This was a historical restock, not a current alert. The original headline referred to Wednesday, March 22, 2017, when GameStop expected limited quantities of the newly launched Nintendo Switch at participating U.S. stores. The standard consoles were described as in-store purchases, sold first come, first served, while supplies lasted. Nothing in that report establishes GameStop inventory today.
What GameStop announced on March 22, 2017
The report, published at 8:39 a.m. EDT on March 22, 2017, said GameStop expected a partial replenishment of standard Nintendo Switch systems. The console had launched on March 3, and demand was outpacing immediately available supply in many markets. The announcement covered stores around the United States, but it did not say that every location would receive consoles or that allocations would be identical. BGR’s contemporary report is the source for those details.
How shoppers were expected to buy one
In-store, first come, first served
Customers generally had to visit a local GameStop, pay in full, and buy while that store’s supply lasted. There was no stated hold or reservation system for the standard consoles in the March 22 report.
No standard-console online order
The incoming retail boxes were described as unavailable through GameStop’s website. GameStop had offered online bundles separately, but a bundle listing was not evidence that a standalone console was available at a nearby store.

Why calling ahead helped but did not guarantee a unit
A sensible 2017 plan was to identify nearby stores, call before traveling, ask whether that location received the shipment, and confirm whether any systems remained. Employees might not have had a final count before opening, inventory systems could lag behind sales, and a store could sell out before a shopper arrived. A national announcement was therefore an indication to check locally, not a reservation.
What “back in stock” did—and did not—mean
- It meant some stores were expected to receive limited quantities.
- It did not guarantee a console for every shopper.
- It did not describe a nationwide online inventory drop.
- It did not promise that every store had stock at opening or throughout the day.
- It did not establish that the shortage was over.
The temporary trade-in promotion
GameStop also promoted an offer running March 20–26, 2017. These were historical store-credit terms, not current values or cash payments:
Rank #2
- 6.2” LCD screen
- Three play modes: TV, tabletop, and handheld
- Local co-op, online, and local wireless multiplayer
- Detachable Joy-Con controllers
- Nintendo Switch is the home of Mario & friends
| Trade-in item | Reported credit | Qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Nintendo 3DS or Wii U | $150 | Promotional in-store credit during March 20–26, 2017 |
| Xbox One | $175 | Promotional in-store credit during March 20–26, 2017 |
| PlayStation 4 | $200 | Promotional in-store credit during March 20–26, 2017 |
Actual eligibility could depend on condition, required accessories, and other store terms. The amounts should not be used to estimate a present-day trade-in offer.
Other ways buyers tried to find a Switch
Monitor other retailers
The March report suggested watching retailers such as Amazon. A GameStop shipment could signal that other retailers might receive inventory, but it was not proof of simultaneous availability. Large retailers could differ in timing, quantity, delivery options, and pickup rules.

Consider bundles carefully
An online bundle could provide another purchase path when a standalone system was unavailable, but it might cost more or include games and accessories the buyer did not want.
Understand the reseller trade-off
A reseller might offer immediate availability during the shortage, but buyers faced price premiums, seller risk, and less favorable value than purchasing at normal retail pricing. A March 17, 2017 report contrasted regular-price GameStop inventory with inflated Amazon and eBay listings: BGR’s earlier coverage.

What happened after the March shipment
| Date | Reported event | What it shows |
|---|---|---|
| March 3, 2017 | Nintendo Switch launch | Launch-period demand quickly exceeded available supply in many markets. |
| March 22, 2017 | Limited GameStop replenishment | Standard systems were expected at some U.S. stores for in-person, first-come sales. |
| April 26, 2017 | Another limited shipment, around the April 28 release of Mario Kart 8 Deluxe | The March event had not permanently solved availability; archived GameSpot-syndicated coverage again described limited store supply. |
| June 20, 2017 | Further limited quantities reported at GameStop stores nationwide | Availability still depended on individual stores and first-come, first-served sales; GamingBolt’s report advised checking local locations. |
How to read this headline today
“Today” means March 22, 2017 in the archived article, not the current date. The report cannot establish present Nintendo Switch or Nintendo Switch 2 stock, pricing, trade-in values, or GameStop online availability. Anyone republishing it should label it as historical and avoid placing current shopping links beneath an undated restock headline.
For a current buying check
Use live listings rather than this archive: GameStop’s hardware page is gamestop.com/consoles-hardware, Nintendo’s official store is nintendo.com/us/store, and Nintendo’s systems information is at nintendo.com/us/gaming-systems.
