Call of Duty: Warzone Mobile is no longer playable: Activision shut down its servers on April 17, 2026. That makes the Backbone One a bad buy if that is the only game you want it for. It may still be worth considering around $80 for Call of Duty: Mobile, other controller-supported games, or streaming—but only if you choose the right model for your phone.
Warzone Mobile is offline, even if you still have the app
Activision removed Warzone Mobile from the Apple App Store and Google Play in May 2025, then took its servers offline on April 17, 2026. The game depended on Activision’s online services, so an existing installation does not provide an offline way to play it. Its service-change notice also says that previously purchased content and unused COD Points are not refundable. Activision’s service-change notice has the shutdown details.
Backbone’s product page still mentions Warzone Mobile, but that is outdated promotional copy, not evidence the game can still be played. The later shutdown notice takes precedence over the older compatibility claim.
What an $80 price does—and doesn’t—tell you
A Best Buy search result showed a Backbone One model at $79.99, but that result was crawled about three months before August 18, 2026. It does not establish that the offer is live now, or that it applies to the connector and edition you need. Check the retailer listing for the current price, model, condition, stock, shipping, and return terms before buying.

For comparison, Backbone’s U.S. product-page result listed the Lightning 2nd-generation model at $99.99 when captured for the August 2026 information in this article. That is a dated listing, not a guaranteed current price. Confirm the exact edition and price on Backbone’s product page. An $80 price can be reasonable for a compatible controller you will use elsewhere; it is not a bargain for a game that has shut down.
Why Backbone One made sense for Warzone Mobile at launch
When Warzone Mobile was active, its movement, aiming, firing, and other console-style inputs made a physical controller a practical alternative to touchscreen controls. Backbone and Activision promoted controller support and their collaboration in March 2024. That historical fit explains older recommendations, but it cannot make the game available today. Backbone’s March 2024 announcement describes the partnership.

Call of Duty: Mobile is a separate option
Backbone lists Call of Duty: Mobile among controller-compatible games, and Activision points players toward it after Warzone Mobile’s shutdown. It is a separate title, not a renamed or revived Warzone Mobile. Do not assume that progress, purchases, or features transfer between the two. Check the game’s current availability and details at the official Call of Duty: Mobile page.
Controller support can vary by game and sometimes needs to be enabled in the game itself. Backbone’s controller-game FAQ says some games require switching from touchscreen controls or finishing a tutorial before controller input is available. If a game does not respond, verify its support and settings before assuming the controller is defective.

Choose the Backbone One that matches your phone
| Phone or device | What to check |
|---|---|
| Older iPhone with Lightning | Choose the Lightning Backbone One, then confirm the exact phone model fits. |
| USB-C iPhone | Choose the USB-C version. Backbone’s product page specifically directs iPhone 15 and 16-series buyers to USB-C models. |
| USB-C Android phone | Choose USB-C, but confirm compatibility for the exact phone; connector match alone does not guarantee fit or feature support. |
| Phone with a case, large camera bump, or unusual dimensions | Check fit requirements and whether the case must be removed before purchase. |
| Tablet or larger device | Verify physical fit; a telescoping phone controller may not accommodate it. |
Backbone’s product and compatibility information is the place to check the precise device and edition. Also confirm that the model supports the remote-play service you plan to use.

You do not need to treat Backbone+ as a requirement for ordinary local gameplay with a compatible controller-supported mobile game. Backbone says you can launch a supported game from the phone’s home screen without subscribing. Some Backbone-app integrations, including launching Xbox Cloud Gaming inside that app, may require Backbone+; that is separate from whether the physical controller can operate a game.

Cloud gaming and remote play have their own requirements. Xbox Cloud Gaming can be used without owning an Xbox console if you have the required Game Pass subscription; Xbox Remote Play requires an Xbox console. PlayStation Remote Play requires a compatible PlayStation console. Backbone’s console and cloud-use FAQ also notes edition differences for PlayStation Remote Play: Android users need the PlayStation Edition, while iOS users can use any Backbone One Edition according to that FAQ. Check current service, device, and edition requirements before relying on a setup.
The Backbone One is an input device, not a console, game license, or cloud subscription. If you want a different format, compare a Bluetooth Xbox controller with a phone clip, telescoping controllers from Razer or GameSir, or a dedicated handheld such as Steam Deck. These alternatives differ in fit and features; check the exact model rather than assuming a whole product line will suit your phone or games.

Quick checks if a game does not respond
- Confirm you bought the Lightning or USB-C version that matches your phone, and verify your exact phone model is supported.
- Update the phone’s operating system and, where applicable, the Backbone app or controller firmware.
- Try launching the game directly from the phone’s home screen, then look for a controller or input option in the game’s settings.
- Complete the game tutorial if controller input is not available at the start.
- Test another known controller-supported game. If it works there, the issue is likely specific to the first game’s support or settings.
