Google Search marked Minecraft’s 15th anniversary in May 2024 with a small interactive Easter egg: searching for Minecraft could reveal a grass-block button on the results page, then let users mine parts of that page. It was a Search-page mini-game, not a full version of Minecraft or a Google Doodle. The feature was tied to the 2024 celebration, and its availability today is not confirmed.
What Google added to Search
Contemporary coverage described a grass block near the bottom of the results page. Selecting it brought up a Minecraft-style hand resembling Steve’s, and parts of the page—including the Knowledge Panel, search results and Google News results—could be targeted and “mined.” Blocks broke with an animation and revealed Minecraft-themed visuals and effects. 9to5Google’s May 16, 2024 report documented the interaction.
This was a playful layer over Google Search, not Minecraft Java Edition, Bedrock Edition or Minecraft Classic. It did not provide a survival world, crafting, inventory, multiplayer or a downloadable save.

How to try the Easter egg
- Open Google Search, preferably at Google.com.
- Search for Minecraft and let the results page load.
- Look near the bottom of the page for the grass-block control.
- Select the block to start the interaction, then click or tap eligible parts of the page to mine them.
The plain “Minecraft” query is the best-documented trigger; reports about other Minecraft-related searches varied. Contemporary reporting said it appeared on desktop and mobile Search, but controls and availability were not guaranteed to be identical across devices or interfaces.

If the grass block does not appear
The Easter egg may have been retired or changed since its 2024 promotion. If you want to rule out a browser or interface issue, try Google.com in a desktop browser, another browser or a private window; check that JavaScript is enabled and temporarily disable restrictive script-blocking extensions. These are troubleshooting ideas, not guaranteed fixes. A Google app, embedded search box, personalized results layout, region or device may behave differently from the original reported experience.
Why the anniversary was May 17
Minecraft’s official anniversary material identifies May 17, 2009, as the release date of the early Cave Game version that became Minecraft—not the date of the later full commercial release. Google’s Easter egg was reported on May 16, 2024, one day before the anniversary date. Minecraft’s anniversary cape announcement refers to both the Cave Game milestone and the Google Search surprise.

How Google’s feature fit into Minecraft’s wider celebration
The Search Easter egg was one promotional tie-in, separate from Mojang’s official anniversary campaign. Minecraft advertised 15 consecutive days of surprises from May 15 through May 29, 2024, alongside activities that included discounts on some Minecraft-related games, Bedrock Character Creator items, anniversary capes, Twitch and TikTok promotions, and a free add-on and map. Availability varied by region or platform, and those were limited-time 2024 offers. The official 15th-anniversary announcement describes the campaign.

The feature’s May 2024 launch is documented, but the available official material does not confirm that it remains active in 2026. Minecraft’s anniversary page describes a 2024 campaign, and Google Search features can be temporary; for example, a Google Search Community discussion reports that an older pinball Easter egg was removed. If the Minecraft control is missing now, that does not mean the original reports were false—it may simply no longer be available, or may not appear in your version of Search.

The original interaction was presented within Search and did not require a download. Avoid unofficial extensions, APKs or “unlockers” claiming to restore it; buying Minecraft is not necessary to try a Search Easter egg.
