A Razer keyboard that “stops working” may have lost USB or wireless power, be blocked by Synapse settings, need a model-specific firmware reset, or have a failed key switch or circuit. Start by separating a whole-keyboard failure from a few unresponsive keys, then test a direct connection, Synapse-independent typing, another computer, and only afterward reset or update firmware.
Start with a 60-second triage
- Disconnect the keyboard and reconnect it directly to the computer.
- Try another USB port and, if detachable, another known-good cable. Avoid hubs, docking stations, KVM switches, extenders and monitor USB ports; on a desktop, try a rear motherboard port.
- If the keyboard has two USB plugs, connect both directly. Razer notes that some models require USB 3.0, so check your model’s specifications.
- Restart Windows, then test typing at the sign-in screen or in BIOS/UEFI if possible.
- Close Razer Synapse and test ordinary typing before changing profiles or drivers.
- Test the keyboard on another computer. This result usually tells you whether to troubleshoot the computer or the keyboard.
Razer’s general guidance covers direct connection, updates, cleaning, demo mode and Synapse testing: Razer keyboard troubleshooting.
Identify what actually failed
| Symptom | Most useful interpretation | First checks |
|---|---|---|
| No lights, no typing and no Windows detection | Power, cable, port, firmware or hardware fault | Direct connection, another cable/port and another computer |
| Lights work but no keys register | Synapse profile, keyboard mode, firmware, Windows configuration or input hardware | Sign-in/BIOS test, Synapse-disabled test and profile reset |
| One or several keys fail | Debris, keycap obstruction, switch, socket or liquid damage | Clean safely and test the same key in several apps and computers |
| Keys repeat or spam | Debris, failing switch, Rapid Trigger/actuation setting, firmware or software | Disable Synapse, inspect settings and clean the affected area |
| Wired works but wireless does not | Battery, pairing, receiver, Bluetooth, interference or wireless firmware | Charge, select the correct mode and re-pair |
| Windows works but Synapse does not detect it | Synapse, model support, firmware or profile issue; not necessarily a dead keyboard | Update or clean-reinstall Synapse and verify model compatibility |
Check power, cables and Windows detection
Use a clean wired connection
Reconnect the cable firmly at both ends. A hub can provide enough power for lights but still cause unreliable data, so connect directly. If two connectors are fitted, both may be required. For a wireless keyboard, charge it and switch to wired mode before diagnosing wireless operation.
Check Windows separately from Synapse
Listen for the USB connection sound and open Settings → Bluetooth & devices → Devices for Bluetooth models. In Device Manager, inspect Keyboards, Human Interface Devices and Universal Serial Bus controllers. If an entry has an error, reconnect directly and restart Windows before making changes. Record the device name rather than uninstalling random HID or USB entries. Basic typing can work even when Synapse cannot see the keyboard.

Use the sign-in or BIOS test
If the keyboard works before Windows loads but fails inside Windows or applications, the physical board is less likely to be completely dead. Focus on Synapse, remapping, drivers, profiles or security policies.
Separate Synapse problems from keyboard problems
Close Synapse completely, stop it from relaunching temporarily if necessary, and test typing. If the keyboard works normally, inspect the active profile for macros, disabled keys, remaps, Hypershift layers and Gaming Mode settings. Repair or clean-reinstall Synapse, reboot, then recreate or switch profiles.

Synapse is primarily for profiles, lighting, macros and advanced features; it is not universally required for basic HID typing. Compatibility varies by model and software generation. Check the exact device against Razer’s Synapse Web supported-device list and the Razer Support home page. Do not install third-party driver-updater utilities.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsUpdate Windows, Synapse and model-specific firmware
Firmware
Find the exact model and revision printed on the keyboard or its label before downloading an updater. Use only that model’s support page, keep it directly connected, and do not unplug it or interrupt power while firmware is being written. Restart afterward if instructed. Razer’s indexed updater page, for example, lists version v1.02.00_r1 for RZ03-0553; that number is not a universal update: firmware support.
Synapse and Windows
Install pending Windows updates and update Synapse through its own updater. If Synapse updating fails, use its repair or clean-reinstallation process rather than repeatedly layering installations. A firmware update may resolve compatibility or detection faults, but it cannot repair liquid damage, a broken switch or a damaged circuit.

Exit demo mode or perform a model-specific reset
Demo and onboard modes
Razer lists demo mode as a possible cause of an apparently unresponsive keyboard. Exit it only with the shortcut documented for your exact model; a Huntsman shortcut should not be assumed to work on every BlackWidow, Ornata, wireless or older keyboard. Use the model’s manual or support page when the shortcut is unknown.
Hard reset for listed models
If your model appears on Razer’s supported hard-reset list, use this documented sequence:
- Disconnect the keyboard.
- Hold Left Ctrl + Esc.
- While holding both keys, reconnect the USB cable.
- Continue holding for about five seconds, then release.
- Wait for the keyboard to restart and its default lighting to return.
- Open Synapse and restore profiles and lighting.
This sequence is not universal. Razer warns that it can clear onboard profiles and lighting configurations: supported hard-reset instructions and general reset guidance. Export or photograph important settings first when possible.

Fix individual unresponsive or repeating keys
Clean without adding damage
Shut down or disconnect the keyboard. Use short bursts of compressed air and a clean microfiber cloth; never spray liquid directly into the case. Remove a keycap only when its mechanism and your model’s instructions make removal safe. Test the key in a text editor and another keyboard-testing utility after cleaning.
Liquid spills can cause intermittent faults long after the incident. If there is visible corrosion, unusual heat, a burnt smell or swelling, stop powering the keyboard.
Decide whether a switch is replaceable
If the same key fails across applications and computers after cleaning and Synapse testing, the switch, socket or board is more likely at fault. Replace a switch only on a confirmed hot-swappable model, and verify mechanical and electrical compatibility. Do not open a non-hot-swappable board without appropriate repair skills, especially during warranty coverage. Razer’s cleaning and switch guidance is at its keyboard troubleshooting page.

Troubleshoot wireless and Bluetooth models
- Charge the keyboard fully and verify that wired mode works.
- Select the correct wireless mode on the keyboard.
- For Bluetooth, remove the keyboard in Windows Bluetooth settings and pair it again.
- For HyperSpeed, reconnect the receiver using the model’s documented pairing utility; do not assume every Razer receiver is interchangeable.
- Try another USB port for the receiver and move it closer to the keyboard, away from likely USB 3.x interference.
- Update firmware and pairing utilities from the exact model page, then test away from other wireless peripherals.
Pairing tools and receiver instructions differ by model; the BlackWidow V3 Pro support page illustrates this: Razer wireless support.
Test on another computer and interpret the result
- Fails identically everywhere: suspect the keyboard, cable, receiver or firmware.
- Works on another computer: investigate the original computer’s USB ports, Bluetooth stack, Windows configuration, Synapse, security software or device policies.
- Works only wired on both computers: wireless hardware, pairing or receiver operation is implicated.
- Only one key fails everywhere: hardware is more likely than Windows.
When to stop troubleshooting
Contact Razer or the retailer when the keyboard is undetected on multiple computers, direct connections and another cable make no difference, firmware updating fails, or a key remains dead after cleaning and cross-computer testing. Escalate immediately for liquid damage, a burnt smell, visible damage, swelling or unusual heat. Avoid soldering, opening the case or bypassing safety procedures while warranty coverage may apply.
Razer’s indexed policy generally lists a two-year limited warranty for keyboards and keypads, while the Huntsman Signature Edition is listed separately with five years. Model, region, purchase channel, refurbished or discontinued status and local law can change coverage; proof of purchase may be required. Verify current terms at Razer warranty support and Razer’s warranty documentation.
Quick Recap
Repair or replace?
- Clean or reset: lowest risk and cost; unlikely to cure board or liquid damage.
- Synapse reinstall: appropriate when typing returns with Synapse disabled, not when the keyboard has no power anywhere.
- Firmware update: useful for supported firmware or compatibility faults, but model matching and uninterrupted power are essential.
- Switch replacement: economical for one failed switch on a hot-swappable board.
- Warranty claim: usually preferable to self-repair while covered.
- Replacement keyboard: reasonable when damage is extensive, support has ended, or repair approaches the cost of a new board.
