PS5 personalized 3D audio profiles are not an upcoming feature. Sony announced beta testing on July 24, 2024, then released the feature globally in the September 12, 2024 system update. If you use headphones or earbuds, you can create a per-user profile now.
What the personalized profile does
The PS5 plays test sounds from different apparent positions and asks you where each sound seems to originate. It uses your answers to create a personalized 3D-audio profile based on characteristics of how you hear spatial sound. Sony describes this as a software listening calibration, not a clinical hearing test, room scan, or complete headset equalizer.
The profile is saved on the PS5 for each user account. It is not described as being stored in the headset or automatically transferred to another PS5.
Sony’s Tempest 3D AudioTech is intended to reproduce spatial soundscapes in supported PS5 games. A profile can make directional cues easier for a particular listener to interpret, but it cannot add positional information that a game’s audio mix does not contain. Whether it sounds better remains subjective and can vary by game, headset and listener.

- TRIFORCE TITANIUM 50 MM DRIVERS — Our cutting-edge proprietary design divides the driver into 3 parts for the individual tuning of highs, mids, and lows—producing brighter, clearer audio with richer highs and more powerful lows
- HYPERCLEAR CARDIOID MIC — An improved pickup pattern ensures more voice and less noise as it tapers off towards the mic’s back and sides, with the sweet spot easily placed at the mouth because of the mic’s bendable design
- ADVANCED PASSIVE NOISE CANCELLATION — Sturdy closed earcups fully cover the ears to prevent noise from leaking into the headset, with its cushions providing a closer seal for more sound isolation
- LIGHTWEIGHT DESIGN WITH MEMORY FOAM EAR CUSHIONS — At just 240 g, the headset features thicker headband padding and memory foam ear cushions with leatherette to keep gaming in peak form during grueling tournaments and training sessions
- VOLUME WHEEL — Its on-headset control makes it convenient to adjust audio levels without having to fiddle with any system or program settings
Sony’s September 12, 2024 announcement says the feature rolled out across PS5 models; adaptive controller charging was the exception among the update features listed there.
How to create and enable a profile
- From the PS5 home screen, open Settings.
- Select Sound.
- Select 3D Audio (Headphones).
- Choose Create Personalized 3D Audio Profile.
- Follow the on-screen listening test. You will hear sounds from different directions and answer questions about where they appear to come from.
- When the test is complete, turn on Apply Personalized 3D Audio Profile.
These labels come from PlayStation’s support guide. If you prefer the standard processing, switch the personalized setting off and use one of Sony’s five preset 3D-audio profiles instead.

What equipment is required?
You need a PS5 with current system software and headphones or earbuds connected as the console’s game-audio output. Sony does not identify a particular PULSE headset as mandatory. Its earlier Tempest 3D AudioTech guidance describes compatible stereo headphones connected by USB, a USB wireless adapter or the DualSense controller’s 3.5-mm headset jack.
That does not guarantee that every Bluetooth, wireless, HDMI, television, soundbar or AV-receiver arrangement will expose the personalized-headphone option. The important check is whether the PS5 recognizes the connected device as its headphone output.

Headphone personalization is different from TV-speaker 3D audio
| Mode | What is measured | Where to configure it |
|---|---|---|
| Personalized headphone 3D audio | Your responses to directional listening tests through headphones or earbuds | Settings > Sound > 3D Audio (Headphones) |
| 3D audio for TV speakers | Room acoustics measured with the DualSense controller’s built-in microphone from your seating position | The separate 3D Audio (TV) setup |
The TV-speaker process is room correction, not a personalized hearing profile. Repeat that measurement if you move the television, change your seating position or substantially alter the room. Compatible Dolby Atmos equipment is a separate output capability and should not be confused with the headphone calibration.
Should you use the personalized profile?
It is worth trying when
- You regularly play with headphones or earbuds.
- Footsteps, distant enemies, projectiles or vertical positioning matter to you.
- Front-versus-back or above-versus-below cues are difficult to judge with the default profile.
- Several people use one PS5 and each person has a separate user account.
A preset or stereo may be preferable when
- You want an instant setup without a listening test.
- Your answers during the test are inconsistent.
- You change headsets often and do not want to compare calibrations.
- A particular game sounds unnatural with the personalized profile.
Compare personalized audio on, personalized audio off, each of the five presets and stereo output where appropriate. Sony provides the off switch, so calibration is optional rather than a requirement for using Tempest 3D AudioTech. No official source establishes a universal competitive advantage, lower latency or guaranteed accuracy improvement.

- Mappable Wheel and Mode Button for Customizable Functions
- QuickSwitch Button for Seamless Wireless to Bluetooth switching
- Flip-to-Mute Mic with A.I.-Based Noise Reduction
- Multiplatform, Low-latency 2.4GHz Wireless plus Bluetooth 5.2
Troubleshooting
The personalized option is missing
- Install the latest PS5 system software through Settings > System > System Software > System Software Update and Settings.
- Reconnect the headset or earbuds and confirm that the PS5 has selected them for audio output.
- Make sure you are in 3D Audio (Headphones), not 3D Audio (TV).
- Try a supported USB connection, USB wireless adapter or the DualSense 3.5-mm jack if your current output path is not recognized as headphones.
The result sounds worse
Turn Apply Personalized 3D Audio Profile off, try the five presets and compare stereo where suitable. The profile is intended to match your hearing characteristics, but Sony does not promise that every listener or headset will prefer it.
The test seems inaccurate
Wear the headset normally with left and right channels correctly oriented. Run the test in a quiet place at a comfortable volume, answer for perceived direction rather than loudness, and repeat it if the result sounds obviously wrong. These are practical ways to improve consistency, not stated Sony prerequisites.

What this feature does not do
- It is not a medical hearing assessment.
- It does not measure your room when you use headphones.
- It is not a comprehensive custom EQ saved to the headset.
- It does not automatically follow you to another PS5.
- It does not guarantee better sound in every game.
Try it with your existing headphones before buying new hardware. The feature requires no subscription or separate calibration service, and Sony has not made a special headset a condition of access.
