Sony identifies NP-34958-9 with a padlocked PS4 game. The official first response is to fully power-cycle the console, then use Settings > Account Management > Restore Licenses > Restore. This does not delete games or saves. If the lock remains, check the purchasing account, primary-PS4 activation, PlayStation Plus eligibility and PSN availability before considering any destructive troubleshooting.
What NP-34958-9 means
The code means the PS4 cannot currently validate the entitlement needed to launch a padlocked game. It is primarily a licensing or account-access symptom, not proof that the installation is corrupted or that the console hardware has failed. Possible causes include a temporary license-sync problem, the wrong account being signed in, a changed primary-PS4 activation, an expired or unavailable PlayStation Plus entitlement, or an account-management outage.

- Close the game and turn the PS4 off completely; do not leave it in Rest Mode.
- Disconnect the power cable and wait a few minutes.
- Reconnect the cable and turn on the console.
- Sign in to the PSN account that purchased the game.
- Open Settings > Account Management > Restore Licenses.
- Select Restore, then launch the game again.
Restoring licenses is non-destructive. Sony says it does not affect console data and lists padlocked games among the situations where it can help: Restore Licenses guidance.

Confirm which account owns the game
A game can remain installed even when the signed-in user no longer has launch rights. Check that the current user is the account that bought the title, that the purchase appears in that account’s Library or transaction history, and that you are using the correct regional account. Add-ons can have separate entitlements.
If another household account owns the game, that account normally must have this PS4 activated as its primary console for other local users to access its Store purchases. A sharing arrangement can stop working if the owner changes the primary console or the account is no longer available. Sony explains the access rules in its primary PS4 activation guide.

Check PlayStation Plus eligibility
Restoring a license cannot revive a subscription entitlement that no longer exists. For a PlayStation Plus game, confirm that:
- the subscription is active;
- the title is still included in the PlayStation Plus benefit or catalog available to your plan and region; and
- you are distinguishing a claimed subscription game from a game purchased outright.
A catalog title can leave the service even though its files remain on the drive.

Check PSN status, software and connectivity
Check PlayStation Network status (the status was checked for this article on August 18, 2026) before changing console settings. An incident affecting account management, the Store or gaming services can lock several games at once. A clear status page does not rule out an account-specific problem.
- Make sure the PS4 is connected to the internet and install the latest system software.
- Power off the router, wait at least five minutes, restart it, then retry the PS4 operation.
- Sign out of the purchasing account, restart the PS4, and sign back in before restoring licenses again.
A router restart can clear a connectivity or authentication interruption; it cannot fix an ownership problem, an expired subscription or an activation limit. Sony does not establish DNS changes, mobile hotspots or a particular connection type as universal NP-34958-9 fixes.

Activate the correct primary PS4
On the console, use Settings > Account Management > Activate as Your Primary PlayStation 4 > Activate. Each account can have one primary PS4. Activation allows other users on that console to use applications purchased by that account and some PlayStation Plus benefits.

Remote-deactivate an inaccessible old PS4 only when needed
If you cannot access the old console, Sony’s web path is Account Management > Device Management > PlayStation Consoles > Deactivate All Devices. You can then sign in on the current PS4 and try primary activation again. Sony limits remote deactivation of all devices to once every six months, and it affects every console linked to the account. It does not transfer game ownership, so do not use it as a routine experiment—especially on a shared account.

What not to do first
- Do not initialize the PS4 just because a game is padlocked. Initialization deletes user and game data and cannot be undone.
- Do not reinstall every affected game before checking entitlement; reinstalling cannot repair a missing purchase or expired subscription and can consume substantial bandwidth.
- Do not give PSN credentials to strangers, buy accounts or use unauthorized license workarounds.
- Do not treat DNS changes, hotspot switching, guest-account activation or database rebuilding as Sony-verified fixes for this code.
Restore Default Settings changes settings without deleting user or game data, whereas Initialize PS4 erases them. When to contact PlayStation Support
Stop local troubleshooting when the purchasing account clearly owns the game, any required subscription is active, PSN status is normal, and license restoration plus primary activation have failed. Also escalate if you cannot sign in, suspect account compromise, or the padlock returns across multiple restarts. Sony’s NP-34958-9 page directs users to PlayStation Support when the error continues.
