Sony Interactive Entertainment paid approximately $229 million for Insomniac Games, according to Sony’s financial reporting. The filing lists consideration of ¥24.895 billion, paid mainly in cash, for an acquisition completed on November 15, 2019. The amount was subject to possible adjustment based on Insomniac’s closing-date financial statements.
The price was not disclosed when Sony announced the deal
Sony announced on August 19, 2019 that it had entered into definitive agreements to acquire Insomniac Games. That announcement confirmed the transaction but did not state a purchase price. The acquisition was completed on November 15, 2019, as later reported in Sony’s securities filings.
The missing figure emerged through Sony’s financial disclosures rather than through the original press release. A contemporary account of that disclosure is available from Game Developer.
What Sony’s filing actually reports
Sony’s quarterly securities report records the transaction as follows:

The primary disclosure is in Sony’s quarterly securities report; a regulatory copy is also hosted by the SEC. “$229 million” is therefore an approximate dollar translation of the reported yen consideration, not a separately announced cash price stated on August 19.
How Sony allocated the purchase price
Sony’s accounting disclosed roughly $165 million in goodwill and $62 million in intangible assets in one quarterly filing. A later consolidated-financial-statements version lists goodwill at approximately $164 million while retaining the $62 million intangible-assets figure. Those filing-specific differences should not be read as a change to the headline ¥24.895 billion consideration.

What Sony acquired
The transaction acquired Insomniac Games, Inc., not merely one game. Insomniac became a wholly owned Sony subsidiary and joined Sony Interactive Entertainment’s worldwide first-party development organization, now associated with the PlayStation Studios structure.

Sony described Insomniac as a long-standing creative partner with more than 25 years of development experience. Its PlayStation relationship included the Ratchet & Clank series and other collaborations, while Marvel’s Spider-Man had become the studio’s most prominent recent release. Sony said that game had sold more than 13.2 million copies worldwide as of July 28, 2019—a historical figure quoted in the acquisition announcement, not a current sales total. What the $229 million did not necessarily buy
Sony bought the developer behind Marvel’s Spider-Man; the transaction should not be described as Sony buying Marvel’s Spider-Man character rights for $229 million. Marvel’s underlying intellectual property and the game’s licensing arrangements are separate from ownership of Insomniac.

Nor does the reported consideration automatically establish that Sony purchased every franchise or asset associated with every project Insomniac had worked on. The filing establishes the acquisition of the company and its recorded assets. It does not, by itself, itemize ownership of all third-party properties or contract rights connected to the studio’s work.

The figure looked low to many observers compared with Insomniac’s reputation and the commercial importance of Marvel’s Spider-Man. That is a reasonable interpretation of why the disclosure attracted attention, but “bargain” is not an accounting conclusion.

Several different measures are being mixed when the price is compared with a successful game:
- Acquisition consideration: the amount Sony recorded for obtaining Insomniac.
- Game performance: sales, revenue and profit from an individual title over time.
- Licensed-property value: rights controlled by parties such as Marvel, which are distinct from the developer’s ownership.
- Post-acquisition spending: salaries, facilities, technology, development, marketing and support costs after the transaction.
Sony’s filing does not reveal the deal’s complete expected return, the profitability of each Insomniac title or the lifetime cost of operating the studio. The $229 million figure should therefore be treated as reported acquisition consideration, not as a current valuation of Insomniac or proof of a specific profit.
Why the dates and wording matter
Calling this a “buyout” is understandable headline shorthand, but “acquisition” is more precise: Sony and Insomniac agreed to the transaction, Sony announced that agreement in August 2019, and the deal closed in November. Likewise, “exactly $229 million” overstates the evidence because Sony translated the yen amount approximately and noted that consideration could be adjusted after closing.
The most accurate one-sentence account is: Sony reported acquisition consideration of ¥24.895 billion—approximately $229 million—mainly paid in cash for Insomniac Games in a deal completed on November 15, 2019.
