Search Minecraft on Google and, when the Easter egg is available, a small grass-block button can turn the results page into a temporary mining game. Click it, break highlighted parts of the page, collect materials and improve your pickaxe. It is a short Minecraft-themed Google Search Easter egg first reported in May 2024 for Minecraft’s 15th anniversary—not a new Minecraft mode or a full version of the game.
What happens when you search for Minecraft?
After searching Google for Minecraft, look near the bottom of the results page for a grass-block icon. Selecting it changes the pointer into a Minecraft-style hand or mining cursor. Certain result-page sections then behave like breakable blocks, and clicking or tapping them reveals blocky scenes beneath the search results.

Reports describe forests, caves, ores, TNT, Nether-like imagery and bedrock-style areas appearing as you dig. A counter tracks blocks broken, while materials found during the sequence can lead to stronger pickaxes. The exact scenes and order can vary as Google changes the Easter egg.

How to activate and play the Google mining game
- Open Google Search in a browser with JavaScript enabled.
- Search for Minecraft. Related queries such as localized Minecraft terms have been reported to work, but the exact word “Minecraft” is the safest trigger.
- Wait for the results page to finish loading, then look near the bottom for the grass-block button.
- Click or tap the button. The page should switch into the mining interaction.
- Move the pointer over visible result sections until it indicates an interactive block, then click. On a phone, tap the visible blocks or result modules rather than trying to hover.
- Keep mining to increase the block counter, uncover new scenes and find materials.
- Use the X at the bottom of the experience to leave. A Creeper-style explosion animation may play before the ordinary results page returns.
One community tip suggests loading more search results before activating the button so there is more page content to transform. That is an optional player observation, not a documented Google requirement; the tip appears in this Reddit discussion.
How pickaxe upgrades are reported to work
The game uses a simplified version of Minecraft’s material progression. Sources agree on the broad idea—mine a material, then use the resulting tool on harder blocks—but they do not publish an official, fixed upgrade table. Later stages are described variously as ancient debris or Netherite.

Think of these as observed progression rather than a Mojang or Google technical specification. Beebom and Dot Esports both describe the wood-to-stronger-tool path, while later material names vary between reports.
Is there a goal or a high score?
There is no documented win screen, global leaderboard or official record. The practical objectives are to break blocks, raise the counter, discover materials, upgrade the pickaxe and reach deeper-looking areas. ComicBook.com mentions a player reaching 500, but that is an anecdotal score, not a verified Google record.
Why did Google add it?
Gaming coverage places the Easter egg’s original appearance on May 16–20, 2024, during Minecraft’s 15th-anniversary celebrations. 9to5Google’s original report and subsequent coverage connect the timing to that anniversary. No direct Google or Mojang announcement in the available public reporting explains the feature’s design, so the anniversary explanation should be understood as widely reported context rather than a quoted official statement.
Articles and social posts have continued rediscovering the interaction in 2025 and 2026. That is why it can seem new even though the Easter egg dates to 2024.

Google Search Easter eggs are changeable and may be limited by region, account, device, browser or Search layout. They can also be removed without notice. Try these checks:

- Use the exact query Minecraft on Google rather than another search engine.
- Wait for all results to load and scroll toward the bottom of the page.
- Return to the top if the control disappears while scrolling; one report says the button and exit control can reappear there.
- Try a current desktop browser such as Chrome, Safari, Edge or Firefox with JavaScript enabled.
- Check whether a script-blocking extension, strict privacy setting or managed network is preventing the interaction. Temporarily disable only an extension you trust, then restore it.
- Try another browser, device or a later date. A missing button does not prove the Easter egg never existed.
If clicking does nothing
- Confirm that you activated the grass-block button first.
- Move across the transformed page until the cursor changes or otherwise signals a mineable area.
- Click a visible result section, not the address bar, browser controls or empty margins.
- On mobile, tap the displayed blocks or result modules. Touch controls may not match desktop hover behavior.
- Do not assume every pixel is breakable; reports describe selected, changing regions rather than unrestricted access to the whole page.
Desktop and mobile availability
Reports describe the Easter egg working in desktop browsers and, in a February 2026 hands-on account, in Safari on an iPhone. That does not guarantee identical behavior across iOS, Android, desktop browsers or the Google app. Screen size, language, region and Search experiments can change the button’s placement or whether it appears at all. Treat it as available when supported, not as a permanent feature promised to every user.
Is it safe?
The interaction is presented as part of a Google Search page. You should not need an extension, APK, separate download, Minecraft server login or payment details. Be cautious of videos or search results claiming that a download is required; those are not part of the documented Easter egg.
Is it worth trying?
Yes, if you want a few minutes of novelty: the counter, escalating tools and changing Minecraft-inspired scenes make the search page feel briefly interactive. No, if you expect actual Minecraft gameplay. There is no normal world, crafting-and-survival loop, multiplayer session or persistent save—just a playful mining surprise built into Search.
