On February 26, 2025, Google announced a Chromebook-specific x86 version of Roblox and said it could deliver up to twice the performance on x86 Chromebooks. That is a maximum claim, not a promise that every Chromebook or Roblox experience will run twice as fast. Google’s published examples show gains that vary by game, and the announcement does not establish that ARM-based Chromebooks receive the same improvement.
What changed in Roblox on Chromebooks?
Google’s ChromeOS team said Roblox was rolling out an x86 version built specifically for Chromebooks. The change concerns software optimization for compatible Chromebook hardware; it is not a hardware upgrade and does not turn Roblox into a Windows or Linux desktop app. Google describes it as an effort to optimize Roblox for a wider range of Chromebook hardware. Google’s February 26, 2025 announcement does not specify the update’s exact packaging or say that it is a browser client.
How much faster did Google say it was?
Google’s figures are its published measurements, not independent testing or a guarantee for every device. Frame-rate changes are increases; loading and launch changes are reductions in time.

A 99% frame-rate increase is approximately a doubling, while 67% is a smaller gain. A cold launch means starting the app when it is not already running; a hot launch returns to or reopens an app state with more resources cached. Google did not publish a complete device test matrix in the announcement, so these results should not be treated as predictions for a particular Chromebook.

Which Chromebooks are in scope?
The stated performance claim applies to x86 Chromebooks. Intel- and AMD-based Chromebook processors are generally x86; Qualcomm, MediaTek, and other ARM-based models are not. The announcement does not give a complete supported-device list, and its x86 claim is not evidence that Roblox became slower or unsupported on ARM.
Check the processor architecture rather than relying on the Chromebook name or a Chromebook Plus label. Even among x86 models, processor generation, graphics capability, memory, cooling, power conditions, and the experience being played can affect results. Google did not state a minimum RAM or ChromeOS version for this update.

Is this a new desktop or browser version?
The confirmed description is a Chromebook-specific x86 build. Google’s announcement does not establish that it is a new browser client, Linux application, or Windows-style desktop port. An earlier Google overview of Chromebook apps described Roblox as a Google Play Chromebook game, but that older account does not verify the technical packaging of the 2025 x86 update.

Do Chromebook owners need to install anything?
The announcement describes a rollout but does not give an exact schedule, manual installation procedure, user-facing update path, or minimum ChromeOS version. Keep ChromeOS and Roblox updated through the official channels available on your Chromebook. If you do not see the improved build, your device may be outside the x86 target or the rollout may not be available to your installation; Google’s announcement does not provide a way to force it.

Why can Roblox still lag on an x86 Chromebook?
The optimization does not guarantee a particular frame rate or fix every cause of lag. Roblox experiences vary in rendering demands and asset loads, as Google’s different results for Adopt Me! and Brookhaven RP illustrate. Low memory, weaker integrated graphics, thermal limits, or competing browser tabs and apps can also constrain a device. Faster local rendering cannot resolve Wi-Fi congestion, high network latency, or server-side delays.
- Update ChromeOS and Roblox, then restart the Chromebook.
- Close unnecessary tabs and apps that may be using memory or processor time.
- If a particular experience stutters, reduce its graphics settings where available.
- Compare performance on battery and while plugged in; power and heat conditions can affect sustained performance.
Optional Hyper-Threading setting
Google documents a ChromeOS setting that can affect application and game performance, but it is off by default because Google identifies security risks. It is an optional troubleshooting step, not part of the Roblox update, and may not be available or appropriate on every device. Managed school or work Chromebooks may restrict access. - Open Chrome and enter
chrome://flags#scheduler-configuration. - Next to Scheduler Configuration, choose Enables Hyper-Threading on relevant CPUs.
- Select Restart to apply the change.
To undo it, return to the same setting, choose Default, and restart. Experimental flags can change or disappear, and the setting carries Google’s stated security trade-off.
What about the Chromebook-themed Roblox items?
Google’s announcement also described a Chrome-themed jetpack for Roblox avatars and the “Chromebook Cruiser” in Bloxburg, which unlocks a hoverboard. The February 2025 announcement does not establish whether either item can still be redeemed in September 2026.

Should you buy a Chromebook for Roblox?
The x86 optimization may help an owner of a compatible Chromebook without requiring a hardware purchase, but Google’s headline figure alone is not a sound reason to buy a particular model. If Roblox is a major reason for buying, assess the processor architecture, memory, graphics capability, and cooling of the specific device. A high-refresh display does not itself make Roblox render faster, and a stronger gaming-oriented computer may be a better fit for buyers seeking predictable local gaming performance.
