Best verified deal: Best Buy listed the white USB-C Backbone One 2nd Gen PlayStation Edition at $79.99, down from $99.99, in an August 2026 price check. Walmart showed Lightning 2nd Gen listings around $64.95–$67.99, but those offers were marketplace listings. The usual $99.99 price is normal list-price territory, not an especially strong sale. Most importantly, Lightning and USB-C models are not interchangeable: choose the connector for your phone before comparing discounts.
Prices and stock change quickly, so confirm the seller, condition, return policy and exact model on the product page before checkout.

The following snapshot separates retailer-sold new stock from marketplace offers. A lower number is not automatically the better deal if it comes with a weaker warranty or uncertain condition.

Which Backbone One fits your phone?
Connector choice comes before color, edition or price. The connector is built into the controller and cannot be swapped for another generation.

Cases and large camera bumps
Thick or rugged cases can stop the phone seating fully or put strain on the connector. Check case compatibility, remove the case if necessary, never force the phone into the grips, and test every control while the return period is still open.
Is the discount genuinely good?

What the Backbone One does—and what it does not
Wired controls without a controller battery
The Backbone One connects directly to the phone, avoiding Bluetooth pairing and a separate controller charging routine. It draws power from the phone and supports pass-through charging. Product-family listings also identify a 3.5mm headset jack on relevant models; confirm the jack and port arrangement for the exact variant at the time of purchase. The trade-off is that the phone remains physically attached and the controller is not a general wireless gamepad for a television or tablet.

Supported games and streaming
It can provide physical controls for controller-compatible iOS and Android games, Xbox Game Pass cloud gaming, Apple Arcade, GeForce NOW, Amazon Luna, PlayStation Remote Play, Xbox Remote Play and compatible PC streaming setups. Individual games and services must support a controller. Touch-only games, or games with incomplete controller mapping, will not become compatible simply because the Backbone app is installed. Subscriptions and game ownership
Basic controller operation does not require a Backbone+ subscription. Optional Backbone+ features, trials and benefits can change; declining a trial does not prevent basic software updates or compatibility management according to the PlayStation Direct listing. Separate services still have their own requirements: the controller does not include Xbox, PlayStation, Apple Arcade, GeForce NOW or Luna subscriptions, and Remote Play still requires the relevant console, account and setup.

When the Backbone One is a good purchase
- You want a pocketable controller mounted directly to your phone.
- You mainly play controller-supported games or stream from a console, PC or cloud service.
- Your phone matches the exact Lightning or USB-C model.
- You value a wired, low-setup connection more than wireless flexibility.
- The 2nd Gen price is near or below $80 and the seller is reputable.
When to skip it or choose another type
- You need a wireless controller that also works independently with a tablet, PC, TV or console.
- You have a very large phone or rugged case that cannot clear the grips.
- You want full-size ergonomics, Hall-effect sticks or extensive adjustability.
- Your favorite games do not support physical controllers.
- The Backbone price is close to a newer, more capable controller that better matches your use.
A cheaper wired controller may reduce app integration, fit refinement and support. A full-size Bluetooth controller with a phone clip offers broader device use and more traditional ergonomics, but adds pairing, charging and a less compact setup. Premium mobile controllers can improve case support, wireless operation or stick durability at higher cost and weight.
Marketplace and open-box checks
Before treating a low price as a bargain, inspect the listing for:
- Exact connector, edition, color and generation.
- New, refurbished or open-box condition.
- Named seller and whether the retailer or marketplace seller fulfills the order.
- Warranty coverage and the actual return window.
- Included adapters, cable or other accessories.
- Whether any Backbone+ trial is included and when it expires.
Walmart’s observed Lightning offers came from marketplace vendors, so the displayed price should not be presented as an official Walmart-sold promotion. Sale inventory can also disappear: indexed versions of Backbone’s own page showed conflicting price and stock signals.

- Identify your phone model and confirm whether its port is Lightning or USB-C.
- Run the phone through Backbone’s compatibility information, especially on Android.
- Choose standard, PlayStation or Xbox styling based on preference—not assumed game access.
- Confirm 1st Gen versus 2nd Gen in the title, photos and model details.
- Check case clearance and camera-bump geometry.
- Record the seller, condition, warranty and return deadline.
- Compare the final delivered price with the $99.99 reference, not just the claimed percentage discount.
- Test fit, buttons, sticks, triggers, headset audio and pass-through charging immediately after delivery.
Who should buy at today’s observed prices?
- iPhone 14 or older: a Lightning 2nd Gen around $65–$70 is attractive if the marketplace seller, warranty and returns are trustworthy.
- USB-C iPhone or Android: the $79.99 USB-C 2nd Gen PlayStation Edition is a meaningful discount and a sensible purchase for compatible phones.
- PlayStation owners: choose the PlayStation Edition for its styling and convenient Remote Play setup, not because it includes PlayStation games.
- Budget shoppers: investigate sub-$60 listings carefully; a small extra payment for verified new stock can be worthwhile.
- Wireless or full-size enthusiasts: compare a Bluetooth controller with a phone mount or the more expensive Backbone Pro before choosing the compact wired design.
At $99.99, buy the Backbone One because its connector, size and wired simplicity specifically suit you—not because the listing claims a sale. At $79.99 or less for a new 2nd Gen from a dependable seller, the value proposition is substantially stronger.
