If moving your mouse, stick, or finger up makes your Roblox view look down, the vertical camera axis is inverted. In an experience using Roblox’s standard camera, open the Roblox menu, choose Settings, and look for Camera Inverted or a similarly named option; switch it off for conventional controls. If the option is missing or changing it has no effect, the experience may use a custom or locked camera. Menu labels and availability vary by platform and experience. (Roblox Support; Roblox Developer Forum)
Turn off the inverted camera setting
- Join the Roblox experience where the camera feels reversed.
- Open the Roblox menu by selecting the Roblox icon, or press Esc on a keyboard.
- Select Settings.
- Look for Camera Inverted or a similarly named camera option. Its position and availability can vary.
- Turn the option off for conventional vertical controls, or on if you prefer inverted controls.
- Close the menu and test the camera, then repeat the test in another experience if the behavior persists.
The setting concerns camera movement on the vertical, or Y, axis. Roblox’s historical explanation describes it for gamepad, mouse, and touch input, but an experience’s custom camera may not show or follow the preference. (Roblox Developer Forum)
What “inverted camera” means
- Normal vertical movement: Move the control up and the view looks up; move it down and the view looks down.
- Inverted vertical movement: Move up and the view looks down; move down and the view looks up.
- Horizontal reversal: Left and right are swapped. This is a separate X-axis issue, not what Roblox’s documented camera Y-inversion preference addresses.
- An upside-down or rotated view: The camera itself is oriented differently. That is not ordinary Y-axis inversion and may involve a scripted camera or a special gameplay state.
Inverted controls are a preference, not inherently a defect. They are a problem when they are unexpected, inconsistent, or remain reversed despite the preference being off.
Why the option may not fix it
The preference was changed
If the same up/down reversal appears in several unrelated experiences, first recheck the setting in the in-experience menu. A changed preference is the simplest explanation when behavior is consistent across games.

The experience controls its own camera
Developers can restrict camera behavior or use a custom camera controller. As a result, an experience may hide the inversion option, display it without applying it, or implement inversion only for particular input types or camera modes. Roblox’s support documentation also notes that players can switch between Classic and Follow only when the developer has not locked the camera mode. (Roblox Support; Roblox Developer Forum)
A camera mode feels different but does not necessarily invert the axis
Classic maintains a fixed relationship between the camera and avatar until the player adjusts it; Follow rotates the camera as the avatar moves laterally. Shift Lock changes camera behavior when available. On supported desktop setups, right mouse button can be used to enter camera-look behavior. These modes affect how the camera follows or rotates; they are not synonyms for Y-axis inversion. CameraToggle likewise changes how free camera rotation is engaged, not whether up/down is reversed. An input device or temporary client issue is involved
If the preference appears off, the cause may be limited to a controller configuration, mouse or touch input, a mode-specific custom camera, or a temporary client issue. Compare devices and experiences before changing system settings or reinstalling Roblox.
Use a quick test to locate the cause
- Test the affected experience in its usual camera view.
- Join a second, unrelated experience and test the same input.
- On desktop, compare right-mouse camera rotation in third person with first person.
- If available, test with Shift Lock off and on; treat this as a comparison, not an assumed fix.
- Try another input device, such as a controller instead of a mouse, or touch instead of a controller where applicable.
| What you observe | Most useful next check |
|---|---|
| Reversal in several experiences and on several devices | Recheck the in-experience preference, leave and rejoin, then restart the Roblox client. |
| Reversal in one experience only | Look for that experience’s own control settings or contact its developer; a custom camera may not honor Roblox’s preference. |
| Reversal on one device only | Check that device’s controller configuration, input mapping, or driver settings. |
| Reversal only in first person or Shift Lock | Compare camera modes and report the mode-specific behavior to the experience developer. |
| Camera Inverted option is absent | The experience may restrict the camera or use a custom controller. |
| View is rotated or upside down, not simply reversed | Check whether a vehicle, tool, cutscene, or gameplay camera is active; report a persistent issue as a camera-orientation problem. |
What to do in specific cases
Only one Roblox experience is affected
Roblox’s global preference may not control that experience’s camera. Check its own controls or help page, and report the issue to its developer with the experience name and the camera mode where it occurs.

Only a controller is affected
Check the controller’s platform-level configuration and the experience’s control settings. A custom gamepad camera may handle input separately, so changing a mouse-oriented preference may not change it.
Only first person or Shift Lock is affected
Compare with third person and with Shift Lock toggled, if the experience permits it. If only one mode reverses the axis, describe that exact mode in your report; the difference can point to separate camera behavior.

The camera is upside down or stuck
First exit any vehicle, tool, cutscene, or special camera state and rejoin the experience. If the view remains physically rotated, report it as an orientation or camera-state problem rather than a Y-axis preference issue.

Developer note: supporting the player’s preference
Roblox exposes the camera Y-inversion preference through UserGameSettings. A developer can make the option visible with SetCameraYInvertVisible() and read its value with GetCameraYInvertValue():
local UserGameSettings = UserSettings():GetService("UserGameSettings")
UserGameSettings:SetCameraYInvertVisible()
local invertValue = UserGameSettings:GetCameraYInvertValue()
The historical Roblox explanation describes 1 as no inversion and -1 as inversion. A custom camera must deliberately read and apply that value; exposing the preference alone does not make every custom controller honor it. Consult Roblox’s UserGameSettings reference and camera documentation when implementing camera behavior.
