It is now an on-demand archive, not an upcoming broadcast. Watch it through the official PlayStation announcement.
Watch the PS5 Pro technical presentation
Sony scheduled the presentation for 8:00 a.m. PT / 11:00 a.m. ET / 4:00 p.m. BST on September 10, 2024. Mark Cerny, the PlayStation 5 lead architect, presents a technical explanation of PS5 Pro rather than a State of Play-style game showcase. The original runtime is nine minutes.

What Cerny’s presentation explains
The central problem is familiar to PS5 players: a high-quality 30fps mode can look substantially better than a 60fps performance mode, forcing a choice between image quality and responsiveness. PS5 Pro is designed to narrow that gap by combining three upgrades.

#1 Best Overall
- Ray Tracing - Immerse yourself in worlds with a new level of realism as rays of light are individually simulated, creating true-to-life shadows and reflections in supported PS5 games.
- Faster Loading - Fast-travel across the map and get back into the game almost instantly with the PlayStation 5 console’s ultra-high-speed SSD and fast load times.
- Stunning Visuals - Experience the vast world in stunning 4K and HDR at 120 FPS (with a 4K and HDR compatible TV or display)
- Breathtaking Immersion - Discover a deeper gaming experience with support for haptic feedback, adaptive triggers, and 3D Audio technology.
- Backwards Compatibility - Play over 4,000 PS4 games on PS5. Enjoy faster and smoother frame rates in some of the PS4 console's greatest games.
A larger GPU
Sony says PS5 Pro has 67% more Compute Units than the then-current PS5 and memory that is 28% faster. Together, Sony claims, the system can deliver up to 45% faster rendering in gameplay. These are Sony’s announced figures, not universal independent benchmark results; actual gains depend on the game and its settings.
More advanced ray tracing
Sony describes ray-tracing performance at double, and sometimes triple, the speed of the current PS5. In supported games, that extra capacity can improve reflections, shadows, ambient occlusion and other light interactions, or make effects practical in a higher-frame-rate mode. Developers still decide whether and how to use it.
PSSR upscaling
PSSR means PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution. Sony describes it as machine-learning-based image reconstruction: the game renders internally at a lower resolution, then PSSR reconstructs a sharper output image. That can help a developer pursue higher frame rates without discarding as much detail, but it is not a universal native-4K setting. Results vary with the game’s patch, rendering pipeline, selected mode and display.
How those technologies appear in games
The three upgrades are intended to work together. A game might use the larger GPU and faster ray tracing for richer lighting while using PSSR to reconstruct the final image at a higher apparent resolution. Other games may prioritize resolution, steadier performance, a new 60fps mode or a high-frame-rate option instead.

For example, Naughty Dog described a 1440p-to-4K PSSR mode targeting 60fps in its The Last of Us titles. That is a title-specific implementation, not a promise that every PS5 Pro game renders from 1440p or reaches 4K at 60fps. Sony’s developer coverage documents additional approaches in official developer explanations.
PS5 Pro Enhanced, Game Boost and ordinary PS5 games
PS5 Pro Enhanced titles
“PS5 Pro Enhanced” is a title-specific label. It does not prescribe one resolution, frame rate or ray-tracing feature. A patch may add a single hybrid mode, improve an existing Fidelity or Performance mode, increase ray-tracing quality, or introduce PSSR and high-frame-rate support.
Sony’s initial announcement associated PS5 Pro improvements with Alan Wake 2, Assassin’s Creed Shadows, Demon’s Souls, Dragon’s Dogma 2, Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, Gran Turismo 7, Hogwarts Legacy, Horizon Forbidden West, Marvel’s Spider-Man 2, Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart, The Crew Motorfest, The First Descendant and The Last of Us Part II Remastered. The list and implementations can change as developers update their games.
PS5 Game Boost and PS4 software
Sony says Game Boost can apply to more than 8,500 backward-compatible PS4 games, potentially improving or stabilizing performance. Select PS4 games also support Enhanced Image Quality. Neither feature turns every older title into a PS5 Pro remaster, and Sony’s product page warns that a small number of PS4 games are not compatible with PS5 Pro.

Unpatched PS5 games
An unpatched PS5 game may receive limited automatic benefits, but there is no reason to expect a major visual transformation. Check the game’s own patch notes and graphics options before assuming PSSR, ray tracing or a new 60fps mode is available.

Is PS5 Pro worth considering?
It makes the strongest case for
- Owners of 4K or 120Hz displays who can see differences in resolution, ray tracing and frame-rate modes.
- Players who strongly prefer 60fps but do not want to give up as much visual quality.
- Enthusiasts willing to pay a premium for the best version of supported games.
- Buyers who value 2TB of included storage.
A standard PS5 is usually the better fit for
- Players using a 1080p television or a display without 4K, HDR, VRR or 120Hz capability.
- People satisfied with existing Fidelity and Performance modes.
- Players whose libraries are mostly unpatched or rarely supported by PS5 Pro enhancements.
- Disc-heavy buyers who do not want the added cost and setup of a separate drive.
“Up to 45% faster rendering” does not mean every game runs 45% faster, and PSSR or ray tracing will not look identical on every television. The standard PS5 remains the more economical choice when those premium, game-specific improvements are not priorities.
Do not confuse it with the later Technical Seminar
Sony published a separate PS5 Pro Technical Seminar on December 18, 2024. That longer follow-up goes deeper into FLOPS, TOPS, ray-tracing architecture, machine-learning hardware, PSSR development and Sony’s work with AMD. It is distinct from the nine-minute September presentation and is not a new game-announcement video.
