Some developers and artists at studios associated with Capcom and Ubisoft reportedly learned about Nvidia’s DLSS 5 reveal only when it became public. That claim, reported by Insider Gaming, is narrower than saying either publisher—or every employee—was unaware. Nvidia had publicly listed both companies as DLSS 5 supporters when it unveiled the technology on March 16, 2026.
The dispute combines an internal-communications question with a technical one: DLSS 5 is presented as neural rendering that can change lighting and material appearance, not merely as conventional upscaling. The available evidence does not show that Nvidia used the games without corporate authorization, but it does raise questions about who reviewed the final demonstrations and how much control individual artists had.
What Nvidia announced on March 16
Nvidia introduced DLSS 5 at GTC as a real-time neural-rendering system targeted for release in fall 2026. According to Nvidia’s announcement, the model analyzes a single frame, recognizes elements such as characters, hair, fabric, skin and environmental lighting, and applies AI-generated changes to lighting and materials. Nvidia says the system can operate at up to 4K and gives developers controls for intensity, color grading and masking through its Streamline framework.
That description places DLSS 5 in a different category from the image reconstruction many players associate with earlier DLSS versions. Nvidia is describing a system that can alter visual appearance after the game has produced its scene, rather than only rebuilding missing pixels or generating additional frames. Nvidia’s technical and marketing claims are detailed in its Newsroom announcement and GeForce announcement.

Nvidia has not yet published a complete consumer compatibility matrix, final driver requirements or performance data. “Fall 2026” is a target window, not a confirmed universal launch date.
Which companies and games were involved?
Nvidia listed Bethesda, CAPCOM, Hotta Studio, NetEase, NCSOFT, S-GAME, Tencent, Ubisoft and Warner Bros. Games as DLSS 5 supporters. Public demonstrations or associated coverage referenced the following games and technology material:
| Game or demo | How it was associated with DLSS 5 |
|---|---|
| Resident Evil Requiem | Featured in demonstrations and reaction surrounding Capcom’s participation |
| Assassin’s Creed Shadows | Associated with Ubisoft’s support |
| Starfield | Referenced in Bethesda’s endorsement |
| Hogwarts Legacy | Listed among demonstration material in coverage |
| EA SPORTS FC | Listed among demonstration material in coverage |
| Zorah | Nvidia technology demonstration |
A publisher or developer’s game appearing in a Nvidia presentation indicates some level of corporate cooperation or authorization. It does not prove that every team member saw the footage, approved the final treatment or knew when the announcement would be published.

Insider Gaming also reported that Capcom personnel found the announcement and the publisher’s involvement surprising, and that some worried it could signal a broader move toward generative AI in game production. PC Gamer, PCWorld and TechRadar subsequently covered the claims.
These are attributed reports from anonymous sources, not independently verified statements from Capcom or Ubisoft as companies. “Unaware” could mean unaware of DLSS 5 itself, unaware of the public timing, unaware of the specific demonstration or unaware of the final visual changes. The reporting does not identify which interpretation applied to each source.
Does this mean Capcom and Ubisoft knew nothing?
No. The evidence supports a narrower conclusion: some developers and artists reportedly lacked advance knowledge of the reveal or final presentation. It does not establish that either publisher’s executives, licensing staff, engineers, producers, technical directors or marketing departments were uninformed.

Large publishers divide technical partnerships, production work and publicity approvals among different groups. A business-development or marketing team could authorize a build or promotional material while artists working on the game did not see the final version. That is an inference from the reported split between publisher-level participation and employee surprise, not a documented account of who signed off.

Why the DLSS 5 demonstrations caused backlash
AI can change authored presentation
Critics focused on demonstrations in which the technology appeared to change lighting, skin, hair, materials and overall character presentation. Reaction to the Resident Evil Requiem footage was especially intense, with commentators describing an artificial beautification effect or a look that differed from the game’s authored direction. WIRED also reported concerns about visual artifacts and artistic control.
Approval is different from consent
The central governance question is not simply whether Nvidia had permission to show a game. It is what that permission covered. The public record does not say which department approved the demonstrations, whether approval covered AI-modified output, or whether affected artists could review or reject the final treatment.
“Generative AI” means different things here
Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang defended DLSS 5 by describing a combination of controllable game geometry and textures with generative AI. Nvidia’s position is that developers determine how the system is used. Critics are concerned that a neural model may visibly reinterpret authored content even when it is operating within developer-selected controls.
Those arguments address different questions. A controllable runtime effect can still produce an image artists dislike, while a striking demonstration does not prove that every production game will use the same intensity or method. It remains unestablished how often shipped games will modify assets or how granular the controls will be in practice.

What Nvidia and Bethesda say
Nvidia says DLSS 5 is designed to give developers control over intensity, color grading and masking. Bethesda Game Studios head Todd Howard endorsed the technology for Starfield and future Bethesda titles in Nvidia’s investor-relations release.
Separate coverage reported that Bethesda characterized the public demonstration as an early look. Its art teams would continue adjusting the lighting and final effect, with the result kept under artists’ control and optional for players. That response matters because it shows participating studios have not expressed a uniform opposition to the technology.

How Capcom’s AI policy fits
On March 23, 2026, Capcom told Insider Gaming that it does not use generative-AI-generated materials in game content. The company also said it planned to investigate AI technologies that could improve development efficiency and productivity, including graphics and sound programming.

That statement draws a boundary between AI-generated material appearing in a finished game, AI-assisted tools used during development and runtime rendering applied to a game’s image. It does not amount to a rejection of DLSS 5: Nvidia had listed Capcom as a supporter, and Capcom’s statement did not announce a cancellation or opposition to the feature.
What remains unconfirmed
- Which Capcom and Ubisoft departments approved Nvidia’s demonstrations.
- Whether the individual artists and developers quoted by Insider Gaming saw or approved the final footage.
- Whether the demonstrations used a preview build, and how closely that output matches release software.
- Which listed games will actually ship with DLSS 5.
- Whether players will be able to disable the effect in every supported title.
- How much per-scene, per-material or per-character control developers will receive.
- DLSS 5’s final hardware requirements, image-quality trade-offs and performance impact.

What the report actually establishes
The strongest supported framing is that some developers and artists at Capcom- and Ubisoft-connected studios reportedly were not briefed on the final DLSS 5 reveal or the way their games were presented. Nvidia officially linked both publishers to the technology, so “Capcom and Ubisoft had no idea” is too broad.
The story nevertheless exposes a real communication and governance issue. A corporate partnership can coexist with limited knowledge among the people whose artistic work appears in a demonstration. Whether that becomes a lasting labor or creative-autonomy conflict will depend on the shipping implementations, the controls developers receive and the choices publishers make about disclosure and approval.
