An Xbox controller can connect to a Windows PC by USB, Bluetooth, or the Xbox Wireless Adapter. Use USB for the quickest, most reliable setup; Bluetooth for convenient wireless play when both devices support it; and the Xbox Wireless Adapter when Bluetooth is unavailable or unreliable.
Choose the right connection

For a replacement, consider an official Xbox Wireless Controller only after testing the controller you already own.
Check controller and PC compatibility first
Bluetooth support depends on the exact controller revision. Current Xbox Series X|S Wireless Controllers and newer Xbox Wireless Controllers generally include Bluetooth, while some older Xbox One revisions do not. Xbox Elite Wireless Controller Series 2 models support modern PC connections, but features and firmware can affect behavior. An Xbox 360 wireless controller does not pair through ordinary Bluetooth: it needs its compatible wireless receiver or a wired connection.

If a controller never appears in Bluetooth settings, check its model documentation rather than assuming it is defective. - Have charged batteries or a charged battery pack.
- Use a USB cable that carries data. Some USB-C cables provide power only.
- Keep the controller near the PC during wireless pairing.
Method 1: Pair over Bluetooth in Windows 11
Put the controller into pairing mode
- Press the Xbox button to turn on the controller.
- Press and hold the small pairing button on the top edge, near the USB port, for about three seconds.
- Release it when the Xbox button flashes rapidly. Rapid flashing indicates active discovery mode; a steady light or slower flashing usually does not.
Add it in Settings
- Open Start > Settings > Bluetooth & devices.
- Turn on Bluetooth.
- Select Add device, then choose Bluetooth.
- Select Xbox Wireless Controller when it appears.
- Wait for Windows to report that it is connected.
You can also select the network, sound, or battery area on the taskbar, open the Bluetooth device list, and choose the controller under available devices. A successful connection normally leaves the Xbox button illuminated and shows the controller as connected in Settings.
Pairing only establishes communication with Windows. The game or launcher must still support and detect the controller.
Windows 10 legacy path
Windows 10 uses Start > Settings > Devices > Bluetooth & other devices > Add Bluetooth or other device > Bluetooth. Put the controller in rapid-flash pairing mode, select Xbox Wireless Controller, and wait for the connected status.

Microsoft ended Windows 10 support on October 14, 2025. The operating system may continue to run, but normal free security updates, technical assistance, and Windows Update support are no longer provided. Method 2: Connect with a USB cable
- Connect the controller directly to the PC with a known-good data cable.
- Wait for Windows to detect it.
- Test it in a controller-compatible game or with
joy.cplas described below.
If it fails, try another USB port, another data cable, and a direct connection instead of a hub. A charge-only cable can power the controller while providing no data connection. Testing on another PC, if available, helps separate a controller fault from a Windows or USB problem. USB is also the best first diagnostic: if it works by USB but not wirelessly, investigate pairing, batteries, drivers, interference, or firmware.
Method 3: Use the Xbox Wireless Adapter
- Plug the Xbox Wireless Adapter for Windows into a USB port.
- Allow Windows to detect and install it.
- Press the adapter’s pairing button.
- Press and hold the controller’s pairing button until the Xbox button flashes.
- Wait until the controller and adapter lights become steady.
The adapter is not a generic Bluetooth dongle. It uses Microsoft’s Xbox Wireless protocol and can suit a desktop without Bluetooth or a setup in which Bluetooth repeatedly disconnects. Confirm that Windows and the game see the controller
Check Windows
Open Settings > Bluetooth & devices and confirm that the controller is connected. For a lower-level test:
- Press Win + R.
- Enter
joy.cpland press Enter. - Select the controller and choose Properties.
- Test buttons, sticks, triggers, and vibration where the interface supports it.
The joy.cpl interface can vary by Windows release. A working entry there proves Windows is receiving input, not that every game will use it.
Understand the three statuses
- Paired: Windows remembers the controller.
- Connected: It is communicating with Windows now.
- Recognized by the game: The game or launcher has detected and mapped it.
These states are not interchangeable. Restart a game after connecting the controller if it was launched first.

Update controller firmware
Install the Xbox Accessories app when pairing repeatedly fails, buttons or accessories behave incorrectly, the controller is inconsistently recognized, or an Elite controller’s paddles and mappings are wrong. The app may need the controller connected by USB to detect or update it. Steam also directs Windows users to update Xbox controller firmware through Xbox Accessories with a USB connection: Steam controller troubleshooting.
Firmware updates can improve compatibility and stability, but they cannot guarantee a fix for defective hardware, a failing Bluetooth adapter, or a game-specific input problem.

Fix common connection failures
The controller does not appear in Bluetooth settings
- Confirm the PC has Bluetooth hardware and that Bluetooth is enabled.
- Turn the controller off and on, then hold its pairing button until the Xbox button flashes rapidly.
- Move it close to the PC.
- Remove an old Xbox controller entry from Windows and pair again.
- Disconnect the controller from a nearby Xbox, phone, tablet, or other PC.
- Restart Windows.
- Install the latest Bluetooth driver from the PC or adapter manufacturer.
- Run Bluetooth troubleshooting through the Get Help app.

It connects, then disconnects
- Replace or recharge depleted batteries.
- Remove the controller from other nearby hosts that may be reclaiming the connection.
- Forget it in Windows and pair again.
- Update controller firmware and the PC’s Bluetooth driver.
- Reduce distance and possible USB 3 or other radio interference.
- Test by USB, then try the Xbox Wireless Adapter if Bluetooth remains unstable.
It works in Windows but not in a game
Check that the game supports Xbox controllers and identify its launcher. Steam Input can translate or remap input, while a game may expect XInput rather than DirectInput. Try enabling or disabling Steam Input for that game, avoid running multiple controller-emulation tools, disconnect duplicate controllers, and restart the game after changing the connection. Button prompts are controlled by the game; a Windows device name of “Xbox Wireless Controller” does not guarantee Xbox-style prompts.
The controller is shown as a generic device
This can reflect a Bluetooth connection instead of Xbox Wireless Adapter connectivity, outdated firmware or drivers, a third-party controller, or a launcher’s remapping layer. Verify input with joy.cpl and in a known-compatible game before replacing hardware.
The Xbox button keeps flashing
Flashing means the connection has not completed. Put both the adapter and controller into pairing mode, temporarily turn off nearby Xbox consoles and Bluetooth hosts, forget and re-add the controller, try USB, update firmware, and use the official adapter if Bluetooth pairing continues to fail.
Bluetooth is missing from Windows
Check Airplane mode, the Bluetooth toggle, Device Manager, and the manufacturer’s driver. If the PC has no Bluetooth hardware, add a USB Bluetooth adapter or use the Xbox Wireless Adapter. A generic Bluetooth adapter provides standard Bluetooth, not Microsoft’s Xbox Wireless protocol.
It works only while plugged in
Possible causes include an incompatible non-Bluetooth model, depleted or absent batteries, incomplete pairing, outdated firmware, or a PC Bluetooth fault. Test another data cable and USB port before blaming the cable, then test the controller on another PC or with another wireless method.

- Choose USB when you need reliability now, are updating firmware, or are diagnosing a wireless failure.
- Choose Bluetooth when your laptop or desktop already has stable Bluetooth and your controller supports it.
- Choose the Xbox Wireless Adapter when the PC lacks Bluetooth, Bluetooth is unreliable, or you specifically want Xbox Wireless connectivity.
- Replace the controller only after it fails with a known-good USB connection and, where applicable, another wireless method.
