The GameSir Pocket Taco is a $34.99 Bluetooth controller that clamps to the bottom of a phone, putting a D-pad and Game Boy-style buttons beneath the screen in portrait orientation. It can make compatible retro games feel more like a handheld, but it is a controller—not a Game Boy, an emulator, or a bundle of games. Its best fit is a player who wants portrait retro gaming and is willing to check game and screen-layout compatibility.
What the Pocket Taco is—and what it is not
The Pocket Taco connects to a phone over Bluetooth and attaches below it. The phone remains the display and runs the game or emulator. GameSir previously showed the device under the name Pocket 1; Pocket Taco is the name used for the product now. Android Authority’s announcement describes its portrait-oriented design and Bluetooth connection.
“Turns your phone into a Game Boy” describes the shape and feel of the setup, not a literal conversion: the controller is not Nintendo hardware, and the available product materials do not indicate that it includes Nintendo games, ROMs, or a complete emulator library. You supply compatible software and, where relevant, games you own or are otherwise authorized to use.
How the design changes the way you play
The phone sits above the controller, with the D-pad and ABXY buttons below the display. Start and Select buttons, plus four shoulder buttons, give it more controls than the original Game Boy’s two-button layout. That makes the arrangement more adaptable to systems and games that use extra face or shoulder inputs, though the lack of analog sticks rules out many games built around them.

The controller folds or closes for storage and comes with a PP storage box. Silicone pads cushion the phone-contact points. Bluetooth means there is no plug that has to line up with the phone’s port, and the hollow-bottom design is intended to leave that port accessible. Those details reduce some wired-controller hassles, but they do not guarantee that every phone, case, cable, or button placement will fit comfortably.

Specifications are listed by GameSir and Best Buy. Platform support means the controller can connect to those operating systems; it does not mean every game accepts every button or works well in portrait mode. The cited listings do not establish a universal phone-width or case-thickness limit.

Phone, game, and emulator compatibility
iPhone and Android
GameSir and retailer materials list iOS and Android compatibility over Bluetooth. This avoids dependence on a particular phone-port type or position, but software support remains game-specific. A title may ignore external controllers, accept only some inputs, or be designed for landscape play. Check the exact phone, operating-system version, case, game, and emulator you intend to use rather than treating platform compatibility as a guarantee.

The layout is most naturally suited to Game Boy, Game Boy Color, and Game Boy Advance-style play, as well as NES, SNES, arcade, and other games that work in portrait orientation or can be configured for it. The Pocket Taco supplies physical input; the phone supplies the emulator and display. Emulator apps differ in whether they support the controller and let you move or resize the game image.

That display control matters because the controller occupies the lower part of the phone. In its hands-on review, TechRadar found that some emulator apps could not position the game image clearly above the attached controller. A controller skin worked better in one iOS setup, but still left an unattractive black gap. Do not assume a screen-ratio setting in the GameSir app will reposition content in every other app.
Native mobile games and physical fit
Many native mobile games are landscape-only or lack external-controller support; in those cases, attaching the Pocket Taco may be of little use, and playing undocked gives up its distinctive portrait arrangement. A phone can also be awkward to mount if a thick case, rugged corners, protruding camera area, or side-button placement interferes with the clamp. The available specifications do not provide a reliable universal fit limit, so check the fit with your own handset and case.

How to connect and set it up
- Charge the controller using its USB-C port.
- Unfold or open it. Best Buy’s listing says it powers on when unfolded and powers off when closed.
- Open your phone’s Bluetooth settings and select the Pocket Taco device shown there. A manual mirror lists the legacy name “GameSir-Pocket 1_G”; the displayed name may vary by firmware or production batch. The manual is available at this mirror.
- Launch the game or emulator and check whether it detects the controller. If it does not, use that app’s controller settings to assign inputs where available.
- Install or open the GameSir app only if you need its supported features, such as remapping, firmware updates, or other listed settings.
If pairing or mapping goes wrong
- If the controller does not appear, close the GameSir app and first try pairing in the phone’s ordinary Bluetooth settings.
- Remove an old Pocket Taco or Pocket 1 Bluetooth entry, then try pairing again. Check that the controller is not already connected to another device.
- Open the controller again to trigger its stated automatic power-on behavior.
- If the app calls it a generic third-party controller, confirm that system-level Bluetooth pairing works before troubleshooting remapping or firmware features.
- Update firmware through the GameSir app only after the phone recognizes the controller. Do not rely on an unverified reset button combination.
- If buttons register but the game image is blocked, check the emulator’s own portrait, display-position, and screen-size options. That is a separate issue from Bluetooth pairing.
TechRadar reported an instance where the iOS app did not identify the controller correctly. That is a reviewer-reported compatibility issue, not proof that every iPhone setup will fail.

How the controls feel, and where they fall short
The D-pad and ABXY buttons use membranes, while the shoulder controls use tactile switches. There are no analog sticks. Pocket Gamer described the hardware as solid and useful as a standalone Bluetooth pad; TechRadar found it responsive and reported no noticeable input delay in its own testing. Those are review impressions, not a measured latency figure or a guarantee across phones and games.

Membrane controls generally offer a softer feel than clicky or microswitch controls, and the missing sticks limit the Pocket Taco for games that require analog movement or camera control. The portrait layout is the point for Game Boy-like play, but it can be a poor match for a landscape game even when that game recognizes the buttons. Pocket Gamer also raised a concern about how the bracket might hold up over extended use; a short review cannot establish long-term durability.
Who should buy it?
- Retro-focused player: A good candidate if you want lightweight physical controls for compatible portrait or retro-style games and are prepared to configure the software.
- Emulation newcomer: A conditional fit. The hardware is only part of the setup; you also need suitable software, legally usable games, and an emulator that displays correctly with the controller attached.
- General mobile gamer: Probably look elsewhere if most of your play is landscape-oriented, needs analog sticks, or depends on native games with inconsistent controller support.
- Player seeking a complete Game Boy replacement: Consider a dedicated retro handheld instead. It gives you an integrated screen and controls without covering part of your phone, though it means carrying another device.
- Traveler wanting a small accessory: Its 62.2g weight, folding design, Bluetooth connection, and included storage box make the controller easy to carry; the phone remains the larger part of the setup.

Verdict
The Pocket Taco’s appeal is specific: a light Bluetooth controller that makes compatible portrait games feel more handheld. At its cited U.S. list price of $34.99, it is worth considering if that is the experience you want and you are comfortable checking fit, game support, and display layout. It is a weaker choice for all-purpose mobile gaming or for anyone expecting an out-of-the-box Game Boy library.
