On January 13, 2021, Samsung Electronics America and Twitch announced a one-year partnership making Samsung Galaxy the exclusive mobile-device partner of Twitch Rivals North America. The plan combined mobile gaming competitions, creator programming and Galaxy 5G promotion; it was a sponsorship and content campaign, not a new gaming platform or an exclusive game service.
The announcement’s phrase “reinvent mobile gaming” described the partners’ ambition, not a demonstrated technical breakthrough. The available announcement establishes a 2021 program, but does not establish that the partnership continued beyond its stated one-year term.
What Samsung and Twitch Rivals announced
The agreement was between Samsung Electronics America and Twitch, with Twitch Rivals serving as the competitive-event and broadcast platform. Samsung Galaxy became Twitch Rivals North America’s exclusive mobile-device partner for the announced one-year term. The geographic scope matters: the announcement did not make Samsung the global device partner of every Twitch Rivals event.
Twitch Rivals is Twitch’s series of competitive events built around games, streamers and live broadcasts. Twitch described the format as events involving its partners and affiliates, with competition and streamer participation at the center of the programming (Twitch’s 2019 overview of Rivals). For Samsung, the format offered a way to put its phones into gaming broadcasts and tournaments, rather than relying only on conventional product advertising. That is an interpretation of the deal’s structure, not a separate contractual term.

“Exclusive mobile-device partner” referred to the sponsorship category. The announcement did not make games, streams or tournaments exclusive to Galaxy owners, nor did it describe a merger or game-development agreement.
What “reinvent mobile gaming” meant
The announced campaign had three main parts: mobile competitions, a recurring tournament series and creator-focused programming. Those were planned activations intended to promote mobile gaming and Galaxy devices, not evidence of a new technical standard or gaming service.

The announcement did not list every game or participating creator, publish a full schedule, or set out universal entry rules. Its description of the initiatives therefore establishes what the partners planned, not that every proposed event or benefit was delivered exactly as described.

Why Samsung and Twitch stood to benefit
Samsung’s objectives
Samsung presented the partnership as a way to showcase Galaxy performance and reach gaming audiences through Twitch Rivals. Regular tournaments and creator broadcasts could associate Galaxy phones with competitive play and put the devices in a social gaming context. The company’s stated pitch highlighted Galaxy 5G devices, displays and processing performance; those descriptions are Samsung’s marketing claims, not independent test results.
Twitch’s objectives
The arrangement gave Twitch Rivals a major smartphone sponsor and support for mobile-focused programming. Sports Business Journal characterized it as a sponsorship activating Galaxy phones through mobile gaming tournaments; it reported that financial terms were not disclosed (Sports Business Journal coverage).

What streamers and viewers could expect
For streamers, the planned formats meant opportunities to appear in tournaments and branded creator content. For viewers, they meant live broadcasts and interactive programming, with cash prizes confirmed as part of the Mobile Mondays description. The announcement does not establish that all streamers received phones or payment, or that every viewer or Galaxy owner qualified for a reward.
What Galaxy 5G had to do with the campaign
Samsung positioned its Galaxy 5G-enabled lineup as the hardware showcase, citing high-resolution displays, processing performance and the possibility that 5G could support lower-latency multiplayer gaming. The release did not provide a complete list of qualifying phone models, so it cannot establish that every Galaxy phone—or any particular model—was included.

5G does not guarantee lower ping or smoother play. Results depend on factors including signal strength, carrier and spectrum, network congestion, routing, distance to the game server, the game’s netcode and whether a player is using cellular data or Wi-Fi. A fast or low-latency connection is only one part of the experience; the phone, game and server also matter.
Nor did the sponsorship itself require every competitor to own a Galaxy phone. The announcement said the events would feature Galaxy devices but did not publish a universal device requirement. A specific event’s rules would be needed to determine who could enter and what equipment participants had to use.
What remains unknown—and whether it is still active
The announcement confirms the original one-year North American arrangement, but does not establish its continuation after that term. The Twitch Rivals page provides historical event context; historical listings do not by themselves prove a current Samsung relationship. As of September 2026, the cited material is not enough to describe Samsung as Twitch Rivals’ current exclusive mobile-device partner.

Other important details were not disclosed in the cited announcement: the Mobile Mondays prize amounts and full eligibility rules, a complete game and creator roster, a full event calendar, and the partnership’s financial terms. Without viewership, participation, sales or other outcome data, the announcement also cannot establish whether the campaign met its goals. Contemporary coverage summarized the announcement but does not fill those gaps (Android Headlines’ January 2021 report).
