ASUS announced the ROG Ally X (2024) on June 2, 2024, with a U.S. launch price of $799.99 and a July 2024 launch window. It is a Windows 11 handheld built around the same AMD Ryzen Z1 Extreme processor as the higher-end original ROG Ally; its main upgrades are a larger battery, more memory and storage, revised controls, and expanded connectivity—not a new performance generation.
When did the ROG Ally X launch, and how much did it cost?
ASUS announced the ROG Ally X on June 2, 2024, and said it would launch in July. The U.S. announcement listed an MSRP of $799.99 for the configuration with 24GB of memory and a 1TB SSD, with preorders through Best Buy. That $799.99 figure is the original U.S. MSRP, not a current-price promise or a worldwide price. ASUS notes that availability and specifications can vary by region. Retail discounts, open-box offers, and later pricing should be checked separately from the launch MSRP.

These are ASUS’s published specifications for the U.S. 1TB model; charger contents, wireless details, and bundled offers can vary by market.

ASUS lists a 65W USB-C adapter and a three-month PC Game Pass offer for eligible markets, subject to regional bundle differences and the offer’s terms. Consult the official specification page for the market-specific details.

The original Ally’s launch price and battery capacity are documented in ASUS’s original launch announcement. These are launch MSRPs, not a comparison of current retailer prices.
The upgrade is about endurance and equipment
The 80Wh battery doubles the original Ally’s rated capacity, but it does not guarantee twice the playtime. Actual runtime depends on the game, power mode, frame-rate cap, brightness, wireless use, and Windows background activity. Demanding games can still drain a handheld battery quickly.

The extra memory is shared by Windows and the integrated GPU; it is not dedicated graphics memory. More capacity and faster memory can provide additional headroom and may help some workloads, but they do not automatically deliver a large frame-rate increase when the CPU and GPU platform are unchanged.
The cost of the larger battery and revised chassis is weight: the Ally X is about 70g heavier than the original Ally, based on ASUS’s listed figures. Its standard M.2 2280 SSD format also differs from the original Ally’s shorter 2230 drive format, giving the X a more common form factor for internal storage upgrades. Check the exact SSD’s dimensions and installation requirements before replacing a drive.
What performance should you expect?
The Ally X uses the same Ryzen Z1 Extreme processor as the higher-end original Ally. ASUS positioned the changes around memory, battery, storage, cooling, controls, and connectivity, rather than a new CPU or GPU generation. Faster memory and additional capacity can help in particular games or settings, but the processor is not a basis for expecting a dramatic across-the-board performance leap.

Results depend on the game, resolution, graphics settings, and selected power limit. The integrated GPU also shares system memory with Windows, so the 24GB pool is not equivalent to a separate graphics card with dedicated VRAM. Buyers focused strictly on higher frame rates should not treat the Ally X as a generational GPU upgrade.

ASUS says the redesigned cooling system uses fans that are 23% smaller, with blades 50% thinner, and moves up to 24% more air. The design adds a third exhaust vent; ASUS also says it can keep the display surface up to 6°C cooler under the company’s stated test conditions. The chassis and controls were revised alongside the cooling system. Those changes, plus the larger battery, target comfort and longer unplugged sessions; the available specifications do not establish a universal improvement in comfort for every hand size or play style.

Because the Ally X runs Windows 11, it can use a broad range of Windows storefronts and software, but it is not a console-style device in the same sense as a dedicated handheld operating system. Windows updates, launchers, controller navigation, and occasional desktop interaction can require setup or troubleshooting. Individual games may also have their own performance, anti-cheat, or control limitations.

The two USB-C ports are not identical: one is USB 3.2 Gen 2 Type-C, while the other is USB 4 Type-C with DisplayPort and power delivery. ASUS lists the USB 4 port as Thunderbolt 4 compliant. That wording does not guarantee every Thunderbolt accessory will work; compatibility can depend on the accessory, drivers, power requirements, and operating system. A dock can connect peripherals or an external display, but check its video-output support and USB Power Delivery rating rather than assuming every USB-C hub is interchangeable.

The change in expansion connectivity matters for owners of ASUS’s XG Mobile ecosystem: the Ally X does not retain the original Ally’s proprietary XG Mobile interface. It instead adds a second USB-C port, including USB 4, for broader USB-C connectivity.
Who should buy the Ally X—and who should look elsewhere?
It makes the most sense for battery-conscious Windows handheld buyers
- First-time handheld PC buyers: Consider it if you want Windows compatibility, 24GB of shared memory, 1TB of internal storage, and a larger battery in one device.
- Players often away from an outlet: The doubled battery capacity over the original Ally is most relevant if longer unplugged sessions are a priority, while actual runtime will still vary by game and settings.
- Existing Ally owners: An upgrade is easier to justify if battery capacity, storage, memory headroom, revised controls, or the second USB-C port addresses a specific limitation. The same processor makes it a weaker choice if the main goal is a major performance jump.
The original Ally may be the better value at a lower street price
The original Z1 Extreme Ally may suit buyers who play near a charger, are satisfied with 16GB of memory and 512GB at launch, prioritize lower weight, or want the XG Mobile connector. Its $699.99 figure was its U.S. launch MSRP; a present-day deal should be compared using the actual retailer price and condition, not that historical figure.
Choose based on software needs when comparing with Steam Deck
The Steam Deck is centered on SteamOS and Valve’s Steam ecosystem, while the Ally X is a Windows handheld better suited to people who want Windows software and multiple PC launchers. A gaming laptop is a different kind of purchase
A laptop is the more natural choice for a larger display, built-in keyboard and trackpad, productivity work, or sustained high-performance use. A handheld is better suited to controller-based play on a couch or while travelling; its integrated graphics and handheld power envelope are not equivalent to a gaming laptop with a discrete GPU. Treat the $799.99 figure as historical U.S. launch pricing, not a current deal quote. The ASUS product page identifies the 2024 model, but current stock and price can change. The Ally X was the more fully equipped version of the original Ally for players who wanted more battery capacity, memory, storage, and connectivity. It was not a new performance generation: whether it is worth choosing over a cheaper Ally depends on how much those refinements matter to the buyer.
