For most Chromebooks, the simplest way to play Among Us is to install the Android app from Google Play. Your Chromebook needs Play Store access, and a school or work administrator may block installation or multiplayer. If the Play Store is missing, check the device’s support and management settings before trying alternatives; old instructions for installing Steam on ChromeOS are no longer dependable.
Install Among Us from Google Play
This is the best first option on a personal Chromebook that supports Android apps and has the Google Play Store enabled. No Linux setup or Steam installation is needed.
- Open the Launcher and select Play Store.
- Search for Among Us.
- Open the listing published by Innersloth LLC and select Install.
- When installation finishes, select Open, or launch the game later from the Launcher.
- Follow the prompts shown by the current game version to accept any terms and choose an available sign-in, account, or guest option.
Use the official Play Store listing rather than downloading an APK from an unfamiliar website. Unverified APKs can be altered, outdated, or unsafe, and sideloading is not necessary on a supported Chromebook.

- Select the time in the lower-right corner, then open Settings.
- Look under Apps or for a Google Play Store setting. Labels can differ slightly by ChromeOS version.
- If the setting is available but disabled, follow the on-screen instructions to enable it, then open Play Store and search for the game.
- To check the device’s update schedule, go to Settings → About ChromeOS → Additional details → Update schedule. See Google’s instructions for checking a Chromebook’s update schedule.
If there is no Play Store setting, the Chromebook may not support Android apps, or access may be restricted by its administrator, account, or operating mode. ChromeOS Flex should not be assumed to have the same Android-app support as a standard Chromebook. Eligible older Chromebooks that opt into extended updates can lose Android apps and Google Play Store access; Google explains that change in its extended updates guidance.

Start a game and choose controls
After launch, select the available online or local play option. To join friends in a private online game, use the room code provided by the host. Local play depends on the option being available and the devices being on a compatible local network. Menu wording and account prompts can change between game versions, so follow the choices displayed in your build.
Input varies by Chromebook and game build. A touchscreen can use touch controls; on a non-touch device, try the trackpad or a USB or Bluetooth mouse. Keyboard behavior is not guaranteed to be the same on every setup. Before joining a public match, test movement, interaction, reporting, and meeting controls in a private or low-stakes game. If keyboard input is awkward, switch to the game’s available touch or mouse scheme.

Prepare for smoother play
- Close browser tabs and apps you are not using, and keep enough free storage for app and system updates.
- Use stable Wi-Fi; moving closer to the router or choosing a 5 GHz network may help when available.
- Install available ChromeOS and game updates. If the game begins freezing after an update, restart the Chromebook.
- If the device becomes hot, use it on a hard, open surface rather than covering it or placing it on soft bedding.
- For multiplayer trouble, try another network if permitted, check that everyone has an up-to-date game version, and test a private room code.
Fix common installation and launch problems

| Install is unavailable or the download stalls | Check free storage and Wi-Fi, confirm Play Store is enabled, restart the Chromebook, and install available updates. If the device is on an extended-update path, verify whether Android support was removed; Google describes the effect here. |
| The game crashes or will not open | Restart the Chromebook, update the game in Play Store and ChromeOS, and check the app’s permissions and storage. If other Android apps also fail to launch, the issue may be with Play Store or the device rather than the game. Before uninstalling or clearing data, confirm how your account and progress are synced so you do not lose anything important. |
| The game is laggy | Close tabs and background apps, move nearer to the router, try 5 GHz Wi-Fi if available, and pause other downloads or streams on the network. If using cloud gaming, check connection quality before assuming the Chromebook needs an upgrade. |

Is Steam for Chromebook still a reliable option?
No. Do not buy a Chromebook or plan a new installation around Steam-for-Chromebook support. Google’s Steam for Chromebook help page still lists Among Us among compatible titles and gives historical Steam Beta minimums of an Intel i3 or Ryzen 3, 8 GB of RAM, and 128 GB of storage. It also documents the old Launcher route of searching for “Steam installer.” Those details describe the former Beta program, not a guarantee that a new installation works today.

Google Chromebook Community replies report that the Beta program ended on January 1, 2026, and users later reported that remaining installations stopped working after ChromeOS updates. These are community reports, not a formal first-party announcement, but they make Steam an unreliable route in 2026. A Steam icon or leftover installation on a device does not establish continuing support. This conflict is why the Play Store route is the practical starting point.

Could cloud gaming work instead?
A browser-based cloud service may be an option when local Android installation is unavailable, but Chromebook support alone does not prove that Among Us is currently in the service’s catalog. Check the service’s game listing and account or library requirements before paying for a subscription or buying a game.
As of this article’s 2026 update, NVIDIA’s GeForce NOW requirements page lists Chromebook access, a minimum of 4 GB RAM, and Chrome 77.x or later. NVIDIA’s targets are 15 Mbps for HD up to 60 FPS and 25 Mbps for 1080p at 60 FPS; it recommends latency below 80 ms to an NVIDIA data center and a USB gaming mouse for Chromebook play. These are service requirements and guidance, not a promise of lag-free gameplay. A stable connection matters, and school or workplace networks may block the service.

When another device is the better answer
If the Chromebook lacks Play Store support, is managed so the game cannot be installed, or cannot connect to multiplayer, the dependable alternatives are a supported Android phone or tablet, or a compatible Windows, Mac, Linux, or console device. For a Chromebook purchase, check Play Store support, the model’s update schedule, and enough storage for apps; paying extra for gaming graphics solely for Among Us is usually unnecessary.
