Fortnite Chapter 3 Season 2 (v20.00) launched on March 20, 2022. Some PC players then reported crashes, freezes and DirectX errors, especially when using DirectX 12. The timing makes the update a reasonable suspect, but it does not prove that every crash was one universal Epic bug. A major patch can change shaders, rendering code, memory use and asset files, exposing a driver, overlay, thermal or hardware-stability problem.
Work through the tests below in order: identify the failure type, verify the installation, test another renderer, refresh the graphics driver and shader cache, then investigate overlays and system stability. Change one variable at a time so you know which result matters.
First identify what “crashing” means

Record the exact error before changing anything. Note whether it mentions DirectX 11, DirectX 12, D3D12, DXGI_ERROR_DEVICE_REMOVED, EXCEPTION_ACCESS_VIOLATION or Unreal Engine; when the failure occurs; your GPU, Windows version and renderer; and whether only Fortnite closes. Epic recommends searching the exact message because individual errors can have separate guidance: Epic error-message support.

1. Verify Fortnite’s files
- Open Epic Games Launcher and select Library.
- Open Fortnite’s three-dot menu and choose Manage.
- Select Verify and wait for the scan and repair to finish.
- Restart Fortnite and test the same activity that previously crashed.
Verification replaces missing or damaged installation files. It cannot repair a GPU driver, overlay, overheating or an unstable overclock. Epic’s general sequence is documented at Epic PC crash troubleshooting.

2. Test a different rendering mode
If the error mentions DX12 or the game crashes before reaching settings, rendering mode is the most informative next test. If you can open Fortnite, select Settings → Video → Rendering Mode, choose Performance Mode, restart and test. Epic’s current graphics guidance says Performance Mode can help when DirectX 12 causes crashes, freezes or black screens: Epic graphics troubleshooting.
If Fortnite will not reach the menu, Epic’s current instructions use the launcher’s Fortnite-specific Additional Command Line Arguments field with -d3d12 -es31. Launcher labels and command-line behavior can change, so follow the current Epic page rather than assuming the 2022 interface is identical. Test one renderer at a time. Performance Mode may reduce image quality, effects or frame-time consistency; success identifies a useful workaround, not the root cause.
3. Update or clean-reinstall the graphics driver
- Identify the GPU in Task Manager, Device Manager or
dxdiag. - Download the driver from the manufacturer, not a driver-updater utility.
- Install the current stable release and restart Windows.
- Retest Fortnite before reinstalling the game.
Official downloads: NVIDIA, AMD and Intel. Use a clean-install option when the installer provides one. If the crash began immediately after a driver update, a rollback is a diagnostic option, not a universal recommendation. Intel separately documents a Fortnite DX12 fix for a specific Intel Arc issue in driver 31.0.101.5074 and newer; that does not generalize to NVIDIA, AMD or every Fortnite build: Intel’s Arc support note.

4. Clear the DirectX shader cache
Season updates can leave a cache that no longer matches the game or driver. Clearing it forces a rebuild. Close Fortnite, then delete the contents (not the parent folders) of the cache location that exists on your system:

Skip files Windows says are in use. Paths vary by driver version. The first match afterward may stutter while shaders compile again, which Epic explains at Epic’s DirectX 12 guidance.
5. Disable overlays and background utilities
Temporarily disable Discord, NVIDIA or AMD overlays, Xbox Game Bar, MSI Afterburner/RivaTuner, capture software, RGB tools and monitoring utilities. If Fortnite becomes stable, re-enable them individually to find a reproducible conflict. This is a compatibility test, not proof that any particular overlay caused the historical update problem.

Additional checks when crashes continue
Lower load and check temperatures
Use Quality Presets: Low, keep 3D Resolution at 100%, disable hardware ray tracing, cap the frame rate and test borderless or windowed mode. Clean vents and confirm fans operate normally. If lower load prevents a delayed crash, investigate temperatures, VRAM pressure, power delivery or an unstable factory/owner overclock; powerful hardware can still be unstable. Select the dedicated GPU on a laptop
For NVIDIA laptops, open NVIDIA Control Panel → Manage 3D Settings → Program Settings, select Fortnite and choose the high-performance GPU. AMD systems expose an equivalent Fortnite High Performance choice under Radeon switchable-graphics settings. This applies to multi-GPU laptops, not every desktop crash.
Clear the Epic Games Launcher cache
After verification, use Epic’s current launcher-cache procedure. Folder names and locations can change, so use the instructions in Epic’s troubleshooting article rather than deleting arbitrary folders.

Run the launcher as administrator once
Right-click Epic Games Launcher and choose Run as administrator, then retest. This can expose a permissions problem but will not repair drivers, heat, hardware or a server outage. Do not treat permanent elevation as a general fix.

Reinstall Fortnite, or try another drive, only after verification, renderer, driver, cache, overlay and stability tests. Reinstallation consumes time and bandwidth, does not repair a driver or hardware fault, and can reproduce the same bad interaction when the update is downloaded again. Epic’s escalation sequence also places launcher/game reinstall later: Epic PC crash troubleshooting. Never delete executable or engine files as a first-line “DX12 fix”; use official settings, arguments and verification instead.

- Multiple players on different hardware report the same error immediately after the same patch.
- Epic posts a known issue or ships a hotfix.
- The crash disappears after a Fortnite update without any local change.
- Only one game mode fails while others work, suggesting mode-specific assets or gameplay code.
Player reports can reveal patterns, including DX12 or Windows 11 correlations, but they do not establish prevalence or causation. Contemporary examples include DX12 reports and Windows 11 reports. A server outage usually causes connection or matchmaking errors, not a local process disappearing with a DirectX or Unreal error.

Escalate with complete logs
Collect logs immediately after a crash, before launching repeatedly. Epic’s procedure is at Epic log collection guidance.
- Press Windows + R, enter
dxdiag, press Enter and choose Save All Information. - Press Windows + R, enter
msinfo32, then use File → Save. - Press Windows + R, enter
%localappdata%/FortniteGame/Saved/Logsand collect the relevant Fortnite logs. - Attach the files to Epic Support as instructed; do not ZIP or RAR them for the submission described by Epic.
A full reboot, blue screen or repeated system freeze warrants separate Windows Event Viewer, memory, power-supply and hardware-stability investigation. Do not buy a new GPU or reinstall Windows based solely on one Fortnite crash.
