Counter-Strike 2 is free to play on Steam. Valve describes it as a free upgrade to Counter-Strike: Global Offensive. You can play the regular game modes and matchmaking types without paying, but Premier Mode is restricted to accounts with Prime Status and a Steam profile level of 10.
What “free” means in Counter-Strike 2
Steam’s current Counter-Strike 2 listing presents the game as free to play and as a free upgrade to CS:GO. The free download is not a time-limited trial, and ordinary matchmaking does not require a separate purchase.
Steam Support states: “Free Counter-Strike 2 players receive access to all game modes and matchmaking types with the exception of Premier Mode, which requires Prime Status to participate.”
Do you need Prime to play CS2?
No. Prime is not required for basic free access. It matters if you want Premier, Prime matchmaking and the other account benefits Valve associates with Prime.

How Premier access works
Prime Status alone is not enough for Premier: Steam Support’s FAQ also requires Profile Level 10. Prime can be purchased in-game or through the Steam Store. Valve says Prime cannot currently be removed after it is added.
Prime and non-Prime players can enter a pre-made lobby together, but that lobby is treated as non-Prime for matchmaking purposes.

Can you play Counter-Strike 2 without buying anything?
Yes. Install the free game from Steam and use the non-Premier modes and matchmaking types. Prime is an optional digital upgrade rather than a prerequisite for starting the game. If your goal is specifically Premier, plan for both the Prime purchase and the Profile Level 10 requirement.
Can your PC run Counter-Strike 2?
Steam publishes separate minimum specifications for Windows and SteamOS/Linux. These are entry requirements, not a promise of a particular resolution, frame rate or competitive experience.

Official SteamOS/Linux minimum requirements
- Operating system: Ubuntu 20.04
- Processor: CPU with four hardware threads, such as an Intel Core i5 750 or higher
- Memory: 8 GB RAM
- Graphics: AMD GCN or newer, or NVIDIA Kepler or newer, with current Vulkan drivers

The Linux listing’s sound-card recommendation does not mean you need a headset; any suitable audio output can serve that role. Meeting the minimum specifications still does not establish what settings or frame rate your system will achieve.
Can you make content for Counter-Strike 2?
The official Counter-Strike website provides Workshop creation guides for weapons, stickers and maps, including submission to the Steam Community Workshop. Those guides confirm an official creation and submission route, but they do not establish creator compensation, acceptance odds or a current creator-program contract.

Which access option fits you?
Choose free play if
- You want to learn the game or play its standard modes.
- You do not need Premier.
- You want to try Counter-Strike 2 before spending money.
Consider Prime if
- You specifically want Premier after reaching Profile Level 10.
- You want the Prime matchmaking pool.
- You value the Prime progression and weekly-care-package benefits listed by Steam Support.
What the “is here” wording means
“Counter-Strike 2 is here and free on Steam” works as a launch-era announcement headline. The live Steam listing establishes the game’s current free-to-play status and its free-upgrade description, but it does not by itself establish when that exact headline was originally published.
