Yes—Crimson Desert launched with at least some AI-generated artwork. Pearl Abyss said on March 22, 2026, that experimental generative-AI tools were used to make some temporary 2D props during development, and that certain assets were accidentally left in the commercial release. Players had already flagged paintings, posters and signs with malformed anatomy and impossible object combinations. That confirms an AI-art problem, but not the claim that the whole game—or even most of its assets—was made by AI.
What players found in the launch build
Shortly after the March 20, 2026 launch, players and journalists circulated screenshots of environmental artwork that appeared inconsistent with conventional production art. Reported examples included framed paintings, wall decorations, posters and signs. Some showed distorted faces or bodies, weapons merging into figures, and horses with extra or incorrectly connected limbs.
These props appear to have been decorative world-building elements rather than the game’s central characters, combat systems or quests. A suspicious image is not automatically proof of AI generation: visual oddities can result from rushed human work, compression or other production mistakes. In this case, however, the examples gained significance because Pearl Abyss later confirmed that some 2D props had been created with generative-AI tools.
What Pearl Abyss confirmed
In a statement reported by Game Informer, Engadget and GameSpot, the studio said:

- Experimental generative-AI tools were used during early iteration to explore tone and atmosphere.
- The resulting 2D visual props were meant to be temporary and replaced through the normal art pipeline after review.
- Some were unintentionally included in the final release.
- The inclusion did not meet Pearl Abyss’s internal standards.
- The studio accepted responsibility, apologized and said its AI use should have been disclosed more clearly.
- An asset review and replacement work would follow in updates.
“Placeholder” describes the studio’s intended production status; it does not change the fact that some of the material shipped to paying customers.
Is the entire game AI-generated?
No. The available evidence supports a much narrower conclusion: generative AI was used for some 2D visual props, and some of those props reached the launch build. Reporting does not establish AI use for the game’s main 3D characters, animation, combat, open-world systems, voice acting, writing, quests, engine or overall environment.

GameDeveloper and GameSpot both provide context consistent with that limited scope. Calling Crimson Desert “an AI-generated game” goes beyond what Pearl Abyss has admitted or what the reporting demonstrates.
How extensive was the problem?
Players reported multiple examples, and some community posts suggested that similar images appeared repeatedly. That explains why “riddled with AI-generated assets” became a popular description. It is still commentary, not a measured inventory.

AI detectors cannot settle the question on their own. Source files, production records and the creator’s admission are stronger evidence than an automated score. Pearl Abyss’s statement confirms a category of use, but it does not identify every image, model or vendor involved.
Why the explanation did not end the backlash
Disclosure and trust
Players were not merely reacting to ugly paintings. They were reacting to learning after launch that generative tools had contributed to shipped content. GamesRadar reported that the store disclosure was updated to acknowledge generative AI in some 2D prop assets. A private prototype workflow and disclosed final-release content are different things; the latter affects a buyer’s expectations about authorship and production standards.

Quality control
The studio’s account is plausible for a small number of overlooked placeholders, but it also highlights a review failure. The assets were supposed to receive final art-team review and replacement. Their survival into a finished build means the release process did not catch visible errors, regardless of how much of the rest of the game was made by human artists.
Labor and authorship
Some players object to generative imagery in a premium game on principle, particularly where commissioned artists might otherwise have produced the work. Others distinguish between private brainstorming and final art. Pearl Abyss’s own admission places this incident in the harder-to-defend category: generated material was present in the product and was not clearly disclosed beforehand.

What changed after launch?
Pearl Abyss promised a broader review and replacement work. Around March 30, coverage from GameSpot reported that an update appeared to replace at least some disputed images. TweakTown’s March 2026 archive described Patch 1.01 as replacing controversial art, but that account is not a verified, exhaustive asset audit.
The defensible status is therefore: some launch artwork appears to have been replaced, while the studio’s complete review and the removal of every affected asset have not been publicly established in the available coverage. A patch changing one painting does not prove that all similar props were found or replaced.
What this means if you are deciding whether to buy
The controversy is relevant to trust, disclosure and the value you place on human-made environmental art. It is not evidence that the game’s combat, story, animation or entire visual identity was generated by AI. A buyer who dislikes any undisclosed generative content may reasonably wait for clearer documentation of the audit and current build. A buyer focused on gameplay can treat the issue as a limited—but real—quality-assurance and transparency failure.

The evidence-based verdict
The AI-art allegation was not baseless: Pearl Abyss confirmed that experimental generative-AI tools contributed to some 2D props that reached the launch version of Crimson Desert. Player screenshots help explain which images drew attention, but they do not provide a reliable count or prove that every suspicious asset came from AI. Later patches appear to have replaced some of the artwork, yet no complete public audit confirms that all disputed material is gone. The central failure was not that the entire game was “made by AI”; it was allowing undisclosed, temporary-looking generated props into a finished commercial release.
