive hardware” convenience when you are willing to own games through PC storefronts. NVIDIA says it supports Macs, TVs, phones, tablets and other devices, and advertises more than 4,500 PC games. That number is a catalog claim, not a promise that every title is available to every member or region. (service overview; game list)

- Free: ad-supported streaming, advertised up to 1080p/60fps.
- Performance: $9.99 monthly or $99.99 annually.
- Ultimate: $19.99 monthly or $199.99 annually.

Higher resolution and frame-rate features require the appropriate membership, compatible display and hardware, supported game, and sufficient network capacity. NVIDIA recommends less than 80 ms latency to its data center, wired Ethernet or 5 GHz Wi-Fi, and lists 65 Mbps for demanding 5K/120fps scenarios. (system requirements)

- You already own games on supported PC stores.
- You use a Mac, Chromebook, TV or low-end PC.
- You value image quality and broad device support.
Avoid it if
- You expect every Steam game to work.
- You do not want to purchase games separately.
- Your route to NVIDIA’s data centers has high latency or packet loss.
2. Xbox Cloud Gaming — best included library
Xbox Cloud Gaming is included with Game Pass Ultimate and is the strongest choice when the subscription catalog matters more than owning individual PC-store purchases. Microsoft’s April 21, 2026 update lists the U.S. Ultimate price as $22.99 per month; regional prices may differ. (Microsoft’s update)
Ultimate combines cloud access with a large rotating Xbox and PC catalog, online console multiplayer and other plan benefits. Cloud streaming is not identical to downloading: not every Game Pass title is cloud-enabled, and licenses and availability change.
Microsoft also said future Call of Duty releases will no longer arrive in Game Pass at launch, although existing Call of Duty titles remain available under the stated policy. Do not interpret “Game Pass includes day-one games” as a guarantee for every major release.
Best fit
Choose Xbox Cloud Gaming for variety, family sharing of a catalog and Xbox ecosystem integration. It is a poor match for someone with hundreds of Steam purchases who wants to stream those exact licenses.

3. PlayStation Plus Premium — best for PlayStation players
PlayStation Plus Premium is the natural cloud option for people already invested in Sony’s ecosystem. It combines a PlayStation-oriented catalog with streaming where supported, but Sony limits availability by country, title, account and device. Check whether a particular game is streamable rather than merely downloadable or unavailable. (PlayStation Plus support)

Premium is the relevant tier for cloud streaming; Essential and Extra are not interchangeable substitutes. This is not a universal Stadia replacement for PC-first users because it does not provide access to Steam or Epic libraries.
4. Boosteroid — best supplement when GeForce NOW lacks a game
Boosteroid is a title-by-title PC cloud-streaming alternative. Its main value is the possibility that a desired game is supported there when it is absent from GeForce NOW. Treat it as a second provider to check, not as an unrestricted Steam service.
- Confirm the exact game, edition, store and country on Boosteroid’s official site.
- Check data-center proximity before paying; distance can dominate responsiveness.
- Verify controller, keyboard-and-mouse, DLC, multiplayer and save behavior for the specific title.
- Try a short-term option before an annual commitment.
5. Shadow PC — best full Windows PC in the cloud
Shadow gives you a remote Windows computer rather than a curated game catalog. You install Steam, Epic, launchers, mods and desktop applications yourself, making it the most flexible option in this list.

That control adds work and cost. You manage installations, updates, storage and troubleshooting, and anti-cheat, DRM, publisher rules, virtualized hardware or regional availability can still prevent a game from running. Shadow is therefore not a promise that every title works. See the current plans at Shadow’s official site.
Choose it for
- Mods and unusual launcher requirements.
- A Windows desktop as well as gaming.
- Games unavailable on managed streaming services.
6. Blacknut — best simple family catalog
Blacknut is a curated subscription service aimed at straightforward access rather than PC-library ownership. It can suit children, families and casual players who prefer one catalog over linking multiple storefront accounts.
It is not a replacement for a Steam, Epic or Stadia purchase library, and its major-release coverage may be narrower than Game Pass. Confirm the current catalog, parental controls, supported devices, country availability and price at Blacknut’s official site before subscribing.

7. Amazon Luna — conditional recommendation only
Older comparisons often call Luna Stadia’s closest rival, but that advice is outdated. Amazon says that beginning April 10, 2026, Luna stopped offering game stores, individual game purchases and third-party subscriptions. Amazon also said affected save data could be downloaded for 90 days after June 10, 2026, while warning that compatibility with other services was not guaranteed. (Amazon support notice)

How to choose without wasting money
1. Verify the game model
For GeForce NOW, Boosteroid and Shadow, establish whether you must own the game and through which store. For Xbox, PlayStation and Blacknut, confirm that the title is included and cloud-enabled. Cloud access is a service license, not a transfer of ownership.
2. Check the exact title and edition
- Search the provider’s live catalog.
- Confirm platform, edition and country.
- Check DLC, mods, multiplayer and cross-save support.
- Do not assume a competitor’s support means this provider supports it.
3. Test your network at real play times
Latency, jitter, packet loss, Wi-Fi congestion and server distance matter more than headline download speed. Test during evening and weekend use. A wired connection or 5 GHz Wi-Fi is preferable where possible.
4. Test your complete setup
Use the intended browser or app, controller, display and audio device. Features such as HDR, keyboard-and-mouse input, high refresh rates and 4K/5K output can differ by device.
5. Start short-term
Use a free tier, trial or day pass where available. Confirm queues, session limits, save synchronization and cancellation terms before choosing annual billing.
Common failure modes
- Unsupported game: Check another provider, or use local hardware. Shadow may help only if the game’s anti-cheat and publisher policies allow cloud-PC play.
- Owned game not included: GeForce NOW and Boosteroid generally still require a separate purchase through a supported store.
- Saves do not transfer: Cross-save is game-specific. Matching titles across services does not guarantee progression transfer.
- Controller behaves differently: Browser and native apps can handle input differently; test the exact controller and device.
- Competitive play feels delayed: Shooters, rhythm games, fighters and high-level racing expose streaming latency more than turn-based, strategy or casual games.
- Queues appear: Free and lower-cost tiers may prioritize paid users. Premium plans can reduce queues but cannot fix regional capacity or poor routing.
- Country restrictions: Prices, catalogs, servers and device support are regional. U.S. figures do not establish availability elsewhere.
When cloud gaming is the wrong answer
A used console, modest gaming PC, handheld PC, local PC upgrade or Remote Play from hardware you already own may provide steadier latency and permanent local access. Cloud gaming removes the need for a powerful local gaming machine, not the need for a compatible screen, controller in many cases and reliable internet.
