Yes—but only during a completed promotion. Star Wars Battlefront II: Celebration Edition was free to claim on the Epic Games Store from January 14 through January 21, 2021. Anyone who completed the claim kept the PC game in their Epic library. The offer is no longer active: Epic’s listing showed a $39.99 price on August 18, 2026.
Historical promotion: The Epic giveaway ran from January 14 to January 21, 2021. It is not an August 2026 free-game offer.

What the Epic giveaway actually offered
The promotion covered the PC version of STAR WARS™ Battlefront™ II: Celebration Edition, rather than a temporary trial or a free-to-play conversion. The final reported cutoff was January 21, 2021, at 8 a.m. Pacific / 11 a.m. Eastern. Contemporary listings from PC Gamer, GameSpot and Neowin recorded the offer.

You did not have to download or install it before the deadline; completing the zero-dollar checkout was the important step. The claim did not create a PlayStation or Xbox license.

What was included in Celebration Edition?
Epic describes the package as the full game with its single-player campaign, multiplayer modes and co-op features, plus the Celebration Edition’s included customization content. That content covers material inspired by Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker.
“Complete collection of customization content” has a defined meaning here. Epic’s listing says content released after December 20, 2019, is not included. It does not promise every later update, every future cosmetic item or a separate remaster. See the current product description at Epic Games Store.

How claiming worked
- Sign in to an Epic Games account or create one.
- Open the Star Wars Battlefront II: Celebration Edition product page while the promotion is active.
- Select the free claim or purchase option and proceed to checkout.
- Confirm that the order total is $0 before submitting it.
- Check that the title appears in the Epic Games Launcher library.
- Install it from the launcher when ready.
- At launch, sign in to or create an EA account and complete the requested linking.
The claim had to be completed before the deadline, but installation could happen later. If the game never appeared in the library, the usual first checks were the Epic account used at checkout and the order history, rather than attempting to claim an expired offer.
Accounts, software and other requirements
Epic’s product information lists these practical requirements:
Rank #3
- The reboot of the Battlefront series returns with a new character class system and a single-player campaign in Star Wars: Battlefront II. Solo gamers join the Galactic Empire as Iden Versio, commander of an Imperial special forces unit known as Inferno Squad.
- Beginning after the explosion of Death Star II, players embark on a 30-year campaign in which they interact with iconic Star Wars characters and fight to suppress the rebellion in battles on land and in space, while multiplayer fans pick from four classes, head to iconic locations, and compete in a variety of modes.
- Gamers choose from Assault, Heavy, Specialist, or Support classes and then switch between first-person and third-person perspectives as they fight across worlds like Endor, Jakku, Naboo, and Yavine 4, either on foot, or aboard vehicles like speeder bikes, snowspeeders, and AT-ATs.
- Multiplayer modes include the objective-based scenarios of Strike, Galactic Assault, and Starfighter Assault, the close-quarters combat of Blast, and four-on-four battles in Heroes vs. Villains mode.
- This Game is a Region Free PAL Game Imported from the UK. Works on all PS4 consoles You may need to create a free European PSN (Playstation Network) account for DLCs and extra contents and for online play.
- An Epic Games account.
- An EA account.
- An internet connection.
- Acceptance of EA’s user agreement and related software terms.
- Linking the Epic and EA accounts.
- The EA app or other required EA software for the PC installation.
Epic warns that access is limited to one EA account and one Epic account and is non-transferable after purchase. That means an Epic login can launch the game but still prompt for EA authentication, and linking the wrong EA account can prevent access to the intended library. “Free” covered the game license only; it did not cover internet service, hardware, storage, bandwidth charges or optional subscriptions.
Was it free forever?
For someone who claimed during January 14–21, 2021, the game remained in the Epic library rather than expiring after a week. Someone who missed the cutoff could no longer obtain it free through that specific promotion. Later downloads remain subject to account status, platform availability and the services needed to run the game.

- Join your squadron and weave in between asteroids fields, fly through Imperial Dock Yards and take down massive capital ships as you pilot legendary starfighters in high stakes dogfights with up to 24 players and 40 AI ships.
- Team up with a friend from the comfort of your couch with two-player offline split-screen play. Earn rewards, customise your troopers and heroes, and bring your upgrades with you on the online multiplayer battleground.
- Master your craft with customisable character progression. Upgrade abilities unique to each hero, trooper class, and starfighter.
This was therefore a free-to-keep claim, not “free-to-play.” The distinction matters: Epic’s current storefront treats the title as a paid product.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Is Battlefront II still free on Epic?
No. As of August 18, 2026, Epic’s product page displayed Battlefront II: Celebration Edition at $39.99. The same page advertised EA Play access starting at $5.99 per month; that is a dated storefront signal, not a guaranteed universal August 2026 subscription price. Check the live listing before buying at Epic Games Store.

Buying the game outright suits someone who wants continued access in the Epic ecosystem and missed the giveaway. EA Play may suit someone seeking a broader EA catalog, but subscription access is not permanent ownership after cancellation. Do not buy or share a claimed account: the store’s one-EA-account/one-Epic-account restriction makes that arrangement non-transferable.
Why the giveaway became such a big event
EA later said more than 19 million players obtained Battlefront II through the Epic promotion, according to GameSpot’s report. The sudden influx produced temporary server and matchmaking pressure. That figure explains the launch-day congestion, but it is not evidence of the game’s current server condition.
Contemporary coverage also noted that the game was no longer receiving major content additions at the time of the giveaway. That historical content-update status should not be confused with a current shutdown announcement: access to online modes depends on EA’s services and account systems. Epic’s listing says EA may retire online features with 30 days’ notice posted on its service-updates page; no shutdown date is established here.
Quick Recap
What the old headline gets wrong today
- “Free this week” describes January 14–21, 2021, not the current storefront.
- “Battlefront 2” omits that the giveaway edition was specifically Celebration Edition.
- The offer was a permanent library claim for people who acted in time, not a seven-day play trial.
- An Epic account alone was insufficient; EA account linking and EA software were also part of the PC setup.
- The promotion applied to Epic’s PC version and did not transfer to consoles.
