Yes, a Raspberry Pi 4 can run Steam Link to stream games from a gaming PC. Running the full Steam client and games directly on the Pi is a separate, experimental project: the Pi uses an ARM processor, while conventional Steam software and most Steam games target x86 or x86-64 PCs. For dependable play, use the Pi as a streaming client, not as a replacement gaming computer.
What does “run Steam” mean?
There are three different things a person might mean by running Steam on a Pi 4. Only one is a straightforward, practical route.

In the streaming case, the host PC does the demanding work of rendering the game. The Pi does not make a game playable if the host cannot run it, and streaming still depends on the network.

The Raspberry Pi 4 Model B uses a Broadcom BCM2711 with a quad-core 64-bit ARM Cortex-A72 processor, rather than the x86 or x86-64 processor found in a conventional PC. Raspberry Pi’s Pi 4 product brief documents its hardware, and the Raspberry Pi OS documentation describes the operating system’s 32-bit and 64-bit editions.

The obstacle is not simply that Steam is for Linux or that the Pi runs Linux. Linux programs are built for particular processor architectures. The ordinary Steam Linux client and most Linux Steam games are built for x86 or x86-64; they cannot run natively just because Raspberry Pi OS is also Linux. The 64-bit Pi OS edition is a sensible base for current Pi 4 use, but it does not turn ARM software into x86 software.
Graphics support and game dependencies add further hurdles. A game may rely on a graphics API, launcher, copy-protection system, anti-cheat component, or runtime that is not available or compatible in the Pi’s software setup.
Best option: install Steam Link
Steam Link is the practical way to use a Pi 4 for Steam games when you already have a capable Windows or Linux gaming PC. Raspberry Pi’s published installation guidance uses the Raspberry Pi OS package repository. Start with a current Raspberry Pi OS image; the official operating-system downloads page lists current images and Pi 4 compatibility.
What you need
- A Raspberry Pi 4 running Raspberry Pi OS, connected to a display.
- A host PC with Steam installed and the games you want to play.
- Both devices on the same local network. Ethernet is preferable for the Pi and the host.
- A controller or keyboard and mouse suitable for your games.
The host must be available on the network and able to run the game locally. Raspberry Pi’s installation documentation specifies a suitable 5V/3A USB-C power supply for the Pi 4 and recommends a microSD card of at least 32GB for Raspberry Pi OS; see installing Raspberry Pi OS.

Install and connect
- Update Raspberry Pi OS. Open a terminal and run
sudo apt update, followed bysudo apt upgrade. - Install Steam Link. Run
sudo apt install steamlink. Raspberry Pi publishes this repository-based route in its Steam Link installation guidance. - Launch the app. Run
steamlinkin the terminal, or open Steam Link from the desktop application menu if it appears there. - Pair with the host. Follow the app’s on-screen pairing instructions. It will display a PIN to enter on the host PC when prompted.
- Connect your controller. Pair or plug it into the Pi and verify that Steam Link recognizes it before starting a game.
Raspberry Pi’s earlier Steam Link guide also documents installation through the package repository. Avoid copying the old direct-download instructions for the version 1.0.7 .deb file from the 2018-era installation article; those instructions are version-specific historical guidance, not the current general installation route.
Get a smoother Steam Link stream
Streaming quality depends on several links in the chain: the host’s ability to render and encode the game, the network, the Pi’s ability to decode the stream, the display, and the controller connection. Troubleshoot the weakest link rather than assuming every stutter means the Pi is underpowered.
- Use Ethernet on both ends where possible. Raspberry Pi’s Pi 4 Steam Link testing recommended a wired connection and reported better results with the gaming PC also on Ethernet.
- If Wi-Fi is necessary, improve the signal. Use a strong 5 GHz connection where available, place the Pi close to the access point, and reduce interference or congestion. Wi-Fi can work, but its quality depends on signal strength and the router.
- Reduce resolution or bitrate if video stutters. Lower stream demands can help identify whether bandwidth or decoding is the problem. A stable lower-quality stream is often preferable to a higher-quality stream with interruptions.
- Check the host’s workload and connection. Confirm that Steam is running, the host is visible on the local network, and the PC is not struggling to render or encode the game.
- Consider the game’s latency sensitivity. Turn-based, strategy, and many single-player games are generally more forgiving of delay than fast competitive games.
- Check controller input separately. If the picture is smooth but controls are delayed or missing, verify controller pairing and connection rather than changing video settings first.
The Pi 4’s ability to output a high-resolution display signal does not guarantee a matching game stream. Raspberry Pi documents support for a single display up to 4K at 60 Hz with the appropriate configuration, or two displays up to 4K at 30 Hz; 4K60 requires hdmi_enable_4kp60=1 and HDMI0. See the display configuration documentation. For a streamed game, the host must render and encode the chosen resolution, the network must carry it, and the Pi must decode it smoothly. Do not assume every setup will stream gameplay at 4K60.
Can the full Steam client run locally?
Community projects Box86 and Box64 translate x86 and x86-64 Linux software for ARM systems. Their documentation describes a route for running Linux Steam, but it requires more than installing the usual Steam package. The Box86 project documentation says Box64 is also needed for the full Steam experience because Steam uses 64-bit components such as steamwebhelper.

This is an advanced hobbyist setup, not an official Valve-supported Raspberry Pi Steam installation. Compatibility depends on the Pi OS architecture, the translation tools, system libraries, graphics stack, and Steam updates. Box64’s January 2026 version 0.4.0 release notes report improved Steam support on ARM64, while also warning that Box32 remains experimental and unstable and that crashes—including during downloads—should be expected.
Memory and client issues
The Box86 documentation warns that Steam uses substantial memory: a 4GB Pi may be near the practical limit, and swap may be needed during startup or login. Big Picture mode needs additional components and memory. These are not guarantees that a particular Pi configuration will work; less memory makes the experiment still less attractive.
If Steam launches but its login window is blank, a problem with steamwebhelper is one possibility. The Box86 project documents these as possible workarounds for some client-launch problems:

They are troubleshooting options, not a fix for every blank window or a general installation procedure. Changes to Steam, the operating system, drivers, or compatibility layers can alter the outcome.

Can Steam games run locally once Steam opens?
Getting the Steam client to launch does not establish that a game will run. Each title has its own processor, graphics, memory, launcher, and protection requirements.
Native Linux games
A Linux game needs an ARM-compatible build to run natively on the Pi. The label “Linux” only identifies an operating-system family; it does not mean that the game includes an ARM executable. Most Linux games on Steam target x86 or x86-64, so they still need translation.
Windows games through Wine or Proton
Running a Windows game may involve several layers at once: CPU translation through Box86 or Box64, Windows API compatibility through Wine or Proton, and working graphics translation. A game can still fail because of performance limits, memory pressure, a launcher, DRM, or unsupported anti-cheat. Box64 does not promise compatibility with every Steam title or Proton configuration.

Graphics compatibility
Box86 notes that many x86 games need OpenGL and that ARM systems may need an additional translation layer such as gl4es. Its documentation lists these Pi 4-specific settings as possible hints when a game starts and then exits:

These settings are project-specific troubleshooting suggestions, not guarantees. Graphics behavior varies with the operating-system release and graphics stack. There is no dependable universal compatibility list that makes local Steam gaming on a Pi 4 predictable.
Common problems and what to check
Steam asks for 32-bit libraries
If this happens after trying to install the conventional x86 Steam package, the underlying problem may be the processor architecture, not one missing library. Adding another library does not convert an ARM system into an x86 system. Raspberry Pi forum discussions document this common confusion, but the Pi’s processor specification and OS documentation are the primary references: Raspberry Pi forum discussion.
Steam Link does not launch after an OS upgrade
Old guides or archived installers may make assumptions about package architecture that no longer match the installed OS. Use the current repository package and consult current Raspberry Pi guidance instead of installing an old standalone package.
The stream is laggy or choppy
- Check whether the host PC is on Ethernet; then check the Pi’s connection.
- If using Wi-Fi, assess signal strength, interference, router placement, and network congestion.
- Lower stream resolution or bitrate and see whether playback improves.
- Check host rendering and encoding load, then the display refresh settings.
- If video is fine but control response is not, check controller pairing and its Bluetooth or USB connection.
A Linux game will not start
Check whether the title has an ARM build. If it is an x86 Linux game, the OS label alone does not make it native to the Pi. If attempting translation, the graphics stack and title-specific dependencies may be the reason it fails.
Should you use a Pi 4 for Steam?
- You already own a Pi 4 and a gaming PC: Steam Link is a reasonable way to play in another room or on a TV; start with the hardware you have and use Ethernet if convenient.
- You want a small, quiet streaming client: The Pi 4 can fit that role, provided your host and network are up to the task.
- You enjoy Linux tinkering: Box86 and Box64 make local experiments possible, but plan for troubleshooting and game-by-game failures rather than a console-like experience.
- You want dependable local Steam gaming: Choose x86 hardware instead of buying a Pi 4 for this purpose. A used Intel or AMD mini PC can run the conventional Steam client without the ARM-to-x86 translation step, though performance still depends on its processor and graphics hardware.
- You want a ready-made Steam-focused device: The Steam Deck offers a much more integrated gaming environment, but it is less suited to GPIO and maker projects.
A Raspberry Pi 5 is a more capable Pi and has received newer Steam Link attention, including reported high-resolution and high-refresh-rate demonstrations, but it remains ARM hardware and is not a guaranteed local Steam replacement.
