Short answer: The European Union did not issue a published final order simply titled “lift the Epic Games Store ban.” Apple terminated Epic Games Sweden’s developer account on March 6, 2024, the European Commission opened scrutiny under the Digital Markets Act (DMA), and Apple committed to reinstate the account on March 8. Epic then launched its alternative iPhone marketplace in the EU on August 16, 2024. That is different from restoring Fortnite to Apple’s App Store worldwide.
What Apple actually blocked
“Apple banned the Epic Games Store” compresses several separate disputes into one phrase.
- August 2020: Apple removed Fortnite from the App Store after Epic added an unauthorized in-app payment option. That conflict became the separate Epic Games v. Apple litigation.
- March 6, 2024: Apple terminated the developer account of Epic Games Sweden AB. Epic needed that account to build and distribute its planned alternative marketplace in Europe.
- August 16, 2024: Epic launched its mobile store in the EU as an alternative marketplace, not as an App Store listing.
- 2025: Fortnite returned to the U.S. iPhone App Store through a separate U.S. legal track. That was not the DMA event that enabled Epic’s EU marketplace.

The Commission’s role is best described as regulatory pressure and intervention. The available record supports Apple’s voluntary commitment to reverse the termination after the Commission sought information; it does not show a final published order specifically commanding Apple to reinstate Epic’s account. Why the Digital Markets Act mattered
Apple is a DMA gatekeeper for services including iOS and the App Store. The central provision here is Article 6(4), which requires effective avenues for app distribution outside Apple’s store, including alternative marketplaces and, within the applicable framework, web distribution. The Commission explains the model in its app-distribution guidance.
Other DMA obligations are relevant but are not the same as the right to operate a marketplace:

- Article 5(4): steering users toward alternative purchasing channels.
- Article 5(7): not forcing Apple’s in-app payment system to be the only option.
- Article 6(12): fair, reasonable and nondiscriminatory access conditions for business users.
Those rules created a legal route for Epic’s store; they did not name Epic or guarantee that every proposed marketplace would be accepted without eligibility, compliance, security or fee requirements.
How Epic’s store reaches an iPhone
Epic’s marketplace is installed from Epic’s website, then authorized in iOS or iPadOS settings. It is not a normal App Store download and does not mean Apple approved the store for worldwide listing. Epic also announced distribution through independent mobile stores such as AltStore PAL.

Who can install it now?
Epic’s current support documentation, checked for the August 16, 2026 status, lists this availability:

“Europe” is not a substitute for “EU.” The United Kingdom, Switzerland, Norway and other non-EU countries should not be assumed to qualify. Epic’s region rules are documented here. Someone who leaves the EU may continue using an already installed marketplace for a limited period, but Epic says updates stop after 30 days; new installations outside supported regions are unavailable.

Device and software requirements
Epic’s installation page changes as Apple’s operating-system versions and screens change. It currently lists an iOS/iPadOS 18.6-and-later flow, a newer iOS/iPadOS 26.2-and-later path, older EU support beginning at iOS 17.6, and iPadOS 18 or later for iPad installation. Japan has a separate minimum-version rule. Check the live Epic instructions for the exact requirement shown for your device before troubleshooting.

- Open
epicgames.comin Safari on the iPhone or iPad. - Choose Install and follow the marketplace prompt.
- If iOS says the device is not configured for Epic marketplaces, open Settings.
- Select Allow Apps from Epic Games Inc. and confirm.
- Return to the browser and confirm installation.
- Approve the final device-side confirmation, including the side-button prompt where iOS requests it.
- Open Epic Games Store from the Home Screen.
Labels vary by iOS and iPadOS version, so use Epic’s current support page rather than treating this sequence as universal.

If the install prompt does not appear
- Outside the EU or Japan: the supported marketplace prompt may not be offered.
- Old software: update iOS or iPadOS if the hardware supports the required version.
- Permission denied: return to Settings and enable the Epic marketplace permission.
- On iPad in Japan: Epic’s support page says the marketplace is not available there.
- Different interface: follow the live version-specific instructions linked above.
What this changed—and what it did not
What changed
- EU iPhone and iPad users gained a supported marketplace route outside Apple’s App Store.
- Epic could distribute Fortnite and other Epic titles through that route.
- iOS distribution in the EU was no longer exclusively tied to Apple’s marketplace.
What did not change
- The Epic Games Store did not become available worldwide on iOS.
- EU access did not put Fortnite back in Apple’s App Store everywhere.
- Apple still operates notarization, eligibility, technical controls and permission screens for alternative distribution.
- Alternative distribution is not automatically free of Apple requirements, fees or commercial disputes.
Apple says alternative distribution creates additional privacy, malware, fraud, piracy and content-moderation risks, while Epic presents the opening as a necessary competitive choice. Apple’s current developer explanation is at developer.apple.com/support/dma-and-apps-in-the-eu.
The Apple–EU fight continued after Epic’s launch
On April 23, 2025, the Commission announced preliminary findings that Apple’s alternative-distribution contracts raised DMA problems involving the Core Technology Fee, strict eligibility conditions and a burdensome installation process. Preliminary findings are not a final infringement decision; they should not be described as a definitive ruling that every Apple fee or term was illegal. Separately, the EU General Court’s July 8, 2026 judgment dismissed Apple’s action challenging its gatekeeper designation for iOS and the App Store. That decision reinforces the DMA framework, but it was not the event that restored Epic’s account in March 2024. See the Court’s press release at curia.europa.eu.

What Fortnite’s return means in practice
For an eligible EU user, Fortnite can be obtained through Epic’s alternative marketplace. That is a different distribution channel from the App Store. A statement that “Fortnite is back on iPhone” needs a country and channel attached: EU access through Epic’s store, Japan’s iPhone availability under Epic’s listed rules, and the later U.S. App Store development are separate stories.
The Bottom Line
The EU did not universally erase an Apple ban. DMA scrutiny helped secure the reinstatement of Epic Games Sweden’s developer account in March 2024, which enabled Epic’s alternative iOS marketplace to launch in the EU in August. In 2026, the store remains region-limited, requires supported software and extra permissions, and exists alongside—not inside—the Apple App Store.
