Analogue 3D is the premium way to play your original Nintendo 64 cartridges on a modern HDMI television. It recreates N64 hardware with an FPGA, outputs up to 4K, accepts original controllers and accessories, and now includes features such as Memories save states and screenshots after firmware updates. It is not an official Nintendo console, includes no games or controller, cannot connect directly to a CRT or 64DD, and costs $269.99 for the standard black or white model at Analogue’s store (price and stock checked August 18, 2026).
For someone with a cartridge collection and a 4K TV, it can reproduce the familiar ritual with far less display hassle than an aging N64. For a newcomer, the console is only the first expense.

What Analogue 3D is
Analogue 3D is an unofficial, N64-focused console built around programmable FPGA logic rather than conventional software emulation. Analogue calls it a “reimagining” of the Nintendo 64 and claims compatibility with the system’s 900-plus-game cartridge library. The neutral description is an FPGA-based hardware recreation: it implements N64 behavior in programmable hardware, but it is still recreating another machine rather than containing Nintendo’s original silicon.
The console has an original-style cartridge slot, four N64 controller ports, HDMI video, Bluetooth LE, Wi-Fi, USB, USB-C power and a microSD slot. It is region-free for original NTSC and PAL cartridges. Analogue is not affiliated with Nintendo; “4K N64” describes its video output, not an official Nintendo release or a remastered game library.

Analogue’s guide supports FAT32 or exFAT cards up to 1TB, although the supplied 16GB card is enough for normal operation. The official store is store.analogue.co. An 8BitDo 64 Bluetooth Controller was listed there at $39.99 in black or white and $44.99 in classic styling, putting a new buyer at about $309.98 before tax and shipping if a controller is also required.
What “4K” means in practice
Games remain original N64 software. Analogue 3D scales the console’s output to as much as 3840×2160 over HDMI; it does not add modern textures, widescreen code, or automatically increase the games’ native frame rates. A 1080p television is supported, so a 4K set is not mandatory.
- UHD 4K and FHD 1080p output
- 50 Hz modes for PAL use
- Digital CRT, PVM, BVM, scanline and clean display modes
- HDR controls on compatible displays
- ALLM support on HDMI 2.1 televisions
- Optional anti-aliasing, progressive-output beta and experimental overclocking
Analogue says 4K output and some display features require a screen accepting 4K at 50/60 Hz with 4:4:4 RGB. A television marketed as 4K may therefore fall back to 1080p. Enable Game Mode if the set does not respond to ALLM. CRT-style modes are digital filters on an HDMI display, not the same as driving an actual CRT.

Cartridges, controllers and accessories
Analogue documents support for official Nintendo-manufactured N64 cartridges from all regions and certain official reproduction cartridges, including cartridges with real-time clocks and SmartMedia readers. The 64DD cannot be directly mounted. The documentation does not establish universal compatibility with every EverDrive-style flash cartridge, bootleg or other unofficial reproduction, so those should be treated as case-by-case purchases rather than guaranteed.
Original controllers can use familiar accessories such as:
- Rumble Pak and Controller Pak
- Transfer Pak
- N64 Mouse and VRU/VRS
- Tsurikon 64 and ASCIIWHEEL 64
- Densha de Go 64 Controller and Bio Sensor
Physical Paks require an original controller with the relevant accessory slot. Wireless controllers use virtual Pak functionality, which Analogue limits to player one. The 8BitDo 64 controller must be updated and placed in D-mode before pairing. Firmware 1.2.0 also added support for Nintendo Switch Online N64 controllers and improved 8BitDo N64 Mod Kit support. See Analogue’s compatible-media guide and firmware 1.2.0 notes.

Save states arrived through firmware
Current coverage must account for updates. Firmware 1.3.0, released May 15, 2026, introduced Memories, which capture and reload gameplay without reaching an in-game save point or using an original Controller Pak. Analogue says Memories retain compatibility with accessories such as the Transfer Pak and Pokémon Stadium’s Game Boy Tower. Memories are an added convenience; they do not replace cartridge saves, Controller Pak data or virtual Pak data.
Quit a game through the in-game Quit Cartridge command before removing a cartridge or SD card. Do not pull the SD card while powered on, and do not assume every change is preserved if the console is switched off while a game is running.

Download details and current release information are on Analogue’s firmware page. Updating before troubleshooting is particularly sensible for HDMI switches, AV receivers, eARC, CEC and controller issues.
First setup and safe updating
- Put the console in an open, ventilated position.
- Connect the supplied power supply, USB-C cable and HDMI cable.
- Connect an original, USB or supported wireless controller; player one is needed for some startup actions.
- Insert the supplied SD card if it has been removed.
- Enable Game Mode on the television when ALLM is unavailable.
- Update 3D OS before judging compatibility or feature support.
- With the console off, insert an original cartridge.
- Choose region, resolution and display mode, then test the game’s normal save method.
Installing a firmware update
- Fully power off the console.
- Remove the SD card, or expose it through USB-C SD connection mode.
- Delete older update files from the card’s root and copy the new firmware file there.
- Reinsert the card or disconnect the USB-C connection.
- Power on and wait for the yellow power LED and blinking controller LEDs.
- Do not interrupt the process; Analogue says installation takes approximately three to six minutes and then restarts automatically.
Who should buy Analogue 3D?
It is a strong fit if you
- Already own original N64 cartridges.
- Want a clean HDMI connection and modern display options.
- Still prefer the original three-pronged controller and four-player setup.
- Want a simple appliance rather than a computer-like configuration.
- Value FPGA recreation, Memories, HDR controls and screenshots.
Look elsewhere if you
- Need games or a controller included.
- Want to play on a real CRT.
- Want several retro systems from one box.
- Prefer the cheapest possible route or already have reliable software emulation.
- Expect every unofficial flash cartridge to work.
- Want modern remasters, widescreen enhancements or Nintendo’s curated subscription library.
How the alternatives compare
| Option | Best for | Main compromise |
|---|---|---|
| Original N64 plus scaler | Maximum original-hardware feel and CRT use. | Aging hardware, analog-video problems and possible scaler expense. See RetroTINK as a starting point. |
| MiSTer FPGA | Enthusiasts wanting many systems and extensive customization. | More setup; N64 peripherals and cartridge behavior depend on the core and hardware. |
| Software emulation | Low cost, save states, shaders and flexible resolution. | Results vary by emulator, game and settings, and it lacks the physical-cartridge experience. |
| Nintendo Switch Online | Casual players wanting an official digital service. | Subscription, changing regional catalog and no use for your own cartridges. |
| ModRetro M64 | Shoppers comparing newer cartridge-compatible FPGA hardware. | Launch status, final pricing, shipping and firmware maturity require current verification. Contemporary reporting discussed an early-bird $199 price and bundled controller; those are not permanent retail terms. See Tom’s Hardware. |
Verdict
Analogue 3D is best understood as a premium preservation and convenience product: original cartridges and controller ports, FPGA-based recreation, modern HDMI output and a steadily improved operating system. It is not the cheapest, broadest or most official route to N64 games. If your childhood cartridges are still on the shelf and your current television has no patience for composite video, the $269.99 console can make that collection feel immediate again—provided you budget separately for a controller and the games you do not already own.
