Verdict: The widely repeated RTX 5080 price-hike rumor did not become NVIDIA’s official U.S. price. A December 2024 report cited an alleged Australian retailer list showing an ASUS Prime RTX 5080 at A$2,799—roughly US$1,500 at the time—but NVIDIA launched the GeForce RTX 5080 on January 30, 2025, with a U.S. starting price of $999. More expensive board-partner cards, regional taxes, shortages, tariffs and reseller markups can still push checkout prices well above $999, but those prices are not proof that NVIDIA raised the Founders Edition MSRP.
What the original RTX 5080 price rumor said
On December 27, 2024, a report said an Australian retailer’s alleged internal price list showed an ASUS Prime RTX 5080 at A$2,799. The report estimated that at about US$1,500 and compared it with the RTX 4080’s $1,199.99 launch price. The evidence was an unattributed photograph or screenshot relayed through a creator or leaker, and the report itself treated the figure as unconfirmed.
The report appeared to concern specific ASUS Prime cards, not every RTX 5080 model and not necessarily NVIDIA’s Founders Edition. Read the original account at Android Headlines.
What that figure did not establish
- It did not establish a U.S. MSRP.
- It did not show that every RTX 5080 would cost A$2,799.
- It did not identify whether the figure included Australian GST, distributor costs or a retailer markup.
- It did not prove that the price list was final launch pricing.
- It did not show what NVIDIA charged for a Founders Edition card.
Converting an Australian retail number into U.S. dollars is useful only as a rough scale comparison. Australian taxes, currency movements, distribution costs and regional margins mean the conversion cannot be treated as a U.S. price.

What NVIDIA actually announced
NVIDIA announced the desktop RTX 50 series on January 6, 2025. The RTX 5080 became available on January 30, 2025, with a U.S. starting price of $999. NVIDIA’s announcement is the authoritative source for that launch figure: NVIDIA GeForce RTX 50-series announcement.

The $999 wording matters: “starting at” describes the least expensive qualifying configuration or reference baseline. It does not promise that every custom card will sell for $999. NVIDIA’s RTX 5090 and RTX 5080 launch prices are also listed in its Blackwell announcement.
RTX 5080 specifications behind the speculation
The RTX 5080 uses NVIDIA’s Blackwell architecture and has 16GB of GDDR7 memory, up to 960GB/s of memory bandwidth, 10,752 CUDA cores, a 360W total graphics power rating and an 850W recommended system power supply. NVIDIA also claimed the RTX 5080 could be up to twice as fast as the RTX 4080 in selected gaming workloads using Blackwell features and DLSS 4. That is a vendor claim, not a universal native-raster result. The outcome depends on the game, resolution, ray-tracing settings, DLSS Super Resolution mode and whether Frame Generation or Multi Frame Generation is enabled.
Why an ASUS listing could be mistaken for an NVIDIA price
Graphics cards have several pricing layers that are easy to conflate.
NVIDIA’s starting price
The $999 figure is NVIDIA’s official U.S. reference for the RTX 5080 launch. It is the correct number to use when asking whether NVIDIA raised its own consumer MSRP.

Founders Edition
The Founders Edition is the cleanest reference for NVIDIA’s pricing. A premium custom design should not be used as evidence of a Founders Edition increase.
Board-partner pricing
ASUS, MSI, Gigabyte, PNY, ZOTAC and other partners can charge more for factory overclocks, larger coolers, vapor chambers, stronger power delivery, higher power limits, premium branding, bundles and local distribution costs. The leaked report apparently involved ASUS Prime models, so it could not establish the price of PNY, MSI, Gigabyte, Founders Edition or other RTX 5080 cards.
Street pricing
The checkout price can rise when launch inventory is scarce, the least expensive models sell out, resellers acquire stock, retailers add a margin, or taxes, tariffs and import costs differ by country. Did the RTX 5080 really launch at $1,500 in the United States?
No. The rumored A$2,799 figure was not the official U.S. launch price. NVIDIA launched the RTX 5080 at $999 starting in the United States. A particular Australian ASUS card, a premium U.S. AIB model or a shortage-era marketplace listing could cost substantially more, but each is a separate retail price that must be identified by model, seller, region and date.
A later retail-tracking report showed listings above MSRP and discussed tariffs as a possible source of pressure, but it did not prove a single cause for every higher price. How to judge an RTX 5080 listing
- Identify the exact model. Check whether it is Founders Edition, ASUS Prime, ASUS TUF, ROG Astral, MSI Suprim, Gigabyte AORUS or another design.
- Compare the premium with $999. The launch figure is a reference point, not a guarantee of current availability.
- Check the seller and warranty. Marketplace listings can differ in condition, return policy, shipping and authorized-warranty coverage.
- Separate tax-inclusive and tax-exclusive prices. Australian and European prices cannot be compared directly with a U.S. pre-tax MSRP.
- Check physical and power requirements. NVIDIA lists the Founders Edition at 304mm long, 137mm high and two slots; partner cards may be substantially larger. The specification page lists 360W total graphics power and an 850W recommended system power supply.
- Ask what performance is being promised. Determine whether a review or listing relies on native rendering, ray tracing, DLSS Super Resolution, Frame Generation or Multi Frame Generation.
Is an RTX 5080 worth buying?
Value depends on the actual checkout price and workload, not the rumor. The card is aimed at high-end 1440p and 4K gaming, ray tracing, DLSS-supported titles and GPU-accelerated creator or AI applications. Its 16GB of GDDR7 is a confirmed specification, but whether that is enough depends on resolution, texture settings, mods and future software.

When the RTX 5080 makes sense
- You want NVIDIA’s ray-tracing, DLSS and creator-feature ecosystem.
- Your games or applications benefit from Blackwell-specific features.
- Your case and power supply can handle the card and the price is close to the $999 reference.
- You are buying a custom model whose cooling, noise, dimensions or warranty justify its premium.
When to compare alternatives
- RTX 4080 Super: Consider it only if discounted or available used or refurbished at a meaningful saving. Its $999 launch MSRP is a historical benchmark, not a promise of current stock.
- RTX 5090: Its $1,999 launch price makes it relevant for buyers who need the highest consumer performance, but it is not a sensible substitute for a firm $1,000–$1,500 budget.
- Radeon cards: They may suit buyers prioritizing raster performance or a lower purchase price, but model-specific current prices and benchmark comparisons should be checked before buying.
- A prebuilt system: If standalone GPU markups approach the cost of a complete computer, compare the total system warranty, CPU, memory, storage and upgrade path. A July 2026 Tom’s Hardware archive entry reported one discounted RTX 5080-equipped CyberPowerPC system at $2,744, but that was a single deal snapshot, not a universal current price: Tom’s Hardware archive.
Examples of higher-priced custom cards
Commercial coverage published on May 2, 2026 displayed approximate listings of $1,369.99 for an ASUS Prime model, $1,595.99 for an ASUS TUF model and $1,843.99 for an ASUS ROG Astral model. Those figures are observed listing signals, not universal prices; stock, seller, shipping, condition and region can change them. Recheck the retailer before relying on any listing. Bottom line on the “huge price increase”
The rumor was about an unconfirmed Australian listing for a particular ASUS model, not proof of a U.S. NVIDIA MSRP. The RTX 5080 officially launched in the United States at $999 on January 30, 2025—the same nominal price as the RTX 4080 Super and below the RTX 4080’s $1,199.99 launch price. If a card costs far more, evaluate the exact AIB model, seller, region, taxes, stock conditions and warranty instead of treating the premium as an NVIDIA price increase.
