For a new build, the RTX 5060 Ti 16GB is usually the better buy than the RTX 4060 Ti 16GB when their current prices are close. For someone who already owns an RTX 4060 Ti, the 5060 Ti is generally too small a gaming upgrade to justify a large outlay. The 5060 Ti 8GB is the harder recommendation: choose it mainly for budget 1080p gaming when it costs meaningfully less than the 16GB model.

This is a desktop-card comparison; laptop GPUs have different power limits and performance. Since launch prices are no longer a dependable guide to what a card costs, compare current prices for the exact capacity and model before buying.

What is different between the RTX 5060 Ti and RTX 4060 Ti?

Each generation is sold with either 8GB or 16GB of memory. Capacity matters, so a comparison should identify both cards’ VRAM rather than treat every RTX 5060 Ti or RTX 4060 Ti as interchangeable. Within a generation, the 8GB and 16GB cards use the same core configuration; additional memory helps when a game or application needs it, but does not automatically raise frame rates. NVIDIA described the 4060 Ti versions as otherwise identical in specifications when it introduced them.

The 5060 Ti has a modestly larger shader count, while its much higher stated bandwidth comes mainly from GDDR7. Neither core count nor bandwidth alone predicts game performance: cache, compression, game engine, resolution, and memory pressure all matter. Board-partner versions can also differ in clocks, power limits, cooling, dimensions, connector, and noise. See the RTX 5060 family specifications and RTX 4060 Ti specifications.

How much faster is the RTX 5060 Ti in games?

In Tom’s Hardware’s direct 16GB-card comparison, the RTX 5060 Ti averaged about 16% faster at 1080p medium, 16% faster in its rasterization suite, and 17% faster in its ray-tracing suite than the RTX 4060 Ti 16GB. A separate review characterized the 5060 Ti’s gaming uplift over its 4060 Ti 16GB predecessor as about 15%. These are review-suite averages, not promises for every game; results shift with resolution, settings, CPU limits, VRAM demand, and whether upscaling or frame generation is enabled.

That is a real but incremental generational gain. It is more useful when a game is GPU-limited at 1440p or uses demanding ray tracing; at 1080p, a CPU bottleneck can make the difference less visible. At 4K, neither card should be treated as a high-end native-rendering option: expect to lower settings or use upscaling in demanding games. The independent comparisons are available from Tom’s Hardware’s 16GB face-off and its RTX 5060 Ti 16GB review.

Keep native rendering separate from DLSS results. A generated-frame counter is not equivalent to the same increase in rendered frames, and NVIDIA’s promotional performance claims rely on supported games and DLSS Multi Frame Generation rather than like-for-like native rendering. Do not interpret those claims as the 5060 Ti being twice as fast in ordinary gaming.

Should you get 8GB or 16GB?

Choose based on the games, resolution, settings, and expected time before your next upgrade—not just today’s average FPS. Eight gigabytes remains workable for many 1080p games, especially competitive titles and moderate settings. It can become a constraint with high-resolution textures, mods, ray tracing, and some newer games, leading to texture reductions or stuttering when memory demand exceeds capacity.

RTX 5060 Ti 8GB

Its GPU core is the same as the 16GB version, and it can perform similarly when a workload fits within 8GB. It is a reasonable budget option for 1080p if the savings are substantial, but less comfortable for buyers planning years of high-quality 1440p play.

RTX 5060 Ti 16GB

More VRAM provides headroom for memory-heavy games, texture packs, mods, and some creative workloads. It is not inherently faster when a game fits in 8GB, but is less likely to hit a memory limit. Tom’s Hardware’s capacity comparison found that differences can be very large in particular 4K workloads while remaining small in less demanding scenarios; that is not a universal FPS uplift. Its testing is detailed in the 8GB versus 16GB comparison.

At launch, NVIDIA set the 5060 Ti 8GB at $379 and 16GB at $429, a $50 gap that favored buying the larger-memory version for most longer-term builds. Those were April 2025 launch prices, not current quotes. If today’s 16GB premium is much larger, reconsider the value rather than paying any price for capacity.

What do DLSS, ray tracing, and AI features add?

The RTX 5060 Ti launched in April 2025 with DLSS 4 branding and supports Multi Frame Generation; NVIDIA’s current product page refers to DLSS 4.5. The 4060 Ti remains part of NVIDIA’s DLSS, ray-tracing, Reflex, and driver ecosystem, but lacks the Blackwell-era Multi Frame Generation feature set. The generation label does not by itself establish which features a particular game supports: check the game’s implementation.

  • Frame generation creates additional displayed frames; it does not make the GPU render that many frames natively.
  • It is available only in supported games and software. Latency, image quality, artifacts, and the underlying real frame rate affect whether it feels useful.
  • Use native raster and ray-tracing results to judge rendering speed, then treat upscaling and frame generation as separate options.

The 5060 Ti has fourth-generation RT cores and fifth-generation Tensor cores, versus third-generation RT and fourth-generation Tensor cores in the 4060 Ti. NVIDIA lists 759 AI TOPS for the 5060 Ti and 353 AI TOPS for the 4060 Ti, but TOPS is not a universal measure of gaming or application performance. Newer hardware may benefit supported ray-traced or path-traced games, video effects, and AI-assisted tools; software support, memory capacity, and the specific workload still determine practical results. The 5060 Ti is not thereby a high-end professional AI accelerator.

Power, compatibility, and creator features

NVIDIA rates the 5060 Ti at 180W total graphics power and recommends a 600W system power supply; the 4060 Ti is rated at 160W or 165W depending on configuration, with a 550W recommended system supply. These are product guidance figures, not a guarantee for every partner card or complete PC. Tom’s Hardware measured roughly similar or slightly lower gaming power for its tested 5060 Ti in some resolutions despite its higher rated power limit; that result applies to its test setup, not every model.

  • Measure case clearance for card length and thickness; some partner models occupy 2.5 or 3 slots.
  • Confirm the PSU has the required connector and is a suitable-quality unit, not merely the stated wattage.
  • Check the motherboard and monitor outputs, especially in compact prebuilts or systems with OEM-specific power supplies.

The 5060 Ti uses ninth-generation NVENC and sixth-generation NVDEC, compared with eighth-generation NVENC and fifth-generation NVDEC on the 4060 Ti; both support AV1 encoding and decoding, according to NVIDIA’s product specifications. Streamers, gameplay recorders, and video editors may value the newer media hardware, but the practical benefit depends on the application and workflow. Gaming-only buyers should not pay a large premium for encoder generation alone.

How should you compare prices now?

The launch prices are useful historical context, not a substitute for current quotes. The 5060 Ti launched at $379 for 8GB and $429 for 16GB; the 4060 Ti launched at $399 for 8GB and $499 for 16GB. NVIDIA’s announcements document the 5060 Ti launch pricing and 4060 Ti launch pricing and memory configurations. An August 2026 report describes US RTX 50-series price increases, reinforcing why launch MSRP should not be assumed to remain available.

No dependable current retailer-by-retailer price snapshot is established here, so compare live listings in your region rather than relying on an undated price-per-frame figure. Match capacity and condition, and compare total cost including shipping, taxes, coupons, or rebates. A practical rule for the same-capacity 16GB cards is to favor the 5060 Ti when its price is within roughly 10–15% of the 4060 Ti; a deeply discounted 4060 Ti can still make sense for 1080p. Avoid the 5060 Ti 8GB if it is only slightly cheaper than the 16GB version. If the 5060 Ti 16GB is priced close to a substantially faster tier, compare that alternative before buying.

For used cards, the discount must compensate for both the smaller performance uplift and the older feature set. For an owner upgrading, compare the cash you must add after selling the 4060 Ti—not the new card’s sticker price alone. Pricing has been volatile in the United States; see Tom’s Hardware’s August 2026 report.

Which card makes sense for your situation?

Building a new 1080p gaming PC

The 5060 Ti 16GB is the more flexible choice if the price gap is reasonable. The 8GB model can suit a strict budget and games that fit its memory, while a discounted 4060 Ti may also work if priced well below a comparable 5060 Ti.

Building for 1440p

Favor the 5060 Ti 16GB if prices are close. Its extra memory headroom is useful for higher texture settings and demanding games, though it does not turn the card into a 4K high-end GPU.

Already own an RTX 4060 Ti

Usually keep it if it meets your needs. A mid-teens gaming gain is not transformational; consider upgrading when you regularly hit VRAM limits, need steadier 1440p performance, want demanding ray tracing or path tracing, or can move to a 5060 Ti 16GB at a small net cost after resale.

Streaming or video editing

The 5060 Ti’s newer media engines may be useful if your software supports the relevant workflow, and 16GB can help memory-heavy projects. Compare application-specific requirements before paying extra; both generations already support AV1 encoding and decoding.

Local AI or CUDA-dependent creative applications

The 5060 Ti offers newer Tensor hardware and more memory in its 16GB version, but neither AI TOPS nor generation alone guarantees a faster result. Check the application’s GPU support and memory needs; a workload that exceeds available VRAM may be more sensitive to capacity than headline compute figures.

What alternatives should you check?

Radeon RX 9060 XT 16GB

AMD lists a 16GB GDDR6 configuration, 128-bit memory interface, and 160W board power for the RX 9060 XT. It is worth checking for raster-focused buyers if its local price is attractive. The available specifications do not establish a neutral performance or price comparison, so verify current independent benchmarks for the games you play. NVIDIA may be preferable if you rely on CUDA, DLSS, NVIDIA-specific creator software, ray tracing performance, or its encoder ecosystem. AMD’s official specifications provide the listed hardware details.

Discounted RTX 4060 Ti or a faster GPU

A low-priced 4060 Ti can be a sensible 1080p purchase, particularly if you do not need the 5060 Ti’s newer features. Conversely, when a 5060 Ti 16GB approaches the price of a clearly faster GPU, compare that higher tier using current tests and prices rather than paying a premium simply to stay in this class.

Wait for a better deal

If prices are inflated or the 8GB and 16GB options are poorly spaced, there is no need to force a purchase. Recheck the exact model, capacity, and retailer price when the market is more favorable.
