The best Apple Arcade controller depends on where you play. The Xbox Wireless Controller is the most versatile conventional pick for Apple TV, iPad, and Mac; the Backbone One (2nd Gen) is a better fit if you want an iPhone handheld; and the Razer Kishi V3 Pro XL is aimed at large-iPad play. You do not need a controller labeled MFi: Apple supports compatible Xbox, PlayStation, and other Bluetooth controllers. Before buying, check your device’s connector and look for the controller icon on the game’s App Store page—support varies by game.

Apple says compatible wireless Xbox, PlayStation, and other Bluetooth controllers can be used with iPhone, iPad, Apple TV, Mac, and Apple Vision Pro. That does not mean every controller works identically on every device, or that every Apple Arcade game accepts a gamepad. Apple’s controller compatibility guidance is the best starting point.

1. Xbox Wireless Controller — best overall for Apple TV, iPad, and Mac
A conventional Xbox controller is a practical first choice if you mainly play on a television, tablet, or computer. Its familiar full-size layout suits platformers, racers, action games, sports games, and twin-stick games, and it can be used across Apple devices through Bluetooth when the model is compatible. It is also an easy format to add for another player in an Apple TV household.

Apple lists compatible Xbox controllers in its Bluetooth controller support guidance. The specific controller generation and its pairing instructions still matter.
2. Sony DualSense Wireless Controller — best premium conventional option
If you already own a PS5, try its DualSense with your Apple device before buying another controller. Its full-size design is suited to couch play and a large iPad or Mac screen; it is less convenient to carry than a phone-mounted controller.
- Choose it if: you value a familiar PlayStation layout or already have one.
- Skip it if: travel size is the priority or you need a phone mount.
- Know before buying: some PlayStation-specific features do not carry over fully to Apple Arcade. Do not assume its battery life or feature support is superior on Apple devices.

3. Backbone One (2nd Gen) — best compact iPhone controller
The Backbone One attaches to a compatible iPhone to make a handheld-style setup. Backbone sells separate Lightning and USB-C versions; the connector is not a minor detail, so match the controller to your phone and check the fit of your case and camera area. Backbone’s pages showed a $99.99 price for each second-generation edition when the listings were crawled in 2026; treat that as a dated price signal, not a guaranteed current price.
- Choose it if: you want a compact, direct-connection iPhone setup.
- Skip it if: you mainly play on Apple TV, need a controller for a large tablet, or want one gamepad for multiple people.
- Know before buying: the listed Lightning model includes a 3.5 mm headset jack. Backbone says the second generation revises phone fit and the D-pad. Its app can offer additional features, but Apple Arcade gameplay does not inherently require the app.

4. Backbone Pro — best premium Backbone option for multiple screens
Backbone Pro is positioned as a more substantial option for people who want to move between handheld and larger-screen gaming. Apple’s listing describes use with iPhone, iPad mini, MacBook, Apple TV, Apple Vision Pro, and other screens. That broad positioning makes it a different proposition from the compact Backbone One, but it is not proof that every feature works identically over every connection or on every platform.
- Choose it if: you want a premium Backbone controller and expect to play on more than an iPhone.
- Skip it if: you mostly play casual games and simply need a basic Bluetooth pad.
- Know before buying: verify the model’s connector and supported device dimensions. The available listing does not establish a reliable current price.

The G8+ MFi is worth considering if compact phone controllers feel cramped and you prefer a larger, more traditional grip. Its Bluetooth design differs from a controller that relies only on a phone port, but do not assume that behavior or compatibility carries over to every Apple device or similarly named GameSir product.
- Choose it if: you value grip size and want a phone-mounted format.
- Skip it if: portability, Apple TV play, or minimal model checking matters more.
- Know before buying: check that the listing is specifically for the MFi edition, then confirm phone dimensions, case clearance, connector placement, and supported platforms. A price around $79.99 reported for the G8 Galileo family is not a verified price for this exact model.

6. Razer Kishi V3 Pro XL — best for a large iPad
The Kishi V3 Pro XL is aimed at tablet-sized handheld gaming. A split controller grips a compatible iPad rather than asking you to hold a full-size gamepad separately, which may suit long sessions on a large screen. It is a specialist choice rather than a universal Apple controller.

7. SteelSeries Nimbus Cloud — Apple-oriented, but approach Mac use cautiously
The Nimbus Cloud is a conventional Bluetooth gamepad from a line with longstanding Apple positioning. SteelSeries lists compatibility across Apple devices and other platforms, making its living-room shape more suitable for Apple TV than a phone-mounted controller.
- Choose it if: you specifically want an Apple-oriented traditional gamepad and your main use is iPhone, iPad, or Apple TV.
- Skip it if: reliable Mac mapping is essential and you cannot verify current behavior for your setup.
- Know before buying: a TechRadar review reported inverted sticks, incorrect mappings, and poor Steam behavior on Mac, as well as no official companion app. Check current availability and support rather than assuming older Nimbus or Nimbus+ listings remain suitable.

8. 8BitDo Pro 3 — best compact conventional multi-platform pad
The Pro 3 is a compact conventional controller for people who move between Apple devices and other platforms. Its manual lists Apple operating-system requirements for iOS 26, iPadOS 26, tvOS 26, macOS 26, and visionOS 26, and describes USB-C wired operation for macOS and USB-C iOS/iPadOS devices. Follow the manual for the right mode and connection instead of generalizing from another 8BitDo model.
- Choose it if: you want a portable gamepad to share across platforms.
- Skip it if: you want a phone-mounted design or expect Xbox/PlayStation button labeling.
- Know before buying: a compact controller can have smaller grips than a full-size Xbox or DualSense, and button layout conventions may differ.

9. Nintendo Switch Pro Controller — best for existing Switch owners
If you already own a Switch Pro Controller, reusing it is a reasonable way to play compatible Apple Arcade games on Apple TV or iPad. Apple’s guidance covers compatible Bluetooth game controllers; pairing and support can still depend on controller generation, firmware, and the Apple operating system.
- Choose it if: it is already in your home and you want to avoid buying another conventional controller.
- Skip it if: you are purchasing a dedicated Apple Arcade controller from scratch and another option better matches your devices.
- Know before buying or pairing: put it into Bluetooth discovery mode and disconnect it from the Switch if needed. Nintendo button labels can conflict with Xbox- or PlayStation-style prompts displayed by a game.

10. GameSir X5 Lite — a budget candidate only after exact-model checks
The X5 Lite appears in mobile-controller comparisons, but the available product information does not establish enough official detail to recommend it unconditionally for Apple Arcade. Treat it as a candidate to investigate, not as a verified universal pick.
- Consider it if: you find a current official listing that explicitly confirms Apple compatibility for the exact edition and your device.
- Skip it if: the listing leaves its iPhone connector, supported iOS version, case clearance, or Apple-platform behavior unclear.
- Before buying: confirm those details on the live vendor page. Do not infer MFi certification from a general statement that a controller works with iOS.

Start with the screen and form factor
- iPhone only: choose a phone-mounted controller such as the correct Backbone One edition or the G8+ MFi if its fit suits your phone.
- Large iPad: consider the Kishi V3 Pro XL only after checking the exact tablet, or use a conventional Xbox or DualSense controller separately.
- Apple TV: a conventional Bluetooth gamepad is usually a better fit than a phone-mounted model.
- Mac and Apple TV: begin with a compatible Xbox controller or DualSense you already own; treat Nimbus Cloud Mac compatibility cautiously.
- Family multiplayer: conventional Bluetooth controllers are easier to share. Apple TV 4K and Apple TV HD support up to four Bluetooth controllers simultaneously, or one controller when Apple TV is also using a Bluetooth audio accessory.
- Already own a console controller: try it first. A dedicated MFi-labeled accessory may add little if your existing controller suits your devices.
Check the connector before buying a phone-mounted controller
iPhone 15-series and later use USB-C, while older iPhones may use Lightning. Backbone sells separate Lightning and USB-C versions, so verify the exact phone and edition rather than relying on the product family name alone. Cases, camera bumps, MagSafe accessories, and port placement can affect fit; adapters do not necessarily make a controller designed for one connector a practical match for another phone.

Choose Bluetooth or wired for how you play
Bluetooth is the straightforward choice for couch play on Apple TV, Mac, or iPad, and for conventional controllers shared across devices. A wired connection avoids the Bluetooth pairing step and may be preferable for some cloud or remote-play setups, but no latency advantage is guaranteed without controlled testing.
Backbone describes a wired “Play on Any Screen” setup for iPad, Mac, PC, and other devices; its instructions specify an MFi-certified USB cable for iPhone in that configuration. See Backbone’s wired-connection instructions.
Check comfort and features against the games you play
For long sessions, grip size, D-pad feel, stick placement and travel, and trigger shape matter more than a broad “compatible” label. Also check pass-through charging, headset support, remapping, multiple-device pairing, firmware updates, and case clearance where relevant. Rumble, haptics, adaptive triggers, companion apps, and button remapping can vary by operating system and game; an Android feature list does not guarantee the same behavior on iPhone, iPad, Mac, or Apple TV.
Does every Apple Arcade game support a controller?
No. Apple advises checking for the controller icon on a game’s App Store product page. Controller support can also be partial: gameplay may work while menus require touch, some inputs may be unsupported, button prompts may use another layout, and local multiplayer support varies by game. Some Apple TV screens may still call for touch or Siri Remote input. Apple’s guidance is in its App Store controller support feature.
How to pair a Bluetooth controller with an Apple device
- Turn on the controller and put it into Bluetooth pairing or discovery mode using its manufacturer’s instructions.
- On iPhone or iPad, open Settings → Bluetooth, then select the controller when it appears.
- On Mac, open System Settings → Bluetooth, then select the controller.
- On Apple TV, open Settings → Remotes and Devices → Bluetooth, then select the controller.
- Open an Apple Arcade game that supports controllers. If it does not respond, check the game’s App Store page for the controller icon.

What to try if the controller connects but a game does not respond
- Confirm that the specific game supports a controller; pairing the gamepad to the device does not make every game controller-compatible.
- Check that the controller is connected to the intended Apple device, not a nearby phone, Mac, or console.
- Fully close and reopen the game after pairing, and check that the controller has charge.
- Confirm the controller is in the correct platform mode and has current firmware.
- Try touch input on menus: a game may support a controller during play but not throughout its interface.
- If pairing remains unreliable, forget the controller in Bluetooth settings, restart the Apple device and controller, then pair again.
Apple TV pairing recovery
If Apple TV cannot find the controller, put the gamepad back into pairing mode; simply turning it on may not be enough. Disconnect it from a phone, Mac, or console first if it is reconnecting there. If necessary, remove it under Settings → Remotes and Devices → Bluetooth, restart Apple TV, and pair again. The Apple TV controller limit is up to four, reduced to one while a Bluetooth audio accessory is in use, according to Apple’s support guidance.
