Try each clue before reading the solutions. The colors correspond to the puzzle’s four groups, ordered here from the more approachable clue to the trickiest wordplay.
- Yellow: Think about writing something down or putting it on a page.
- Green: What do you need to play a classic game of luck?
- Blue: Look for heroes from action-movie franchises.
- Purple: Add a word that rhymes with “thick” to complete a compound.

Blue — HEROES OF ACTION MOVIE FRANCHISES
BOND, JONES, OCEAN and WICK point to James Bond, Indiana Jones, Danny Ocean and John Wick. OCEAN is the less immediate fit: it refers to Danny Ocean, while the other three names are more readily recognized as action-franchise heroes.
Purple — ___STICK
Add a word before “stick” to make CANDLESTICK, CHOPSTICK, JOYSTICK and YARDSTICK. WICK may draw attention to CANDLE, but the purple connection is the completed compound, not a candle-related group.

How Connections works
Connections is a free daily word game from The New York Times. Players sort 16 words into four groups of four; the group colors indicate relative difficulty, and four incorrect guesses end the game. The rules and puzzle answers are described in Forbes’ May 7, 2025 guide.
