Reports that the Elgato HD60 X suddenly will not record, produces crackling audio, or stutters are credible, but they do not establish one universal hardware defect. Elgato has documented and fixed earlier firmware problems, while current failures can also come from Windows 11 audio processing, OBS settings, HDMI formats, USB connections, GPU encoding, or a failing unit. The fastest route to a diagnosis is to separate the symptom, test with a second capture application, and change one variable at a time.
What can fail on an HD60 X?
“Stuttering” describes several different faults. Identify which one you have before changing settings.

A smooth television or monitor does not prove the computer-side capture path is healthy: HDMI passthrough and USB capture use different parts of the device.
What Elgato has officially acknowledged
Elgato’s 4K Capture Utility 1.7.7 release notes document an HD60 X firmware update that addressed several historical problems:

- Captured audio that could stutter or break.
- Audio and video losing sync after an HDMI-signal change, including HDR switching.
- EDID timing and compatibility improvements, including 1440p120 passthrough cases.
- HDR recording failures and a false “recording already in progress” message.
Those notes prove that these failure modes existed and were targeted by a firmware update. They do not prove that every current report has the same cause. Check firmware through Elgato’s current HD60 X support hub before attempting more invasive changes.
Run this controlled troubleshooting sequence
Use the same HDMI source, resolution, recording length, and file destination after each change. That makes it possible to tell which fix mattered.
- Update firmware and software. Install the current supported Elgato software and verify the device is recognized before testing.
- Test outside OBS. Make a short recording in Elgato Studio or another supported application. If it works there, investigate OBS rather than replacing the card.
- Simplify the signal. Temporarily disable HDR, VRR, 1440p120, surround audio, and other advanced modes. Re-test at a conservative stereo signal.
- Check Windows 11 processing. Follow Settings → System → Sound → Advanced → All sound devices → Capture Device → Audio enhancements: Off. This is Elgato’s specific fix for Windows 11 crackling; it will not repair video-frame drops or a failed recording file.
- Set console audio to stereo PCM. On Xbox, Elgato documents Settings → General → Volume & audio output → HDMI audio → Stereo uncompressed. Other consoles use different labels, but the diagnostic principle is the same: test stereo PCM instead of Dolby, bitstream, or surround.
- Check USB. Use a known-good USB 3.x data cable, connect directly to a USB 3.x port, avoid an unpowered hub or dock, try another port, and temporarily disconnect other high-bandwidth devices.
- Try another computer or HDMI source. A fault that follows the HD60 X across applications, computers, cables, and sources is much stronger evidence of hardware trouble.
Windows and OBS audio checks
OBS on Windows
Elgato’s audio troubleshooting guide says to open the capture-device properties, confirm the intended input (such as HDMI), scroll down, enable Use Custom Audio Device, and select the HD60 X from the list. This is particularly useful when video appears but the OBS mixer is silent.

Some users report clean audio when the HD60 X is added only as an audio source and crackling when the video source is also added. That pattern points toward an application or scene interaction, not proof of a universal OBS or hardware defect. Test a new scene containing only one HD60 X source before changing filters or plugins.
OBS on macOS
Audio routing differs on macOS. Some Elgato capture workflows require manually adding an Audio Input Capture source. Do not assume Windows instructions or older model guides use the same labels; verify the current HD60 X instructions in Elgato’s support hub and test in Elgato Studio as a comparison.
Capture an OBS log while the fault occurs
- Restart OBS.
- Start a recording or preview and let the problem reproduce for at least 30 seconds.
- Stop the recording.
- Choose Help → Log Files → Upload Current Log File.
- Save the generated URL for support or forum diagnosis.
The log can reveal dropped frames, encoder overload, device errors, and timing problems that a description such as “it stutters” cannot distinguish.

If recording suddenly stopped working
A community discussion links some recent 4K Capture Utility failures to changes in NVIDIA driver 591 and older NVENC controls. That is a user-reported explanation, not an official universal diagnosis. Elgato’s 4K Capture Utility documentation confirms that supported workflows use NVIDIA’s NVENC function.

Where available, switch from NVENC/GPU encoding to software (CPU) encoding. A driver rollback can be an advanced, temporary diagnostic step, but document the original driver and have a restoration plan; do not treat it as a guaranteed fix.
If audio stutters while video is smooth
- Disable Windows 11 audio enhancements using the exact path above.
- Use stereo PCM at the source and retest without surround or bitstream output.
- Check OBS’s custom audio-device setting and sample-rate consistency.
- Try a direct USB 3.x connection and another cable.
- Compare Elgato Studio, OBS, and a minimal OBS scene.
If the same audio breakup occurs in multiple applications and on another computer, hardware or the HDMI signal path becomes more plausible. If it disappears when the video source is removed from one OBS scene, software configuration remains the leading explanation.

If video preview or recordings stutter too
Watch OBS’s dropped-frame and rendering statistics while reproducing the issue. Reduce the scene to the HD60 X source, remove browser sources and filters, and test a lower-complexity signal. Then repeat with HDR, VRR, and 1440p120 disabled. A report of preview stutter after roughly 30 seconds does not by itself identify the card; OBS load, USB bandwidth, GPU scheduling, and the game capture path can all produce similar behavior.

Replacement or Elgato support is reasonable when all of the following are true:

- The fault appears in Elgato software, OBS, and another capture application.
- It survives firmware updates, a known-good USB 3.x cable, and multiple direct ports.
- It occurs with more than one HDMI source or on another computer.
- The device disconnects, repeatedly resets, or fails to enumerate.
Do not condemn the card solely because passthrough is smooth, or replace it when disabling audio enhancements or changing one OBS scene resolves the problem.

HD60 X capabilities and limits
Elgato lists HDMI 2.0 input, USB-C 3.2 Gen 1 (5Gbps), VRR and HDR10 passthrough, and support for Elgato Studio, OBS, Meld, and other compatible applications on the product page. The device can pass through up to 2160p60, 1440p120, and 1080p240, but capture is limited to 2160p30, 1440p60, and 1080p60 HDR. Elgato’s technical specifications state that HDR capture is Windows-only. A 4K60 passthrough signal therefore does not mean 4K60 recording.
Should you buy an HD60 X in 2026?
Elgato currently labels the HD60 X discontinued while saying existing devices remain supported and that software and documentation are available. It was listed at $179.99 on Elgato’s U.S. page when checked; discontinued-stock pricing can change.

For an existing owner, troubleshoot before spending money. For a new buyer who needs 4K60 capture or wants the strongest long-term product position, the newer 4K X is the more appropriate Elgato choice; for inexpensive 1080p60, a discounted HD60 X can still be adequate if it passes the cross-application tests above.
