Work through the checks in this order: test another device, move the Switch within about 10 feet (2–3 meters) of the router, restart the console and network equipment, reconnect the saved Wi‑Fi profile, and run Test Connection. The result tells you whether the fault is the Switch, wireless signal, router, internet service, DNS, or a restricted network.

Do these quick fixes first

  1. Confirm that a phone or laptop can connect to the same Wi‑Fi and browse the web. If no device works, troubleshoot the modem, router, account, or ISP first.
  2. Move the Switch close to the router—Nintendo recommends approximately 10 feet (2–3 meters) while troubleshooting. Remove nearby metal objects and electronic interference. If the console is docked, remove it temporarily.
  3. Open HOME → System Settings → Internet → Internet Settings. Make sure Airplane Mode is off and select the correct network name (SSID).
  4. Re-enter the password carefully. Wi‑Fi passwords are case-sensitive.
  5. Restart the Switch. Then unplug the modem and router for at least 30 seconds. Reconnect the modem first, wait for its lights to stabilize, then reconnect the router.

Nintendo’s wireless guidance covers this sequence and signal placement: Nintendo’s 2110-3129 troubleshooting page.

Reconnect or recreate the saved Wi‑Fi connection

In Internet Settings, select the network and choose Change Settings. On the original Switch, the list may be called Registered Networks; Switch 2 may show Saved Networks. If the profile contains an old password or custom settings, delete or deregister it, scan again, select the SSID, and enter the current password.

Verify the SSID on the router label or router app so you do not select a similarly named neighbor network. Avoid disabling Wi‑Fi encryption; if the router uses enterprise authentication or an unusual security mode, use a standard supported home-network configuration or ask the network administrator.

Run Test Connection and read what failed

  1. Go to System Settings → Internet → Internet Settings.
  2. Select the saved network, then choose Test Connection.
  3. Record the error code, NAT type, connection status, and download/upload results.

A successful Wi‑Fi association only proves that the console joined the router. The test can still fail while obtaining an IP address, resolving DNS, reaching the internet, or contacting Nintendo services.

What you see Likely area
No device has internet access Modem, router, ISP, or account outage
Switch cannot see the SSID Distance, interference, hidden SSID, radio/band/channel, or router configuration
SSID appears but password is rejected Wrong password, stale profile, security mode, or restricted network
Switch joins Wi‑Fi but internet test fails DNS, proxy, MTU, captive portal, router, ISP, or service issue
Hotspot works but home Wi‑Fi does not Home router, ISP, DNS, security, or interference
Several known-working networks fail Console settings, software, wireless hardware, or service/account issue

If the Wi‑Fi network does not appear

Rescan close to the router

In Internet Settings, press Y to scan again when that option is shown. Confirm that the router’s Wi‑Fi radio is enabled and reboot it. Temporarily move the router and Switch away from metal cabinets, speakers, cordless-phone bases, power equipment, and microwave ovens.

Check hidden SSIDs and bands

If the network name is hidden, enable SSID broadcasting temporarily or use the manual setup option Connect to a Hidden Network. If the router exposes separate 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz names, test each. The bands differ in range and congestion, so do not assume one is universally best for every model or room. Mesh steering, guest networks, extenders, enterprise authentication, and unusual channels can also prevent discovery; test the main router network first.

If the password is rejected

  1. Confirm the password works on another device and that you selected the right SSID.
  2. Choose Change Settings, or remove and re-register the connection.
  3. Type the password again rather than relying on an outdated saved profile.
  4. Check the router for access control, MAC filtering, parental controls, device limits, or a guest-network sign-in requirement.

Hotel, school, work, and public networks may require a browser terms page, room number, device registration, or enterprise credentials that the Switch cannot complete automatically. Ask the administrator whether Nintendo Switch is supported instead of trying to bypass controls.

If Wi‑Fi connects but the internet test fails

Restore ordinary settings

Open the network’s Change Settings screen. For a normal home connection, set DNS Settings to Automatic, Proxy Settings to Off, and MTU to 1400. Nintendo recommends retaining MTU 1400 for most home networks and using a proxy only when the network administrator supplies the required server details. Do not randomly experiment with MTU values.

Use alternate DNS only as a test

Nintendo documents Google Public DNS as a diagnostic for some 2110-series errors:

  • Primary DNS: 8.8.8.8
  • Secondary DNS: 8.8.4.4

Path: System Settings → Internet → Internet Settings → network → Change Settings → DNS Settings → Manual. Select Primary DNS, hold B to clear the value, enter 8.8.8.8, then repeat for Secondary DNS with 8.8.4.4. Save and test. These are Google services, not Nintendo services. If this does not help, return DNS to Automatic unless your ISP or network administrator requires another value.

Check whether other devices can browse, look for an ISP outage, and verify the router account is active. For managed networks, the administrator may require a particular DNS service.

Router and modem checks

  • Install router firmware updates using the manufacturer’s instructions.
  • Check status lights and confirm the modem has synchronized.
  • Test the main router rather than a guest network or extender.
  • Look for device limits, access control, parental controls, MAC filtering, bridge/access-point settings, and double NAT.
  • Back up router settings before considering a factory reset; a reset erases wireless names, passwords, and ISP configuration.

Nintendo directs owners to the router manufacturer for firmware and reset procedures when console-side steps fail: 2110-3000 through 2110-3999 guidance.

When only online multiplayer fails: check NAT

If web access and downloads work but a game cannot host or join matches, the Wi‑Fi itself may be fine. Record the NAT type from Test Connection. Stricter NAT can limit some multiplayer activities, and the other player’s NAT type or the game’s servers can matter too.

  1. Reboot the modem and router.
  2. Check whether two routers are operating in series; use bridge or access-point mode where appropriate.
  3. Ask the ISP whether carrier-grade NAT is used.
  4. Only then consider router-specific port forwarding, with security precautions.

See Nintendo’s NAT explanation: NAT troubleshooting. Hotel Wi‑Fi, mobile hotspots, and institutional networks may not provide an ideal NAT type at all.

Try a phone hotspot

Connect the Switch to a phone hotspot briefly as an isolation test. If it works, the Switch’s radio is probably functioning and the home router, ISP, DNS, security, or interference is the leading suspect. If it also fails, console settings, system software, or hardware become more likely.

Hotspot results depend on the phone, carrier, plan, signal, and security settings. Mobile data can be consumed quickly, latency may be high, and carrier NAT can restrict multiplayer, so treat it as a test or temporary connection rather than a guaranteed permanent solution.

Try a wired connection

A wired test separates wireless problems from broader internet problems. An original Switch dock without a built-in LAN port needs a compatible USB LAN adapter. The OLED dock has a built-in LAN port. Switch Lite requires additional compatible equipment and is not a straightforward docked Ethernet setup.

Switch 2’s dock has a LAN port. Nintendo recommends configuring wireless as well if the console will be used outside the dock: Switch 2 wired setup.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If wired networking works while Wi‑Fi does not, focus on radio conditions, router wireless settings, or the console’s wireless hardware. If wired and hotspot tests both fail, investigate the console or the wider internet connection.

Useful error-code groups

Code or range What it generally indicates Reference
2110-3000 through 2110-3999 Broad wired or wireless connection failures Nintendo support
2110-3129 Potential DNS or network-environment problem Nintendo support
2110-3150 Wireless troubleshooting involving DNS, proxy, MTU, signal, and router settings Nintendo support
2110-4116 Wireless drop or timeout symptoms Nintendo support

When to contact Nintendo

  • The Switch cannot connect to multiple known-working networks.
  • The scan finds no networks anywhere, even beside the router.
  • Wi‑Fi repeatedly drops at close range after settings are restored.
  • Hotspot and wired tests both fail.
  • The problem began after liquid damage, impact, overheating, or a repair.

Do not open the console or replace its wireless module yourself; contact Nintendo or a qualified repair provider, especially if warranty coverage may apply. Also check Nintendo’s official service-status channels before assuming a router is defective. A service outage can affect sign-in, eShop, downloads, or multiplayer while local Wi‑Fi still works.
